Chapter 13: Frozen Hearts

The group of five had turned around the corner of the cliff, since Olaf found a set of stairs leading to where they needed to go. The stairs were made of ice and led to a castle made from ice as well. Pillars supported the structure as the ice shone as the sun's light fell across it. Walking closer, the group could see that snowflakes were across the ice, making a pattern, and making it more elegant that it already was.

"Now, that's ice," Kirstoff said as Olaf was already walking on the stairs. "I might cry."

"Go ahead. I won't judge," Anna stated as she looked at the ice castle before continuing forwards with Y/N walking behind her.

"I always knew she could make things of such beauty, but wow," Y/N commented as he held onto one of the railings of the stairs as they climbed them.

Sven tried to climb the stairs, but fell down on the stairs due to the slippery nature of the frozen ice. He then tried to get back up, but was struggling.

"All right, take it easy, boy. Come here," Kirstoff said to the reindeer as he went over to help him back down. "I got you. Okay. You stay right here, buddy."

Sven then sat down as Kirstoff then started to walk up the stairs as well. "Flawless."

Y/N, Anna, and Olaf were standing at the main door to the ice castle. Anna held her hand up to knock, but the stopped as she though of what would make this time different than any of the other many times she has knocked upon her door.

"Knock... Just knock," Olaf told her as he then side-eyed Kirstoff before looking at Anna again. "Why isn't she knocking?"

Olaf then leaned to Y/N, who knew what she was feeling at the moment. She was unsure of herself if anything would be different. "Do you think she knows how to knock?"

Anna turned to Y/N as he nodded his head to her. She smiled back and then knocked on the door with the same pattern from when she used to try when they were younger.

It only took a few knocks as the doors then opened inward, making Anna gasp. "Huh. It opened. That's a first," She commented as she realized something and then turned to Kirstoff. "Oh. You should probably wait out here."

"What?" Kirstoff asked.

"The last time I introduced her to a guy, she froze everything," Ana explained to him.

"Bu, but... Oh, come on!" Kirstoff whined as Olaf moved to stand next to Y/N and Anna. "It's a palace made of ice. Ice is my life!"

"Bye, Kirstoff," Olaf said as he turned to start going inside of the castle.

"You should wait too, Olaf," Y/N informed him and pulled his twig arm to pull the snowman back.

"Me?" He asked.

"Just give us a minute," Anna explained as she keeled down to him before standing up as the two then started to go inside.

"Okay," Olaf replied as he then started to count to sixty for a minute to be up. "One, two."

Kirstoff sat down on the ice as Olaf joined him. "Three..." The snowman continued as Kirstoff then joined him as well. "Four..."

Y/N and Anna had walked into the castle as the doors closed behind them. They saw that everything in the castle was made from the same elegant ice as the exterior was as well. There was a winding staircase that led to a second floor along with a fountain in the middle of the room. However, it was way too quiet.

"Elsa?" Y/N called out.

"It's us, Anna and Y/N," Anna then called out as well as she almost slipped on the ice as Y/N helped her regain her footing.

"You okay?" He asked as Anna nodded back as her reply.

"Anna?" A voice asked, as the two looked up the stairs to see Elsa at the top. They were surprised to see her new appearance.

Elsa had a small smile for her sister as she then met Y/N's eyes as he looked right into her eyes as well. He knew that this was how she always wanted to be, but had to be the 'good girl.'

"Y/N..." She almost whispered as the two were still able to hear it.

"Whoa. Elsa, you look different," Anna admired her new dress and hair style. "It's a good different. Wouldn't you agree, Y/N?"

"You're gorgeous," Y/N complemented Elsa as the two felt the same way that they they did when they danced previously a little bit.

"Thank you," Elsa blushed a little at the compliment from her best friend as their eyes never left each other. "You look handsome as always."

Anna did not know what to do as the two flirted as she took in the look of the ice castle. "This place... It's amazing."

Elsa was broken from the staring that she was doing at Y/N, as was Y/N from his staring at Elsa.

"Thank you," Elsa replied to her. "I never knew what I was capable of."

"I always knew," Y/N added as the two started up the stairs.

"I'm sorry about what happened. If I'd have known..."

