Ch. 2 - Deep Within The Dragon's Den

The sun shined brightly through the dining room windows as the muffled sound of the streets filled the air.

As you took a sip of your morning tea, your eyes couldn't help but wander to several different locations on the sprawled-out map in front of you.

The map was very detailed. It not only had a full layout of the kingdom, but it also had marked territories that were claimed by others. One of them being named "Dragon's Den" and another labeled "Forbidden Plains."

To your surprise, you appeared to be resting in the kingdom's capital which occupied the eastern border. Did you really travel that far in just a few days? Now that you think about it, the only breaks you took were to sleep or eat.

As you continued to look over the map your eyes couldn't help but wander at the distinctive name that couldn't escape your mind. Dragons.

The unknown species you've been dying to know about resides just a couple feet away from the capital's walls. You didn't know whether to be excited or worried over the fact.

Speaking of species, you shifted your gaze towards the journal. If you wanted to learn about them, now was the perfect time.

You opened the journal and began reading the contents inside. The notes were scribbled down in a messy cursive font, but it was still eligible.

The notes described not only their appearances but what forms they took, where they're usually spotted, and the designs of their cultured clothing. However, your eyes couldn't help but spot a scribbled down message that was even messier than the writing before.

'If you spot a dragon, leave. Leave before their king can find you...'

Curiosity began to grow more in your mind as you pondered what you just read. You have never heard anything about a supposed "King of The Dragons", but then again you've never really learned anything about their kind. Now that you think about it, the bookkeeper never said anything about a ruler either.

"Maybe I should go check it out..." You muttered leaning back in your chair.

As fast as the thought came, you quickly shook your head trying to rid yourself of the stupid idea. You have just come into town and know nothing about these creatures nor the area surrounding them.

Everything you've heard so far has implied that they are a dangerous race that shouldn't be trifled with and going into their territory is a death sentence.

You took a deep breath before grabbing your bag and heading out into town. You thought that the least you could do is go around and ask questions to satisfy the curious feeling growing in your chest.

However, as you ask around the townspeople only gave you anxious glares and shook their heads at your questions. Either they didn't know anything, or they were too scared to even talk about the subject. Whatever the case was, you were getting nowhere.

After what felt like forever, you sat down on a nearby bench to catch your breath.

"Is it really so hard to get a simple answer?" You mumbled in frustration as you crossed your arms. "I mean it's just a race. What could possibly happen by answering just a few simple questions?"

You let out another huff as you rested your head against the back of the bench which wasn't as comfortable as you thought it to be.

So many questions were flowing through your head, but you couldn't find answers to any of them. Why?

"Um, excuse me?" A soft-spoken voice broke you out of your thoughts.

You lifted your head up to be greeted by a green curly haired boy. He wore a light green vest with a white collared shirt underneath, along with a pair of flashy red shoes. Attached to his waist was a belt that held a sheathed sword and a small pouch.

"Sorry to bother you, but you looked a little down. I was wondering if I could help?"

You couldn't help but stare at the sudden stranger in front of you. Is it normal for strangers to confront each other like this. Then again it might just be a custom you don't know about.

After a moment of awkward silence, the boy spoke up once more. "U-uh, sorry! It's probably weird having a total stranger approach you like this."

Okay, maybe it's not a custom.

He extended his hand forward giving you a warm smile. "My name is Izuku Midoriya, but my friends call me Deku!"

A similar smile appeared on your face as you took his hand. "And I'm (Y/N) (L/N)! Sorry for the awkward staring, I was just caught off guard is all."

"It's alright!" He reassured you before sitting next down. "I should've been more considerate."

Delay rubbed the back of his head, but as he did so you couldn't help but recall the questions from before. It was now or never.

"Um, would you happen to know anything about dragons?"

Deku's once sincere gaze now looked at you with a blank and shocked stare. Perhaps you were a little too straightforward.

"I mean-!" You stuttered trying to gain your composure. "I've never heard of them before, and well...I wanted to learn about their kind!"

There was another awkward moment of silence before his normal smile appeared again. "Yeah, I do!" He nodded. "A couple friends of mine would explore their territory, but that was before it became dangerous."

