Chapter 102

Third person pov

Kosei groggily raised his head as the man in the straight jacket halted in his pursuit towards them, one foot still in the air. It didn't look as though he should've been able to balance in the position he was in. Bakugo released a shuddering breath of air, slightly hunched over now that his extra passenger wasn't so weightless anymore. One of his hands was still gripping Lillian's tightly, the other hooked under Concussion Boy's leg. The freckled girl looked pale with fear, her free hand coming up to clutch her stomach as her gut twisted painfully. She was right in assuming he was strong. Not as strong as Endeavor was, but enough that she'd start coughing up blood soon.

This whole thing was so surreal; though, it shouldn't have been. She should've seen this shit coming from a mile away. The fact that she was surprised made her want to curse herself. It was better to always assume the worse. Then, when shit wasn't nearly as bad as you expected, you'd be pleasantly surprised. But no. Lillian had managed to lull herself into a false sense of security without even realizing it. It was completely idiotic of her. She felt like a total cabbage for her naivety.

"Restrain him." Lillian choked out, her throat beginning to burn threateningly. Bakugo immediately let Kosei slip off his back. The freckled girl did her best to catch him and bring him down slower as her explosive companion rushed forward. It was pretty clear this guy's quirk had something to do with his mouth. Not only was it the only thing exposed, but the cannibalistic speech implied it had something to do with eating. Perhaps his quirk was related to his teeth, or something that was expelled from his stomach and through his throat, eventually exiting via his mouth. Lillian really didn't want to find out.

Katsuki tried to keep his nerves at bay. He knew Lillian would keep him frozen, but there was still something about the guy that made him terrifying, even when he was immobile. His heart was thudding hard in his chest. He and Lillian were in danger here, only it was different than it had been at the USJ. Their teacher wasn't here. They were miles out, in the middle of nowhere, and there was no telling where their classmates had landed. They had to operate under the horrifying supposition that it was just the two of them out here, along with the Concussed Fuck over here. Counting on help coming would only serve to get them killed, whether it was true or not.

Bakugo pulled out the things keeping the man's mouth open, as disgusting as that felt, and forced his jaw shut as carefully as he could. He didn't want to risk breaking Lillian's control. Just glancing back at her, he could already see red seeping past her lips as she kept her eyes trained on the petrified enemy. The whole thing made his damn blood boil! Who did these villains think they were? They were having a good ass time at this summer camp. They were getting stronger, so of course the League would have to show up like a bunch of dumbasses and ruin that shit. And before Bakugo could devour that tasty-ass curry he and Lillian had made with minimal help from all the extras, too.

There wasn't much to work with restraints wise. They really didn't need the guy opening his mouth, because that was pretty clearly where his quirk was centered. Bakugo cursed as he pulled vines from nearby trees. This place was well cultivated by the Wild, Wild Pussycats, meaning there was a vast variety of different flora to choose from. For once, he was glad their hero teachers were over the top. The vines were thick enough to hold the weight of a person, meaning they were probably strong enough to hold him. Bakugo gathered as many as he could. Trying to tie his jaw shut would be awkward, but he was sure as shit going to give it his all. He didn't want this cannibalistic fuck trying to take a bite out of either of them. What if they got rabies?

The pair tried not to look at the severed hand a ways away. Lillian sometimes would let her eyes drift over to it, wondering who it belonged to. It made her want to vomit when she realized it looked familiar. She had to force herself away from thinking about it to avoid losing her mind completely. Her brain cells were slowly dying off. Bon-voyage, you sad fucks! Hey guys, welcome to her YouTube channel. Catch her sister snatching Harambe when they stormed Area 51, if she lived long enough to make it to America. She needed a bag of Doritos and a blanket to hide under.