"No, no, no. It's okay," Elsa told her as she backed away a little. "You don't have to apologize, but you should probably go. Please."

"But we just go here," Anna added, not understanding.

"You belong down in Arendelle," Elsa explained.

"You do as well, though," Y/N stated.

"No, Y/N," Elsa shook her head. "I belong here. Alone. Where I can be who I am without hurting anybody."

"You shouldn't be alone," Y/N frowned at the thought of Elsa being unworthy of having anyone's company with her.

"Actually, about that..." Anna started as she was going to explained what was happening to Arendelle that the moment.

"Sixty!" Olaf exclaimed as he then came in running once a minute was up.

"Wait," Elsa said. "What is that?"

"Hi! I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!" The snowman exclaimed as he continued to run over to Y/N and Anna.

"Olaf?" Elsa asked.

"Yeah. You built me," He added. "Remember that?"

"And you're alive?" Elsa continued.

"Um..." Olaf stammered as he moved his twig arms and hands. "I think so."

Elsa then looked at her hands in wonder of the very though of being able to bring the snowman from their childhood to life.

"He's just like the one we built as kids," Y/N explained to her as Anna knelt down to the snowman.

"We were so close. We can be like that again," She added.

Elsa wanted that, but her eyes then landed upon the white streak in Anna's hair. The constant reminder of what she accidentally did to her, and her biggest fear. Elsa turned and started to go back up the stairs. "No, we can't. Goodbye."

"Please, Elsa," Y/N pleaded.

"Elsa, wait!" Anna called out.

"No. I am just trying to protect the both of you," She told them.

"You don't have to protect me. I'm not afraid," Anna explained as Y/N and herself started to move up the stairs to follow her.

"I've never been afraid of you," Y/N added.

"Please don't shut me out again," Anna continued as they followed Elsa with Anna starting to sing a tune similar to that from when they were young. "Please don't slam the door. You don't have to keep your distance anymore."

Elsa started to go up a set of stairs that led to the third floor of the ice castle as the two continued to follow her.

"'Cause for the first time in forever, I finally understand," Anna continued.

"Elsa, please," Y/N added.

"We can fix this hand in hand," Anna sang.

"We can all go back to Arendelle together. I know you, and I know that is what you want. You won't make things worse," Y/N tried to reassure her.

"You don't have to live in fear," Anna continued to sing as they reached the third floor with Y/N and herself standing in the doorway that had another set of doors on the other side. "'Cause for the first time in forever. I will be right here."

"I'm not going back without you," Y/N told Elsa.

"Y/N. Anna," Elsa started as she turned to them. "Please go back home. Your lives await. Go enjoy the sun and open up the gates. Y/N, your life is yours. Don't waste it on me. There's a world out there, that you should see."

"Yeah, but.../But, you're my-" Anna and Y/N started as Elsa stopped them.

"I know," Elsa told them. "You both mean well, but leave me be."

She then opened up the other set of doors to the balcony outside and stepped outside of the doors. "Yes, I'm alone. But I'm alone and free."

Y/N and Anna followed her.

"But it's tearing you apart," Y/N stated as he looked into her eyes. "I can see it in your eyes."

"Just stay way and you'll be safe from me," Elsa continued to sing as she then went back inside.

"Actually, we're not," Anna then sang to tell her.

"What do you mean, you're not?" Elsa sang back as she turned to face the two.

"You don't know?" Y/N asked as he saw that Elsa was already emotional over them even being there. "Anna, now might not be the best time."

"What do I not know?" Elsa sang to ask back.

"Arendelle's in deep, deep, deep, deep snow," Anna told her.

"What?" Elsa asked as the news shook her to her very being.

"After the party you... Um..." Y/N stammered as he was unsure of how to easily tell her the news of what happened.

"You kind of set off an eternal winter everywhere," Anna then told her.

Y/N whipped around to Anna. "Okay, easing the news would have been better..."

"Everywhere?" Elsa asked as it started to snow inside of the castle due to the state of Elsa's emotions.

"Well, it's okay, you can just unfreeze it," Anna explained.

"No, I can't. I don't know how," Elsa told her.

