The urge to walk right over to Ethan and strike up a conversation was almost overwhelming. But common sense, or perhaps a healthy dose of fear, held her back. Instead, she opted for a more subtle approach.

"Hey, Clara," she said, feigning nonchalance, "did you hear about the basketball team's open match this afternoon?"

Clara looked up, eyebrows raised. "The basketball team? Not really my scene, but why do you ask?"

Isabella shrugged, trying to appear casual. "Oh, no reason. Just wondering."

Clara wasn't convinced. A knowing smile played on her lips. "Uh-huh. 'No reason' sounds suspiciously like a reason. Spill it, Isabella. Are you thinking about checking out Mr. Miller's skills on the court?"

Isabella felt a blush creep up her cheeks, betraying her intentions. "Maybe," she mumbled, trying to sound indifferent.

Clara clapped her hands together, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Well, well, well. Looks like someone's finally decided to take a chance! You know, I might just need to tag along for some moral support... and maybe a little people-watching myself."

A laugh escaped Isabella's lips. Despite her initial nervousness, the prospect of spending the afternoon with Clara, even if it meant watching Ethan play, was surprisingly appealing. "Fine," she conceded, a playful smile on her face. "You can come. But be warned, my knowledge of basketball extends to the fact that there's a hoop and a ball."

Clara snorted. "Don't worry, I'll be your resident basketball expert. Just promise me you'll actually talk to him after the game, no matter how badly he plays."

Isabella hesitated, a pang of doubt crossing her mind. Talking to Ethan seemed a world away from simply watching him play. "I... I'll try," she mumbled.

But as they packed up their lunch and headed towards the outdoor basketball court, a spark of determination flickered within her. Maybe, just maybe, this unexpected afternoon held the potential for something more than just witnessing Ethan's athletic prowess. Maybe, just maybe, it was a chance to break free from her silent longing.