"What do you mean dangerous?" You asked.

The green-haired boy took a moment to contemplate his answer before turning his body towards you. "Well, dragons and human's used to get along just fine till...well..."

His gaze soon dropped to the ground. His once cheery eyes were now filled with slight sorrow. "Let's just say that both races started attacking each other for separate reasons."

You stared at him with confusion as he began to get up. "I think it's best if you don't get involved with them though . We don't want anymore situations like before."

As he turned towards you, you couldn't help but be slightly confused about what he said. "Welp I'll see around (Y/N)!"

"Yeah...see ya!"As you waved him goodbye, you couldn't help but feel uneasy. However, the frustration you feel was way stronger.

The whole day so far, you've received nothing but slight nods and vague statements. At this point, you were ready to get the answers yourself.

As if on cue, you felt something wrap around your face. You panicked a little as you tore whatever it was off, but to your relief it was nothing serious. In your hand was a wrinkled piece of paper with bold letters reading 'HELP WANTED'.

You began to scan through the poster seeing what it was about.

'HELP WANTED! Help defend our town against the dragon's evil!'

You sat there for a moment before grabbing your bag and bolting back towards the inn. As much as you didn't want to listen to your reckless side, it was right for once.

If you wanted answers you had to get them yourself, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The air filled your lungs as you took a deep breath. Your hands began to shake as you grasped onto the strap of your satchel.
You knew you were reckless, but not this stupid. There were plenty of easier ways to get the information you wanted, but for some reason you decided to go with the most dangerous one.
You breathed in deeply once more as you started to approach a large group of people. Here goes nothing.
You slid the hood on your cloak over your head before walking over to where everyone was gathered. As you got closer, you began to see different people wearing armor and carrying their own weapons.
As you got closer you felt the anxiety in you begin to grow more and more. "Alright (Y/N), just breath."
You took another deep breath in before taking a small step back. As you did so, you suddenly felt a force push you slightly forward again.
"Whoa! Sorry about that!"
You turned around, clenching the bag's strap even tighter. "No, it's fine!"
As you looked up, you were met with a guy that had blonde hair with a black lightning bolt on the side of his hair.
"Are you sure? You seemed a little skittish?" He had a slight smirk on his face as he raised an eyebrow at you.
"Skittish? Me? No, not at all!" You tried to hide your anxiousness as you let out a small chuckle. "I've just never done something like this before!"
"Ah, a first-timer! Don't worry it's my first time doing something like this too!" You could tell that he was trying to comfort you with his smile, which did help a bit.
Your head perked up at his remark. "Really?"
"Yeah!" He replied. "I've never fought against a dragon before, so I guess we'll be learning together! Oh, I'm Denki Kaminari by the way."
"(Y/N) (L/N)." You gave him a slight smile trying to hide your nervousness.
"Don't worry then (Y/N)! We'll fight together!"
You nodded at his statement. His words made you feel a little bit better, but then again you weren't there to fight to begin with.
A sudden clap filled the air as everyone went silent from the noise. As you both turned your gaze to the sudden interruption, you were greeted with an armored man with dark blue hair and glasses.
"Now everyone, I would like to thank you all for volunteering to protect our fine young nation against the dragon's clutches. Our goal today is not to defeat the dragon's, but merely push them farther away from the border. We fight as not only one person, but as one team! Now everyone get into your groups and lets head out!"
Everyone cheered at his brief speech before separating into what seemed to be four large squads.
"(Y/N), over here! You can be with me!" Kaminari shouted motioning you to come over.
You did as he requested, following him alongside the group of people. As you all made your way past the walls and into the forest, the pit in your stomach started to become more noticeable the farther away the town became.
Every once in awhile you would take a huge deep breath in to try and calm your nerves, but it was no use. The pit in your stomach just kept growing.
After a couple of minutes, you found yourself deep within the forest surrounded by nature's presence. Some of the trees around you had small, beautiful flowers blossoming from them. As you looked up, small chunks of land were floating in the sky. They almost looked like islands.
"So, why did you decide to come and fight?" Kaminari asked before putting his hands behind his head.
"Well..."