"We can figure it out," Y/N added. "Everything will be okay, just breathe."

"We both know that no matter how long we try to figure it out, it will not happen. The ideas you've had about how your magic works and trying to show me that way to use it... It just does not work."

"But I know you can," Anna told her. "Cause for the first time in forever."

"Oh, I'm such a fool! I can't be free!"

"You never really believed in yourself. I believe in you. It's time for you to believe in you, Elsa," Y/N explained to her.

"You don't have to be afraid," Anna continued to sing

"N escape from the storm inside of me," Elsa added as the snowfall  started to become a blizzard.

"Elsa!" Y/N called out to her. "You need to breathe! You're remarkable you know! You made this castle! You made Olaf come to life!"

"We can work this out together," Anna sang.

"I can't control the curse!" Elsa continued.

"I'll help you learn how to! No matter how long it takes!" Y/N explained.

"We'll reverse the storm you've made," Anna added.

"Please you'll only make it worse!" Elsa exclaimed.

"Elsa! Elsa!" Y/N called out as the blizzard started to drown out his voice.

"Don't panic," Anna told her.

"There's so much fear!" Elsa sang as she turned to the ice wall and saw a reflection of herself in it.

"We'll make the sun shine bright."

"You're both not safe here!" Elsa told them.

"We can face this thing together," Anna continued as she used her hands to block the wind from hitting her face from the blizzard.

"No!" Elsa added as her panic was running rampant. Her emotions were getting too strong as her magic was building up as she did not hear Anna's next sentence.

"I CAN'T!" Elsa screamed out as a wave of her magic was released, striking Anna in the heart.

Y/N tried to block it wave of magic with is lightning, but the wave was so fast that it hit him as well in his heart. The collision of the two forms of magic also made the Lieutenant go flying back as he hit the icy wall and fell unconscious upon impact as he fell to the floor.

"Y/N!" Anna yelled out as she tried to run over to him, but then fell down to one knee due to the pain she felt in her chest as she tried to fight it.

Elsa turned as she then saw the two and gasped in fear and felt instant shock and guilt. Both of her fears had happened. She hurt Y/N and Anna.

"Anna!" Kirstoff called out as she then slid on his knees over to her on the ice with Olaf running in behind him. "Are you okay?"

"I'm okay," Anna told him as he helped her up as she stood tall to show her sister.

"But Y/N's not. I think he might be dead," Olaf explained as he then saw Y/N's chest rise and fall. "But he's breathing... Maybe he's a zombie!?"

Hearing Olaf say that Y/N was dead was enough along to make Elsa start to tear up at the very thought as she then saw Kirstoff. "Who's this? Wait, it doesn't matter. Just..."

"No, I know we can figure this out together," Anna explained to Elsa as Olaf ran out of the room.

"How?" Elsa asked her. "What power do you have to stop this winter? To stop me?"

"Anna, I think we should go," Kirstoff offered her.

Olaf then came running back into the room with a pile of snow. He dropped it by Y/N's head and then moved him onto it. "There you go zombie Y/N. Now you won't have a neck cramp when you wake up from your nap."

"No," Anna said as she broke out of Kirstoff guiding hold on her. "I'm not leaving without you or Y/N."

"Yes. You are," Elsa told her as she waved her hands and her ice shot out of them. A huge snowman arose from the floor as it towered over Anna, Kirstoff, and Olaf who had come to stand near them.

The huge snowman then grabbed the three of them to take them out of the castle. As Anna called her sisters name a few times as Elsa turned away from them.

"You're so soft!" Olaf exclaimed as the huge snowman started to leave the room. "Like a Marshmallow. Ooo! That's going to be your new name! Marshmallow!"

"What about Y/N?" Kirstoff added as Marshmallow turned the corner.

Elsa had already gone to her best friend's side. She wanted to hug him, check his heartbeat, and make sure that he was going to be okay.  However, she was always afraid to touch him. Even though he had proven to her that just by holding hands nothing would happen to him, Elsa was not willing to chance it and accidentally turn him to ice.

Elsa used her magic to create a bed out of the finest snow she would make for Y/N to rest upon as she then sat down on the bed next to him as she was focusing on keeping her magic in control.

