Chapter 16

Sebastian understood the pressure Darius and his family was going through. It was a low blow to involve Darius' son the future King into the quotation. Alexander and Rathgaurd were going to pay. It was just a tough call in Darius' behave, both the people he treasured the most were being threatened. Sebastian decided to take matters into his own hands. Everything was critical at this point but he was willing to compromise and get Deva back. He only knew of one other man that could get her out and would risk his life for it.

Sebastian took Izzy's hand and whispered her to follow him outside. No one noticed them leave.

"What?" She confusingly asked.

"I need you to take me to Adamarius' hideout."

She shook her head. "Why?"

Sebastian was annoyed with all the questions. They were running out of time. "Because he is the only one who could get her out. Darius can't think clearly with his son's life in the balance. I know it's eating him alive."

It was true and she knew it. Izzy contemplated the pros and cons but in the end nodded in agreement. Deva needed to get out. Her life was on the line.

"Alright follow me." Izzy led the way to lycan hideout where she had once spoken to Adamarius.

It was deep in the middle of the woods, tucked away from civilization. Once there Izzy noticed the slight difference in the location. Claw marked covering most of the walls; the aftermath of the Relic Moon. They ignored all the thwarting penetrating stares from the surrounding opposite species. Izzy entered the cave lair she was positive Adamarius was in.

She was right. Adamarius was hunched over a table while bandaging himself up.

"What are you doing here?" The guy Izzy tricked into taking her to the cave the first time stopped her.

"Adam we need your help," Izzy ignored Eric.

Adamarius groaned finishing off his wounds before raising his gaze to them. "What happened?"

"It's Deva. They took her. King Alexander took her." Izzy ranted.

Sebastian elaborated further. "They have surveillance footage with her leading a group of lycans to attack his kingdom."

"That's blasphemous. Deva was with me all night. She couldn't have possibly had time to attack anything." Adamarius roared.

"We believe you but they took her anyway. Darius has tried to reason with them but now they are threatening his son."

"They are cornering them, taking Darius' weaknesses away from him. King Alexander wants a war." Adamarius was seeing the picture clearly.

"Alexander will kill her. He wants the lycans to make the first move and we are positive they are armed and prepared this time."

Izzy kept her composure but inside she was beyond pandemonium. "You are the only one who could get her out. We know Darius will eventually give in but we want to make the decision before him. Adam please help us."

Adamarius nodded willfully and pulled on a shirt. "We don't know how much time we have."

Sebastian shook his head. "No but if I know anything about Rathgaurd then he won't wait long; tonight, even possibly."

"Then we go now." Adamarius headed for the exit not even caring if they were following him.

Adamarius hung by the chains grasped tightly around his wrists and upon his life's misfortune. All he had was time for the past five years rotting in his cell. It had been five years of torture replaying and thinking back to the time he had Deva in his reach, in his embrace. Things had gone so horribly wrong. Adamarius had wondered how things slipped out of his hands. He had everything planned. How could it have gone wrong?

Thoughts of escaping had occupied this mind often but he never had the strength to actually go through with it. The stone prison walls reminded him of the faults he had made. It was a reminder that Deva was not his and possibly never would be. He had his chance and he screwed up. It was a whirlwind of the unknown fate. Deva was meant to be his; there was no doubt about it. Darius had changed things. If she hadn't meant Darius Deva would be his right now.

Adamarius was starting to feel the effects of their separation. It was slowly and painfully deteriorating his energy, his life. Being away from Deva after sharing the bond with her was like tearing a part of his soul from his body. Life was gradually losing its meaning. Perhaps that was why he couldn't leave. His will to live and survive were nothing. Without Deva it meant nothing. Once he was out of his cell, what more was there? Deva didn't want him. It had been so long. Does she even remember his existence?

She had long ago turned off her connection with him like a light switch. He no longer felt her or could hear what she was thinking. It was a stabbing pain he couldn't get rid of or make fade away. It had been five years since he had seen her beautiful face or heard her sweet voice. His life was literally hanging on a thread.

The lock of the door opening forced him to break from his depressing thoughts. The clicks of feminine heels hitting the pavement made him look up curiously. It had felt like centuries since he had a female visitor. He wondered what the occasion was.

The stranger had a long hood covering her face but he didn't have to see her face to know who it was. He could feel a small part of himself finally being able to breathe again. Deva's simple presence was enough to make him feel whole again. But his eyes felt like they were deceiving him.

"Deva..." his voice was strained from years of silence.

She slowly raised her hands and pulled the hood off. She was more beautiful than he could remember. Her face was flawless yet somewhat distraught.

"Marius," she hesitated. Deva looked uncomfortable like she was questioning why she was there. "I shouldn't be here. I know I shouldn't be here." Her eyes shifted to the floor as she shuffled her feet nervously.

"Deva," Adamarius spoke gently. "Look at me."

She did as he said, no matter how much restraint she was trying to use.

"Why are you here?" He was relieved beyond belief that he could finally see her but something was off about her.

Her eyes got watery. "It was starting to burn...from the inside. I feel this tear inside my heart, inside my soul and it's getting harder and harder to seal up their deep wounds."

He understood the feeling far too clearly. "It's our bond. The longer we are apart the harder it gets to survive. We're meant to be together, stay together...forever."

She shook her head. "No, we can't. I can't. I love him." Deva broke down. "Darius is my husband. I could not live a life without him."

He wanted so badly to show her. "Deva unlock these chains." He rattled the shackles binding his wrists.