Lillian took more deep breaths, tremors tearing through her body. Where were her friends and other classmates? Were they okay? What about her dad? Not that he could actually die, but details, details!  A million questions flew through her head, and there was no way she'd be able to get answers unless they made it back to camp. That's what scared her the most about this whole thing. There was no telling how much further they'd have to go to get back to safety-- and that was assuming camp was actually safe. They could run into anyone or anything out there, and that notion terrified her. She knew she'd signed up to be a hero. Lillian wanted to save people still, and that wasn't something she felt would change. But she was just so... so terrified

Bakugo cocooned the probably-batshit-crazy man in as many vines as he could get his hands on, mouth set in a firm line. He continued to shoot glances back at Lillian. Concussion Boy was weighing them down, and that wasn't good. Bakugo knew leaving him wasn't an option. Even if he didn't have Lillian to look after, it would be pretty dickish to try and leave the guy out here while he was so vulnerable. Not hero-like at all. Thus, they'd have to deal. Having Lillian to make him weightless made things a lot easier, but Bakugo had a sneaking suspicion he'd need his hands free.

"Try that." Katsuki still kept his voice low, even with the villain frozen. There could be anyone nearby, enemy, ally, feral bear-- it was impossible to tell. Lillian hoped her classmates hadn't gotten warped far, but wouldn't make the mistake of assuming they were safe either. Instead, she waited for Bakugo to back up completely before unfreezing the man in the straight jacket. Bakugo's hand fell on her shoulder, squeezing it when their enemy jerked in his restraints. A perplexed and agitated snarl left him as he tried to pry his mouth open. Lillian's hand found her explosive companion's forearm to grip onto as the villain writhed, her other arm still around Kosei to keep him from slipping down completely.

It was disturbing to watch, but Lillian took solace in Bakugo's presence. She honestly had no idea what she'd do without him here. Lillian was sure she'd find a way, but things would be hard with Kosei. It was almost comforting to know things could've been worse. Could be worse. But Bakugo was someone she trusted with her life, and she liked to think he trusted her with his own. They could get through this. Maybe they'd get a few bumps and bruises along the way, but Lillian had to believe they'd make it out alive.

"D-Do you think i-it'll hold?" Lillian asked fearfully as the man thrashed, furious screams escaping from behind the durable plants. Bakugo had taken extra care with his head, wrapping them from his chin to the top of his head, as well as around the mouth to cover it. It wasn't much, but it's what they had. The explosive blonde looked over his hasty work, satisfied that he'd done a good enough job. He was a fucking badass, after all. He was just glad there were vines available. He probably wouldn't have thought of them if they hadn't trekked through the woods when they'd first gotten here.

"Yeah." He answered after a moment, his voice softer than Lillian ever thought it'd be in a crisis situation like this. "I'll still knock the fucker out."

"G-Good idea." Lillian nodded, swallowing heavily. The taste of iron sat disgustingly on her tongue, but she managed not to gag. Blood wasn't something she'd ever get used to having pressed up against her taste buds, even if she'd long since adjusted to the pain that came with overusing her quirk. The twisting in her stomach didn't feel nearly as agonizing as it had the first time she'd felt it at the USJ. Though it was far from her favorite feeling in the world, it was a sign her quirk was properly doing its job. Like insurance that the man wouldn't be able to break out on his own. Lillian didn't see how he could, but the idea of her freezing an enemy only to have them snap out of it had always been something that terrified her.

Bakugo moved to kick the man in the head when a chilling feeling washed over them. It wasn't from an adversary, however. This was the familiar sensation Mandalay's quirk brought with it when she chose to communicate with them all. It sent shivers down both of their spines without them really being able to control it. Lillian started to stand, pulling Kosei up with her the best she could. His head lolled forward like it weighed the same as a sack of bricks, bobbing as he struggled to retain consciousness. Lillian didn't know him, but she held him as comfortingly as she could, even if he probably had no idea what was going on right now. She didn't want him to be afraid.

"Everyone in Class A and Class B!" Mandalay sounded tired and strained, but sure. It was eerie how her voice rang in their heads, even though they were unable to reply. "In the name of the pro hero, Eraserhead, you are granted permission to engage in combat. I repeat. Use your training. You may fight these villains!"

Lillian looked to Bakugo grimly. If they were really being given the green light to defend themselves using their quirks despite the many laws in place that restricted them from doing so, then things were just as bad as they thought, if not worse. Lillian glanced back down at the struggling villain. There were definitely more, and she was probably their best chance at taking them down quickly and efficiently. Even if she could only manage a few seconds on some, that would be enough for a pro or one of their other classmates to get a good hit in and knock them unconscious. Getting back was crucial, especially considering they had someone injured with them who needed immediate medical help.