Marshmallow had just tossed Anna and Kirstoff out of the ice castle after going down to the main doors of the castle as he still held onto Olaf.

"Go away," The huge snowman informed them as Anna and Kirstoff slid down the stairs of ice that led to the castle. They slid past Sven, who had his tongue stuck to the railing of the ice stairs.

"Head up!" Olaf warned the two as his head was thrown into a mound of snow next to them as they stood up and just missed hitting Kirstoff. "Watch out for my butt!"

Anna ducked and Kirstoff fell back to avoid being hit by the other two pieces of the snowman's body, making Anna gasp.

"It is not nice to throw people!" Anna shouted as she had a handful of snow into a snow ball, ready to throw it back.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, feisty-pants," Kirstoff told her as he started to hold her back. "Okay, relax. Just calm down! Calm down!"

"Okay! All right!" Anna breathed. "I'm okay."

"Just let the snowman be," Kirstoff added.

"I'm calm," Anna replied as she turned away.

"Great."

She then grunted as she threw the snowball at Marshmallow.

"Oh! Come on!" Kirstoff whined.

The snowball hit the huge snowman who did not like that, not one bit as he roared with icicles coming out of his body as his eyes glowed a light blue color.

"Oh. Look, see? Now, you made him mad," Kirstoff told Anna.

"I'll distract him," Olaf said as the two turned to him as he waved his twig arms. "You guys go."

The two started to run as Sven ran away as well. The parts of Olaf's body, minus his head, fell on top of each other upon the ground as they then started to run away as well. "No, no! Not you guys!" Olaf exclaimed as Marshmallow walked past him, making his head fall onto the ground now. "This just got a whole lot harder."

Anna and Kirstoff had slid down the mountain as Marshmallow then jumped down and landed behind them as he roared. Kirstoff helped Anna back up as the two continued to run into the forest as the huge snowman swung his arms at them.

There was a tree that was bent over due to the weight of snow upon it as Anna went to it as Kirstoff ran past the tree.

"What are you doing?" He asked Anna when he quickly noticed that he was no longer running next to him.

Anna pulled the tree back as it whipped Marshmallow, hitting his face and knocking him back as Anna then regrouped with Kirstoff.

The two laughed.

"I got him!" Anna exclaimed as the two continued to run.

They almost ran right off of the cliff they were on as Kirstoff quickly held Anna back as a part of the frozen snow broke off and plummeted to the ground below. "Whoa! Stop!"

"It's a 100-foot drop," Anna thought.

"It's 200," Kirstoff corrected her as he then tied the rope he had in his sack tightly around her waist. He then took the ice pick and dug a formation into the frozen snow.

"What's that for?" Anna asked.

"I'm digging a snow anchor," He explained as he placed the rope into the new formation.

"Okay. What if we fall?" She then asked.

"There's twenty feet of fresh powder down there. It'll be like landing on a pillow," He answered her as he finished up on the anchor. "Hopefully."

They then gasped as they heard Marshmallow getting closer. Kirstoff tossed the other end of the rope off the edge of the cliff.

"Okay, Anna. On three," Kirstoff started to counted a Anna prepared herself for what was about to happen.

"Okay."

"One..."

"You tell me when I'm ready to go."

"Two..."

"I was born ready! Yes!"

"Calm down."

A tree was then tossed into the air by Marshmallow and was going to hit them.

"Tree!" Anna exclaimed as she then jumped off of the cliff, pulling Kirstoff with her as he was holding onto the rope. The anchor held them as the dangled off of the cliff's side.

"That happened," Kirstoff commented.

On the top of the cliff, Olaf ran out of the tree line as his body parts were all in the wrong order.

"Oh, man, I am out of shape," He spoke as he then fixed himself up real quick. "There we go. Hey, Anna! Kirstoff! Where'd you guys go? We totally lost Marshmallow back there!"

Speaking of the huge snowman, he came out of the tree line right behind Olaf as he heard him and turned around.

"Hey! We were just talking about you," Olaf explained to him as the other two scaled down the cliff. "All good things, all good things."

Marshmallow then went forward to the snow anchor as Olaf failed to push him back. "No!" Olaf then jumped onto his leg. "This is not making much of a difference, is it?"

