Part 13

You looked down at the sheet of paper that sat on the table in front of you. It was addressed to Bucky, but you knew that it would never get to him. It would never even get sent, but you knew that. You were writing it so as to seem inconspicuous. You were sitting in a small café in Berlin. Clara was sitting at another table with Nikolai. The two were supposed to appear as a married couple. Nikolai and Clara didn't mind that part, but none of you liked what was supposed to come after.

You glanced over at them and noticed Clara tapping her foot. She was using Morse code.

"No sight of him. Shouldn't be long." she tapped. You gave a small nod and looked back to your letter. All you had was the opening.

"My dearest James,

How are you my darling?"

You sighed and took another sip of your coffee. It had become cold, but you didn't want to draw attention to yourself and ask for a refill. So, you just drank your cold coffee in silence while you heard Clara whispering to Nikolai. As you looked back down at your letter, you heard the bell over the café's door ring. You looked up and saw a tall man in a trench coat enter the café. He walked over to the counter and ordered a coffee to go. He seemed to speak with an accent other than German. It took you a moment, but then you realized that he was Australian. He wore a fedora which hid his eyes, but he was obviously nervous about something. He kept glancing around, and when he looked in your direction, you just glanced down at your letter as though you had only been glancing off into the distance for a moment.

He got his order after a few minutes and paid for it. He then went over the only empty table in the café, which happened to be right next to you. He sat down and glanced out of the window. You noticed that he was shaking. When he tried to pick up his coffee, his hands were trembling so much, you were worried that he might accidentally knock the cup over and spill some on you. He kept looking straight ahead, not looking at you. You decided to take matters into your own hands. You knew that Bucky wouldn't like your tactics, but he wasn't there.

"Say, Sugar, what time is it?" you asked him. He jumped when he heard you speak. He nervously patted his coat, trying to find his phone, only to realize that he had left his phone back in his motel. He shrugged his shoulders and looked straight ahead again.

"Oh, that's too bad. Well, thanks anyway. What's your name, sweetheart?" you batted your eyelashes at him. Man, Bucky would be so jealous of he could only see you.

"O..Oscar Filipacchi, ma'am." He looked around him nervously before he looked ahead again. Alarms started to blare inside your head. Filipacchi was the man you were looking for.

Filipacchi had used to work for Hydra. After he realized what a corrupt group it was, he left after downloading millions of Hydra research and data files to a hard drive. He had been hiding for a year before Hydra officially found out his location. That's why the three of you were there. Yes, Filipacchi had already sold some of the files to high paying bidders, but the majority of the information was still on the hard drive, that you knew of. So, it was your job to trick him into telling you its location, and Nikolai and Clara were there for backup. Clara looked over at you, and you both made eye contact. You moved lock of your hair behind your left ear and blinked twice. You then saw Clara reach across the table to take Nikolai's hand in hers. That was her signal to him. The two of them stood up and left the café. You looked over at Filipacchi. He was glancing at his watch.

"Say, sugar. Why are you so jumpy? I don't think I've ever seen anyone so nervous in my whole life." he glanced over at you, and you subtly batted your eyelashes at him. He sighed, as though thinking that you'd be safe to talk to.

"I'm on the run." he said quietly.

"From who?" you said, eyes widening. Gosh, you hadn't been doing it for that long, and you were already tired of playing the dumb, weak female type.

"From people who want to kill me." you gasped. He apparently thought you were too loud and quickly shushed you.

"Why would anyone want to kill someone so handsome as you?" you asked. If Bucky knew what you were doing, he'd have stormed his way to Berlin to kill you.

"I stole something from them." you looked away from him as an attempt to look surprised.

"What did you steal?"

"Just some files, not jewels or anything like that." you tried to look relieved.

"Those must be some files, then, if someone wants to kill you." he nodded his head.

"They are classified files about a terrible organization that I used to work for. After that I realized how terrible that they were, I stole he files and left."

"Wow, that sure sounds brave." He shook his head.

"No, I was a coward. I shouldn't have stolen the files. Now I am on the run, and I am putting everyone around me in danger."

"What is so bad about this organization?"

"I shouldn't tell you. I wouldn't want them to come after you or hurt you because you spoke to me in the first place. I should get going." he stood up to leave, but you grabbed onto the sleeve of his coat to stop him.

"Wait. Where are you going to go?" He sighed and looked around.

"Not sure. I haven't decided yet."

"If you need somewhere to hide, you can stay at my place." He shook his head.

"No, I couldn't possibly do that to you. I can't let them hurt you. Also, we just met, so I couldn't possibly impose on you like that." You stood up and gathered your things, folding up the forgotten letter and putting it into your purse.

"I don't care about my safety. I want to help you, and I don't care if they hurt me. You are in trouble, and I want to help you." Filipacchi sighed.

"Are you sure." you nodded and placed your arm through his.

"Let's go. I'll show you where I live." The two of you left the café, and Filipacchi was instantly tackled by Nikolai. Clara produced vines out of her hands and had them tie Filipacchi up. He was incredibly surprised and speechless for only a moment before he started to yell.

"I should have known that you were Hydra scum. I never should have trusted you! You tell Peirce that he will never get his files back. I have them hidden where he will never be able to find them!" Nikolai knocked him out cold. Even though he couldn't understand English, Nikolai knew what needed to be done to the traitor. Your eyes began to fill with tears. Is this what you had become? Someone who hunts those who are doing what is right? You wiped away your tears and let your new identity sink in. You were now a villain, no matter what you tried to tell yourself, and you weren't going to change any time soon.