"Dammit." Bakugo hissed, kicking the enemy hard in the head. The man snarled, so the blonde kicked him harder. Lillian winced slightly at the cracking noise that emitted due to Katsuki's rage and frustration, but couldn't blame him. Alongside her fear mingled anger. It frustrated her that this was happening at all. What did they do to provoke the League this time? Breathe? The whole thing was so infuriating. She could just feel her eyes burn with the urge to light up red. Lillian was trying to analyze this bullshit to find a reason, but really couldn't see that good of one. They wanted to bring hero society down? Then why the triple fruit fuck were they attacking a bunch of teenagers?

Another chill washed over them as Bakugo moved to get Kosei on his back again, causing them to pause as Mandalay's voice filled their heads again. She sounded more composed this time. Winded, but better than she had been a few seconds prior. "Listen, we've discovered two of the Villains' targets! They're the students named Lillian and Kacchan." Mandalay said, and their eyes widened, half in surprise, and half in horror. Fucking fuck fuck! This day just kept getting better and better, didn't it? "Lillian, Kacchan, you should try to avoid combat. And stick to a group. I hope you can hear me!"

Lillian and Katsuki stared at each other with wide eyes for a moment, the sound of the nightlife buzzing around them softly doing nothing to soothe their nerves. Them. They were the targets. Why the fuck was luck shooting Lillian in the knee caps? Again? Fate owed her a fucking solid after all the shit it had put her through. She wasn't trying to be a baby about it or anything, but was this for real? Of course villains would attack the summer camp she'd been looking forward to since she first learned about it, and of course they'd be after her and one of her best and closest friends, who might even be her crush! She was too emotionally inept to tell! Dammit all!

"...Shit." Lillian breathed. Bakugo snapped out of it.

"Shit is right. Must've been Deku to tell her, then. Fucker wouldn't say my real name even if his life depended on it." The blonde shook his head, hoisting up Kosei a lot less carefully than he had been a few moments prior. He looked extremely pissed off, a vein on his forehead bulging. Of course he was! These fucking assholes were here, raining on his parade. Lillian was pale as a sheet and had been coughing up blood just moments before, which made him both proud and even angrier. He didn't want her to get hurt or be afraid. These damn villains... they were going to pay for this, dammit!

Lillian carefully froze Kosei again. The boy was weakened, so it wasn't too much of a toll to keep just him suspended. They started again as soon as he was secured, staying as quiet as they could while still picking up their pace. The sound of Vlad screeching echoed in the far distance, or perhaps it was another Nomu all together. Bakugo's hand once again found its way into hers as they walked. Neither would be wanting to go into the woods for a while after this, that's for sure. Lillian gripped Katsuki back tightly, eyes darting about in search of any enemies. They'd make it out of here. They had to.

