Forget Me Not

I pulled on fresh clothes, straightened my bedhead and put on eyeliner... just because I knew Kai liked it on me. I ran past Aunt Tracy on the way out and she yelled for me to take a taxi. I ignored her and started my jog to the soccer field. I knew he had practices every Sunday morning, and I was determined to see him again, I needed to talk to him.

It took almost thirty minutes to jog there, but I made it just in time to catch the last fifteen minutes of the game. I saw Kai out on the field; his soft brown hair, his grooved back and toned statue. I could spot him from miles off. But I didn't have to as I walked to the bleachers and sat on the side close to the facilities building at the end of the field. He was running with the ball and was just about to kick the ball into the net when he looked over and saw me. He froze up just at the wrong moment and an opponent snatched the ball away. His teammates yelled at him to stop spacing out, but he stood still in place, staring at me. I could see him blink a few times, probably making sure I was real. A player walked over to him, I recognized him as Tom from the party, and he looked over to see what Kai was starting at. Tom turned away from me and faced Kai, putting both hands on Kai's shoulders, talking to him. I was wondering what he was telling Kai, not to talk to me, to just ignore me, or to talk with me and grow some actual balls?

After a minute the coach started to yell at both of them to get going and the two boys jogged to the inner field to finish the practice. I waited till the end when the team started to jog back towards me and the facility building for showers. I stood up as Kai got closer, but as I stood he walked to the opposite side of the group of boys and was swept inside the building. Yup, he was definitely avoiding me. I walked off of the bleachers and onto the edge of the field. It looked to empty without all those guys running around out there. The sky was clear and the heat of the day was starting to really get to me, my black clothes were making me over heat. I moved over to the side of the building under the shade of the roof and waited. I waited for almost an hour and almost convinced myself that they'd all left through a secret back entrance when the door opened. I looked up expectantly hoping for Kai, but instead I was met by Tom. His light blond hair wet from the showers and he had his bag slung over his shoulder. He looked over at me with pity in his eyes.

"You're still hear, eh?" He said sadly.

"Yes. Is he in there?"

"Yeah, He's fretting about you." Tom said as he shrugged off his bag and sat down on the grass next to me.

"Really?" I asked, my hopes lifted, at least he was worrying, at least he still cared.

"Yeah, he thinks he took it too far, but he... he's pretty messed up to be honest." A wave of concern flashed though me and my stomach curdled.

"What happened? Is he okay? Oh god, did... did he do something to hurt himself?" My mind was racing with worry at Tom's words. Tom looked taken aback, but then a small smile came onto his face.

"You really love him don't you?" In my panic and flustered worry I replied without thinking.

"Of coarse I love him!" It came out rushed and warbled in a wall of emotion. He smiled as red blush crept onto my face as I realized that I said it out loud for the first time.

"The reason he's messed up is because he doesn't have you, and he's worried about how you're taking the break up. You're practically all he talks about." My stomach settled a bit as I realized that i had jumped to too many wild conclusions. He was worried about me! Thank god, that still meant he cared, he still cared! I let out a long sigh and leaned my head against the back of the building.

"I miss him so much..." I whispered to Tom, "I just want to talk with him. I don't know what's going on and... and I just want to know why."

"If you ask me, he made a huge mistake." He looked over at me with sadness in his eyes, "You guys were really good for each other. I could tell how much happier you made him, he played better on the field, he smiled more, he talked more, and he just seemed like his old self again. But now, he's back to his moody, dark part of himself. It's like after him and Ellie broke up." My heart broke at Tom's words and I just wanted to see Kai again. I wanted to talk with him and hug him and make everything go back to normal.

At that moment the door to the building opened and a few more guys from the team walked out with their bags thrown over their shoulders, talking and laughing with each other; Kai wasn't with them.

"Should be out any minute." Tom said to me, "I'll leave you to it then." I nodded and he stood up, grabbing his soccer bag.

"Tom?" I asked before he walked off.

"Yeah?"

"What did you say to him on the field?" That surprised him for a second, he paused as he thought of what to say.

"I told him that he wasn't being fair to himself." He told me with a melancholic tone.

"What does that mean?"

"It means that he loves you too." And with that he walked away, leaving my heart open and fluttering, excited to try and catch Kai on his way out. I didn't know if I should believe what Tom said, but a little part of me knew that he loved me. It was the way he ever so delicately held my hand, and how he always asked me how my day was every single time I saw him, and how I always caught him staring at me and when I looked at him, he didn't try to look away, he just smiled with his whole being.

So I sat outside the soccer facilities building for another half hour until the door finally opened. This time the group of boys were quiet and instead of walking in the same direction as the others thy stopped in front of me. A few were looking directly at me, and to be honest, it was quite menacing.

"You need to leave." One of them said in a saddened tone. I looked up at him and he had dark brown skin with short black hair. His eyes were big and sincere, I knew that he didn't want to be telling me to go. I nodded and started to get up, but as I straitened out the door opened. There stood Kai, his brown hair, wet and in curls surrounding his flawless face. His forehead was scrunched as if in pain and he looked at me with those brown eyes.

"Hey." I whispered. He didn't say anything, just stared at me with a troubled, conflicted expression. The other boys were just as surprised as I was and we all stood in confusion as we waited for Kai's next move.

"Jasper," He said, his voice cracking as he spoke. "I... I can't do this right now." He stuttered, hurriedly turned away and his confused teammates looked from me to him, concern etched in their faces. It was nice to know that Kai was being cared for while I wasn't there, but seeing him run away from my was like a blow straight to my chest. Kai started to speed walk away and his mates started to follow, a few sending me pity filled glances, one even mouthed "Sorry" at me as they all followed Kai down the street.
