Chapter 2

Heatwave and Quickshadow were now married and living happily together. They were very close to each other now. Quickshadow was being a big help around the firehouse now that she lived there. Quickshadow was happy with her life with Heatwave and she didn't want to leave it.

They were doing many things together and learning what it was like to be married. They had their own share of disagreements but they realized things happen and that they could work it out.

It had been a couple of years. "I think we should have a baby sometime," Quickshadow said.

"Having a baby?" Heatwave asked. "I think it would be nice to be parents," he said. "But I don't know if we will be ready for it or not," he said. "I am a bit worried if we do I won't be a good father," he said.

"I understand that, but I know you will be a wonderful father, you are already a wonderful husband," Quickshadow said.

So the two of them began to try to have a baby. They were hoping for it to go well and soon get ready to have one. Heatwave and Quickshadow were hoping their wish would come true. Then one day Quickshadow wasn't feeling like herself and she knew she had been herself for several days so she took a pregnancy test to see if she was pregnant. She saw there was a sign that said pregnant in big letters. Quickshadow was so happy to see it. She came up to Heatwave and showed it too him. "I'm pregnant," Quickshadow said.

Heatwave saw the positive test and hugged Quickshadow happily. "This is great news," Heatwave said.

They made an appointment right away. A doctor saw Quickshadow and confirmed it with a test. "Congratulations you two," the doctor said.

Heatwave and Quickshadow smiled and kissed each other. They were so happy about this. They were looking forward to the birth of their baby. Now they were very busy getting ready for the baby. But they wanted to keep it under wraps until Quickshadow was three months pregnant in case a miscarriage happens. They were going to be very brave during that time.

Heatwave was busy thinking about Quickshadow and they baby they were going to have. That put a lot on his mind. He was thinking about fatherhood and hoping he was going to do well for it. He was going to do his best too.

Quickshadow was looking forward to having her baby. She was being very quiet about it she was used keeping her mouth shut about certain things so she was good at it. Quickshadow was seeing her baby doctor on a regular basis and so far things are going okay.

"Quickshadow seems to be leaving a lot then coming back later," Kade said. "I wonder why she is doing that," he said.

"I don't think any of it is our business Kade," Dani said.

"Heatwave you know Quickshadow has been going out a lot right?" Kade said.

"Yes I do know it and I know where she is going because she tells me," Heatwave said.

"Where is she going?" Kade asked.

"To the doctor," Heatwave said. He knew it was only a few hours before the big reveal.

"Is she alright?" Kade asked.

"What is she pregnant?" Dani asked.

Heatwave almost choked on his milk and swallowed it. "Lucky guess," Heatwave said.

"Wow that's great," Kade said.

"Yes it is," Dani said.

"It is but we have been keeping secret until the end of the three month mark which is today, we were suppose to reveal it to everyone in the firehouse later today when she gets back from the doctor," Heatwave said.

"I see," Dani said.

"Don't you two tell anyone else, and I am looking at you Kade," Heatwave said. "One time when you were told to keep a secret you blabbed about it," he said.

"That was one time," Kade said.

Heatwave saw Quickshadow come home a bit later and everyone was soon gathered in the firehouse. "Heatwave and I have announcement," Quickshadow said. "I am pregnant," she said.

"Congratulations," Graham said.

"How wonderful," Chief Burns said.

"That's great," Frankie said.

"That is good news," Professor Baranova said.

"That is amazing," Doc Greene said.

"Noble," Cody said.

"We are happy for you," Salvage said.

"Congrats," Blurr said.

"How wonderful you two are going to have a little nipper." Hightide said.

"I bet the baby will be cute," Dani said.

"The baby is going to have learn to deal with all of us," Kade said.

The people of Griffin Rock also found out about the baby. They were so happy for them. They began to plan for the baby. They were looking forward to the birth of the baby. Heatwave and Quickshadow were busy getting the nursery ready and planning everything else. They were hoping things were going to go well for their future baby.

They came to the doctor at the 20 week mark to make sure everything was going okay. The ultrasound tech was taking a look at the baby. "I see good looking back, feet, and hands, I see the lungs looking good and brain activity is great," the tech said. "I see the gender and I can see it is very obvious," she said.

"Well is it a boy or a girl?' Heatwave asked.

"Yes what is it?" Quickshadow asked.

"It's a boy," the tech said. Then the tech looked at the heart. "Hmm I see something, I will be right back," she said and left.

"I wonder what is going on," Quickshadow said.

"I wonder what it is," Heatwave said.

Then the doctor came into the room with another doctor. "Okay let's look at that baby," the doctor said. "I see there is something about the heart," he said.

Then the second doctor took a look. "I think we need you to see a fetal cardiologist because I think there is something wrong with the baby's heart," the second doctor said. "Go to Texas children's they are the best in country at looking after and taking care of little hearts," he said.

Heatwave and Quickshadow were nervous made an appointment. They were getting ready to go there via ground bridge. The Burns family noticed this and were wondering what was going on. "The doctor thinks something might be wrong with the baby's heart so we are going to Texas children's hospital in the pavilion for women to see if there is something wrong," Heatwave said.

"That sounds not good," Kade said.

"Well at least the hospital they are going to is the best for little hearts," Dani said.

So Heatwave and Quickshadow made it there and were waiting to be seen. They saw the doctor and they were a little bit nervous. "Okay now let's take look at the baby," the fetal cardiologist named Dr. Ansah said.

The ultrasound started and Dr. Ansah looked at the ultrasound. "Looks like there is a problem with the heart, like your oby-gen thought," Dr. Ansah said. "We will take a fetal echocardiogram  to be sure." she said.

Then the fetal echocardiogram started. Then once that was done they saw Dr. Ansah for the test results. "Your baby has double inlet left ventricle." Dr. Ansah said. "Which is a complex single ventricular defect and it is very rare one too." she said.

"Is it my fault?" Quickshadow asked.

"No Quickshadow it is not your fault, the cause for this defect is currently unknown," Dr. Ansah said. "So it happens for no reason," she said.

"Okay," Quickshadow said. "What can be done about this?" she asked.

"Your baby is going to need a lot of surgery and monitoring, and possible heart transplant sometime in childhood or when the child is an adult," Dr. Ansah said. "We will help you learn what you need to know about your son's defect, and we have single ventricle program for parents like you have have a child with a single ventricle defect." she said. "It will help you out with your son's condition and help you be ready to bring him in for emergency care if he needs it. There is another program we have you will be apart of have he has his third operation, kids with this type of defect normally have at least three surgeries in the first three to five years of life," she said. "But we will monitor him closely and watch if he needs anymore help," she said. "However as he grows his activities might be limited, if he doesn't do well with the surgeries or his body can't handle the blood flow change he will need a heart transplant to help him," she said. "That way he can live a more normal life but that is a last resort," she said. "But that is what the monitoring him at home is for and keeping an eye on him as he grows throughout childhood is all about to keep an eye on his heart," she said.

"We understand," Heatwave said. "Thank you so much," he said.

They learned about their sons defect and began to prepare to care for a baby with heart problems. The Burn's family, the Greene family, the rest of the team and all of Griffin Rock found out. They were stunned by it. "The doctors there are going to help our baby and help us learn about how to look after him and watch him," Quickshadow said. "They are going to help us in anyway that they can." she said.

"That's great," Dani said.

They had to wait till the baby was born before treatment could begin, hopefully everything was going to be okay.