In the distance, a gunshot sounded. And then another. Lillian wanted to say it was Chad, but... the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach told her it was anyone but.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aizawa skidded to a stop when Shoto Todoroki burst through the trees, holding onto Kota just a little harder as his quirk momentarily flared up. He was on edge, and Midoriya's state really hadn't helped that. He stopped himself the second he realized it was one of his students. The poor teen looked like he'd been run dry, tears staining his face and his skin an unhealthy shade of red. A fire in the palm of his hand emitted a small amount of light as he slid to an abrupt stop in front of his teacher. Aizawa stared with wide eyes as more tromping sounded behind him, Vlad rushing out from beyond the overgrown bushes and looming trees.
The blood drained from Shota's face when he realized who Vlad was holding. Hooded purple eyes full of agony met his dry, dark ones. His voice caught in his throat, his grip on Kota slackening so much so that the child had to scramble to latch onto him to avoid being dropped. He could see now why Todoroki had been crying, and why he looked so distressed. Panic of his own welled up inside him at the bloody cloth over where Hitoshi's left hand should've been. Only his hand very clearly wasn't under that shirt, now stained crimson. Bile rose in his throat. This was his daughter's best friend. Her brother.
"I-I-I'm o-okay." Hitoshi was so pale you could almost see through his skin, his veins looking more prominent as they contrasted against his new complexion. His teeth were chattering despite the summer humidity and heat wafting from the nearby flames. It was abundantly clear that he was not fine. He was missing a limb. One of his hands. It had been amputated. One of the villains had-
"Follow Mr. Aizawa back to camp, Vlad." Shoto panted, a frosty breath escaping his mouth. The fog faded into the air quickly. "I'm going back to find Lillian."
"Todoroki-" Aizawa started, but the teenager whirled on him with a fire burning in his eyes. It was a look unlike anything he'd ever seen in the half-and-half boy, excusing that one time he'd tried to beat Neito on Rainbow Road, but they weren't going to think about that right now. His teeth were clenched, a war raging in his mismatched irises. Aizawa's grip on Kota tightened again. Hitoshi needed medical attention, and he needed it now. That much was clear. If Todoroki chose to run off, there wasn't much Aizawa could do.
"No." Todoroki tried to sound firm, but his voice trembled and shook. Tears rose in his eyes once more, surely without him meaning them to. Vlad gave a little distressed shriek, looking like he himself may start to cry soon. "No. I am going to find her. I-I can't-- the villains are after her. They're after her, and they're after Bakugo, and if they get taken-"
"G-Go, Sh-Sh-Shoto." Hitoshi's voice came out a rasp. Both turned to look at him. Aizawa hadn't expected him to speak, and his chest ached. He didn't claim to have favorites. As a teacher, he was supposed to view all his students in the same light. But this was his child's best friend and near-sibling. Aizawa had watched this young man grow into someone fit for the hero course. He had watched him fall and get back up again, and had watched him provide his daughter with unadulterated love and support, even before he'd been able to. He'd assured Aizawa when he found out Lillian was his, and helped convince Lillian to move in. So while he would never admit that he may favor Hitoshi over some of his other students, he could admit how much it hurt to see him like this. He felt like the air had been stolen straight out of his lungs.
"Be safe, Hitoshi." Shoto whispered, wiping at his eyes as another breath of chilled air left his mouth to cool him down. The purple-haired teenager, despite all the pain he was in, somehow managed to crack a shaky grin for his friend. Not because he felt like it, but because that's what Shoto needed.
"T'is b-b-but a fl-flesh wo-wound." Hitoshi assured, shaking his head slightly. Shoto stared at him for a long moment before turning and taking off into the trees with reckless abandon and a fresh flame in his hand to help light the way. Aizawa watched him go, turning back to Vlad and Hitoshi. The purple-haired boy's smile had completely dropped, his whole body back to trembling violently as his breaths left his in a short and staccato manner. Aizawa's expression hardened, and he looked to Vlad. The creature seemed to understand and nodded. The Erasure hero took off again, as fast as his feet would take him back in the direction of the facility Vlad King was in. They'd have first aid equipment there.
Aizawa wanted desperately to go after Shoto and to find his daughter, but he had a child to take care of now, and Hitoshi as well. He had to trust that Lillian would be able to fend for herself. Bakugo had dove in after her, so there was a good chance they were both together. That was even more of a comfort, especially considering Lillian's quirk. She'd survived the USJ, and she could survive this. Of that he was sure. While her apparent friendship with 1-A's most explosive student was questionable, he was glad they had it.