She stared into his deep sad haunted eyes. They had lost their fight and the glow she was so fond of and sometimes craved. Deva took pity on him and crushed the lock with her mind. It was a new ability she had developed in his absence, the ability to force and bend energy. Adamarius tossed the caged metals to the side and straightened out his aching muscles. Having her so close was making him lose his senses. Adamarius dismissed all doubts and closed the large gap separating them.

His arms wrapped around her like a blanket of warmth and sweet familiarity. She needed this moment just as much as he did. It was entirely strange and magical to feel this whole in each other's arms. She knew it was wrong, oh so wrong to feel like she needed him. Why couldn't her husband be enough?

In her vulnerable state Adamarius was finally able to read and feel her thoughts. She was feeling incredibly guilty and confused.

"He is not enough because we were linked at one point. In honesty Darius wasn't even supposed to exist in our destiny." Adamarius explained.

Deva's arms snaked around his torso because it felt like a perfect fit. The nausea and headaches were finally at a bearable minimum; barely a pinch or whisper.

Deva had denied the feeling for years that her willingness was slowly deteriorating. Darius could only distract her so much or make the hollow, empty part of her heart and soul full but it wasn't enough. She wept at the thought.

"It's because you fed me your blood? Because you turned me?" Deva mumbled into his chest helplessly.

Adamarius nodded and kissed her hair. The small gestured caused a jolt of electricity to run through her body.

"Yes," he replied. "My blood and your blood mixed together had connected us for life. We get weak when apart. I'm honestly surprised you survived this long. Darius has somehow sustained you."

He had. Darius was her life but time was taking its toll on her. She had hidden this pain from him for so long. She didn't want to confess to the love of her life that she was reluctantly losing her will for life. Her body was fading and tired of fighting.

"He was but I was starting to feel this pain, this burn, and realized I was dying. My body was shutting down." She tightened her hold on him. The strength they were recuperating was unethical. "He was beginning to see it too. He's afraid. That's why he didn't kill you. Darius was afraid killing you would eventually kill a part of me." She sobbed.

Adamarius lifted her into his arms and sat her down on his lap. He watched and comforted as she poured out her soul.

"It shouldn't have been like this. I should have taken you away before my brothers had a chance to even meet you. Now you are torn. We were always destined to be together. It was just an unimaginable fate that Darius entered your life."

Adamarius blamed himself. He had protectively watched over her before she was taken to the vampire world. If only he had been there and made her fall in love with him first. Now this misfortune was tearing her in two.

"I can't live without him but...but I can't live without you either. I need you both, like air to breathe." She couldn't let either of them go. She tried and couldn't survive it anymore. It was boiling in her blood, poison in her flesh. She needed Adamarius in her life.

He rubbed her back causing sparks to overwhelm them both. She was so consumed with her roller coaster of emotions that it was hard to even think.

"I'm so pathetically weak. I should be able to love my husband full heartedly. I'm useless and unworthy." She cried.

"No Deva. You are so strong. It's a curse we have to bear. Well it may be a curse for you but I would love you regardless. You are my everything." He kissed her shoulder this time, sending shivers down her spine.

"I can't do this anymore." She raised her head and surprised them both by crushing her lips to his.

It was a longing and yearning sensation that needed to be fulfilled. Both their bodies were starting to heal. It was a process that assured both of them survival and completeness.

"I'm a horrible person." Deva pushed herself back, ashamed. "Ahhh I want this. I want you but I know it's the biggest sin of my life. I can't cheat on him." She shook her head, fresh tears running down. "I can't hurt him."

"Shhhh," he soothed. "It's just your nature. Your lycan side reacting to mine." It shouldn't be a sin, he thought.

They belonged to each other. He hated how it was hurting her.

"Make it stop Marius. Please, make it stop. I don't want to have or feel these things for you. Please." Her desperate pleas were taunting echoes in his ears.

He wanted her but it was all wrong. It was a forbidden love now and there was nothing he could do about it. Adamarius thought of the possibility of erasing Darius from her mind and ultimately her memory. He could persuade her to forget all about her beloved husband and just runaway with her. After all they did belong together. Things would be so easy for her. She would never have to choose sides or feel guilty. They could finally be together like they were meant to be without Darius even in mind.

But that's when Adamarius heard the faint humming of another heartbeat. It was as if his ears were playing a cruel trick on him. He placed his hand over her stomach and anticipated the possibility. Could it be true?

"You're pregnant?" He questioned.

Deva bit her lip and nodded. Adamarius' body rocked with jealous. It should have been his child she was carrying. It was supposed to be theirs, not Darius'.

"It's funny how life can be so cruel, how destiny might possibly not come true. It's a sick twisted journey to choosing or falling across the path set out in front of us." Adamarius mumbled. She was his destiny.

"Maybe you're right. If I hadn't met Darius you and I would have a wonderful life together. It just happened thou. We can't change the past. And now..." She placed her hand over her stomach. "And now I'm stuck between what my heart wants and what my soul needs."

Adamarius shut his eyes and softly shed a few tears for what could have been. "It's a boy."

"How do you know?"

"I just do." It was a strange feeling but he knew.

He couldn't take her away now. She would never forgive him. Adamarius needed to put his selfish tendencies aside and do what was best for her and the baby.

"I don't know if it will work but I will try to make it stop." He could tap into her brain and force her feelings for him to disappear. It was hard to predict if it would even work. Their connection was far too strong to comprehend. There was no guarantees but it was worth a shot.

He would ease her pain and make it more tolerable for her to bear. Darius again would replace him but so would the baby. Her hold and pull towards Adamarius would fade but he would still bear the scars of the loss of her.

"Your pain will subdue and you will no longer need me. You will have the comfort of your husband's embrace and the joy of your child to keep from remembering me. I will be but a distant memory and you won't even remember coming here." It pained him to let her go but he knew it was for the best.