Marshmallow then kicked his leg as Olaf was sent flying off the edge of the cliff and down to the ground below as the smaller snowman sailed past Anna and Kirstoff.

"Olaf!" Anna screamed in worry.

He hit a part of the cliff as his body fell into pieces again. "Hang in there, guys!"

"Go. Go faster!" Anna pleaded to Kirstoff as he started to move faster for their descent.

They then stopped going down as they were starting to go upwards instead. "Wait, what?" Anna asked.

"Hey!" Kirstoff complained as they saw the hands of Marshmallow pulling them back up.

This made Anna try to undo the knot tided around the end of the rope that was around her.

On the way back up, Kirstoff hit the cliff's side with his head as he was dazed a little.

"Kirstoff!" Anna called.

Marshmallow then pulled them up to his face as they all looked at one another. "Don't come back!" The snowman roared as he breathed snow onto them.

"We won't!" Anna told him as she grabbed a knife from Kirstoff's belt and cut the rope making them fall to the ground below as they screamed.

They fell for a few seconds before hitting the pillow soft snow covered ground as everything was quiet.

"Hey, you were right," Anna told Kirstoff as she sat up in the snow with the white powder falling from her hair. "Just like a pillow! Olaf!"

Olaf was painting. "I can't feel my legs! I can't feel my legs!" He continued as he touched the two feet sticking out of the snow in front of him.

"That's because those are my legs," Kirstoff explained as he sat up behind Olaf, with his lower body running over.

"Oh! Hey, do me a favor, grab my butt," Olaf told Kirstoff as he did so and put him back together. "Oh. That feels better."

Sven then came over to the snowman and started to smell him.

"Hey, Sven! He found us," Olaf commented as he turned to Anna and Kirstoff as the reindeer tried to eat the carrot nose. The snowman then cuddled Sven's head. "Who's my cute little reindeer?"

"Don't talk to him like that." Kirstoff told him as he pulled them apart before getting up to help Anna out of the snow. "Here?"

"Whoa!" Anna said as he lifted her up before setting he back with her feet down onto the ground.

"Are you okay?"

"Thank you," Anna replied as they looked into each other's eyes for a second as Anna then touched his forehead. "How's your head?"

"Ah! Ooh!" He sounded as he then stammered. "It's fine. Uh... Uh, I'm good. I've got a thick skull."

"I don't have a skull. Or bones," Olaf commented.

"So, uh... So, now what?" Kirstoff asked.

"Now what?" Anna asked at the same time as she pulled a strand of her hair back as she started to think. Panic started to overtake her as it started to snow again. "Now what? Oh... What am I going to do? She threw me out! And Y/N is still there and who knows when he is going to wake back up!? I can't go back to Arendelle with the weather like this. And then there's your ice business-"

"Hey, hey," Kirstoff chimed in. "Don't worry about my ice business. And I'm sure that Y/N will be fine. With him still there, maybe he can talk to her and still fix the weather."

"You have a point," Anna stated.

"I'd worry about your hair," Kirstoff then said.

"I just fell off a cliff. You should see your hair," Anna rebutted as her hair started to turn the same color as her white strand.

"No, your is turning white," Kristoff told her.

"What? It's..." Anna started as she then looked at one of her braids. "What?"

"It's because she struck you, isn't it?" Kirstoff then asked.

"Does it look bad?" She asked.

Kirstoff looked for a moment. "No."

"You hesitated," Olaf informed.

"N-No, I didn't," He then told the snowman.

"Anna, you need help, okay?" Kirstoff explained as he started to walk off. "Come on."

"Okay! Where are we going?" Olaf then asked.

"To see my friends," Kirstoff told them as the group of three started to follow him.

"The love experts?" Anna asked as Kirstoff bent down to grab his hat.

"Love experts?" Olaf excitedly asked as well.

"Uh-huh."

"And don't worry, the'll be able to fix this," He added as he put the hat onto his head.

"How do you know?" Anna asked him.

He turned and walked backwards as he looked at her. "Because I've seen them do it before."

Olaf turned to Anna as they continued to follow Kirstoff. "I like to consider myself a love expert."