There was rustling beyond the trees to his left, and none other than Chad burst out. He had one of 1-B's students slung over his shoulders, another stumbling out after him. They were all wearing gas masks, and Chad had a huge spot of blood seeping into his shirt from his torso. It was definitely his. Aizawa didn't stop running, just jerking his head towards the direction of camp. The man seemed to get the memo and darted after him and Vlad both, concern for Hitoshi swimming in his gold eyes when the purple-haired teenager's head bobbed forward threateningly. He'd lost a lot of blood, and was in a lot of pain.
Chad was ready to bust some knee caps. He had warned the heroes and the police. Tsukauchi and Hawks both had come forward and insisted that the summer camp was going to be a failure. But no, that was impossible! Nobody but the teachers and students knew where it was going to be! News-fucking-flash, UA had gone to the Wild, Wild Pussycats for camp in the past. It wasn't that hard to figure out. On top of that, they'd told the parents of the students going, and just expected them not to let it slip? It was idiotic. This was completely on the heroes, because they knew. And they'd done nothing to prevent it.
"What happened?! Is he okay?!" Kendo asked, horrified by the Nomu and by Hitoshi, though for different reasons entirely. She seemed to understand that the creature was on their side however, so that was enough. Chad grit his teeth, eyes turning skyward. He couldn't see Hawks. One of Lillian's classmates-- the one with the bird head-- had lost control of his quirk. Hawks was trying to lead it towards the flames. Other heroes were on the way as well, though they truly couldn't get here fast enough.
"He'll be fine." Aizawa grunted as camp came into view. In his arms, Kota curled up into a tighter ball. "We'll all be fine."
Those words had never sounded so much like a lie.
-A few hours before-
"Something... Something is wrong." Mihoko frowned. She and Rei were sat out in front of an old hotel building with a faded 'For Sale' sign hanging in the front window. When Mihoko had realized nobody was going to buy it, she knew immediately what she had to do. Hajime was a surgeon, and she did freelance programming. They had money. Not to mention Rei had gotten a job to contribute. They'd saved their pennies, that's for sure. They'd been saving since before they even got married, and hadn't gone on enough vacations to make even a dent in the funds they'd managed to collect. So when Mihoko saw this place, she knew.
It was a big project, but she had plenty of people willing to help. Chad, Fuyumi, and even Hawks had volunteered their services and man power. Only the three of them weren't here today for some reason. The pair of brothers had been agitated as of late, but refused to say why. On top of that, Fuyumi hadn't shown up today either like she'd said she would. She'd sounded near frantic on the phone, telling them she had somewhere to be. When they'd asked, she just said that Hawks had requested her help with something. That was perplexing considering she and Hawks didn't seem to get along too well.
"I'm sure everything's alright, Mihoko. You're probably just feeling off because everyone is busy today." Rei assured softly, smiling. It was odd. She'd asked Tsukauchi if he'd wanted to come over today to help as well, but he'd also declined, sounding stressed, tired, and perplexing enough, scared. Not of her, she was sure, but there was something. "Inko will be here soon. We can get a lot done between the three of us, you know."
"I... You're right. Maybe I'm just overreacting." Mihoko allowed, but it felt... wrong. Something was wrong. She'd had a mom-sense before, but with each new child that came into her home, and even each new adult, it had honed itself to utter perfection. And right now? That maternal alarm built into her was ringing like a damn fire alarm. Something wasn't right, and she had no idea what it was.
"...Or maybe you're not?" Rei offered, frowning. "Do you want to try calling the camp?"
"Can we? I know we're only supposed to in case of an emergency, but something is just... off." Mihoko frowned. Rei nodded in agreement, though she couldn't say she understood how that felt. She had motherly instincts, but they weren't the best by any means. Mihoko's were far sharper than hers had ever been. The woman was an amazing parent. Rei aspired to be like her, because she was strong, and sure of herself. Rei did her best to take after that.
Inko's car pulled up as the pair of woman stood. The three of them had become good friends, jokingly calling themselves the "Mother's Union." It was a silly name, but it fit them. Rei smiled brightly at her green-eyed friend as she stepped out of the car, a drink carrier held in one hand and her keys in the other. Inko managed a small smile back, but also looked put out for some reason. This immediately made Rei uneasy. If it was just one of them feeling like something was wrong, that was different. But two? It set an uneasy feeling loose within Rei.
"Do you feel it too?" Mihoko asked as she took a coffee from the carrier. It was just a few hours past lunch time, and nobody was here. Normally Mihoko could get more than just her two closest friends over. Mic had said he'd be coming later, but that almost didn't count. The man had to work anyway. There was something in the air that just felt... out of sorts. Inko couldn't place it, and neither could Mihoko. They both shared a look.
"Oh, I don't know. I've just felt a bit off today. That's all." Inko assured with a smile, offering Rei her coffee. The white-haired woman took it graciously. Her life had changed so much since meeting Mihoko. Her and all her kids were godsends, and so was Inko. Though she was a bit embarrassed to say it, they were the best family she'd ever had. The two of them were like the sisters she'd never had. Of course, she'd had siblings before, but they could barely be called that with how focused they were on money. When her parents had sold her to Endeavor, they hadn't bat an eye. It still left an uncomfortable sting in her chest to think back on.
"Something feels wrong. Rei and I were going to call the camp to check in." Mihoko said, and Rei nodded.
"I'm sure everything is fine, but it never hurts to check. Aizawa will understand. Our kids are trouble makers, after all." Rei offered a grin that seemed to ease the two, who smiled back. Rei was probably right, and everything was just fine. Mihoko had Aizawa's personal cell saved in her phone, seeing as he was Lillian's father and the teacher to four of her children. She also had Vlad King's, for Neito.
Neito was still in the hospital, Hajime keeping a close eye on him and making sure he was comfortable. Mihoko hadn't been cleared to visit, but was pushing for it. The blonde's real parents had also been contacted, but had pretty much brushed the issue off. Mihoko was in the process of getting their names so she could contact them for full custody. She wasn't expecting a fight from them, but was ready for one just in case. She'd been taking care of that boy for months now with no word from them. She wanted him in her care completely and legally, so she could help him if anything happened. Like him having a mental breakdown and ending up in the hospital.
Inko and Rei both peered down at the phone as it rung, Mihoko having put it on speaker. It only took the man a few rings to pick up. That's one thing Mihoko enjoyed about Aizawa. Though she was a bit sour he'd snatched Lillian away from her home, she couldn't deny he made for an amazing father. Not as amazing as her Hajime, but he was decent for a beginner. Besides, Lillian was over at her house enough that it was like she never left. And the boys went to her place just barely often enough for her to brave that bedroom of theirs to clean out the many wrappers they managed to accumulate.
The call went through with no issues, and they held their breath.
"Shota Aizawa speaking." The gruff voice of Eraserhead emitted from the phone, and Mihoko frowned immediately. He sounded fine, but the sinking feeling in her chest had gotten far worse. Rei also looked a bit uncomfortable, one of her hands going to Inko's shoulder, and one going to Mihoko's as they all stared at the phone with furrowed brows. It didn't make sense. He hadn't even said anything.
"It's Mihoko Shinso speaking. I had a weird feeling and wanted to check in! Is everything alright?" Mihoko asked, her tone more chipper than she felt inwardly. Inko and Rei both shared a look. The white-haired woman understood now what the pair had been talking about. Something didn't feel right, and she wasn't sure why. There was no reason for her to feel like this. Was she accidentally tricking herself into feeling like this? There was a heavy sensation that started at her chest and ended in the pit of her stomach that didn't feel at all fabricated by her emotions. It was just... there.
"Yes, everything is fine. The students just got off a fifteen-minute break. I'm sure you're aware that your son had a mild sprain in his ankle, but he'll be fine in no time." Aizawa said formally. Teacher to parent, not parent to parent. Mihoko could understand that. She shared a look with the other two mothers present, and they looked grim. The camp was several hours away from where they were, but...
"Thank you, Eraserhead. I was just feeling a little worried. I'm glad to know nothing's come up." Mihoko said. Aizawa grunted on the other end, giving a begrudging 'It was no problem' before hanging up with no more fuss. Mihoko gripped her phone tightly, staring at it. Inko and Rei did the same, feeling disconcerted. He'd said everything was fine, and he wasn't the type to lie. There was a good chance everything was fine. There was just this... they couldn't describe it. The air felt heavier. Something was coming, and they weren't sure what.
"I'll drive." Inko said after a moment of silence, and that's all that needed to be said. Rei and Mihoko nodded to each other, hoisting up their bags. There wasn't much inside that would be of use for anything other than redoing the hotel, but there was no telling when it would come in handy. Fists clenched and motherly senses flaring, the trio entered Inko's minivan. The green-haired woman was pretty meek. She followed the rules society had set in place, and had never once gotten a ticket. Especially not for speeding.
That being said, she floored it.