Why did you decide to come here? Was your curiosity that significant that you decided to risk your life for some answers? You knew nothing about their kind, yet you decided to play as a fighter for hire to get the answers you wanted. Sometimes you wish that your parents gave you some sort of limit to your curiousness.
"Let's just say I'm here for personal reasons." You simply smiled before turning your gaze back in front of you. "What about you?"
The blonde let out a superior chuckle before smirking to himself. "I'm here for some adventure! It gets boring fighting low level monsters all day. I wanted a challenge!"
Kaminari seemed excited at his idea, however you couldn't help but glare at him. There was a big gap between low level monsters and a dragons, but you decided to keep that information to yourself.
Without any warning, one of the leading guards held up their hand causing everyone to stop in their tracks. "Someone's here."
Everyone tensed up at the statement before pulling out their weapons. Your body stiffened before slowly pulling out a small dagger you brought with you. You only used it for gathering herbs, but it's better than nothing.
"You brought a dagger to a dragon fight?!" Kaminari whispered.
"It's the only weapon I had!" You glared at him as you held the blade in front of you.
"Have you never fought before?" He glared at you with a hint of worry.
"Well..."
It didn't take long before the blonde got a hint of your situation. "You got to be kidding me..."
Suddenly, a roar filled the air which caused you to jump. In a matter of mere seconds, several dragons appeared all around the group. You stared in awe and fear at the sight. You have never seen a dragon up close before and at this moment you didn't know if you wanted to.
"Attack!"
Before you knew it, each person bolted towards a different dragon; however, a certain electric blond grabbed your wrist and pulled you into the forest. You both began running in the opposite direction of the group, his grip becoming tighter the farther you became.
"Kaminari wait!"
"No way! You really think it's a good idea to fight? I mean look at your weapon!" His voice was filled with panic.
"That's not it!" You pulled on his arm which caused him to stop in his tracks. "Look..."
You pointed beside you to see a red scaled dragon with glowing golden eyes lurking in the depths of the forest. You both froze in fear at the sight. The two of you had no idea what to do, but you knew for sure that you had to leave. As you stood there, a sudden thought popped in your head.
"Kaminari." You whispered. "Walk back to the group and tell them that they need to leave."
"What?" His tone was shaky as he kept his eyes on the dragon in front of you both. "Why?"
"Trust me!" You whispered harshly before glaring at him. "Walk slowly back to the others and don't make eye contact with any dragon you come across."
He nodded hesitantly. "What about you?"
"I'll be fine. I know enough information about them to get back to town."
As much as he didn't want to leave you, he did as he was told. As Kaminari slowly began walking back the way you came, you stood still eyeing the dragon. You remember some of the vague notes in the small leather journal you read earlier that day, but it never really told you how to deal with a dragon up close. Even with little information you couldn't just stand there.
Very slowly you began to walk in the direction of town, however it only took a few steps before you heard the crimson dragon's outcry.
"That's it, screw the notes!" At full speed, you began to sprint through the forest. With every step you made, you heard the faint flapping of wings behind you.
Your heart was racing, and tears were forming in the corner of your eyes from the terror growing inside of you.
As you made your way aimlessly throughout the forest, you suddenly felt the ground disappear beneath your feet. You began to tumble down a steep hill the feeling of sharp pain growing throughout your body. After a few seconds, the world around you stopped spinning as you laid down in agony.
A groan escaped your lips as you sat up. Without the slightest moment of relief, you turned your head towards the sudden sound of a wrestling bush somewhere in front of you.
"W-who's there?" At this point you were shaking in fear. You had no idea what you got yourself into and right now the only thing you wanted to do was go home.
The air remained still as you examined the trees around you. In an instant, a sudden golden light appeared below you. You shielded your eyes as you looked down to find yourself sitting in the middle of circle. It had several unfamiliar marks around it but you knew instantly what this symbolized. A magic circle.
The light around you became bright as you sat there in a frozen panic. As the light began to grown brighter, the beautiful forest scenery around you became a dark abyss.
As quick as it came, the darkness around you began to shift into some sort of room. As the void completely vanished, you found yourself in a great hall filled with torches and crimson carpet. Ahead of you was two staircases that lead to the second floor that overlooked the hall, but that isn't what caught your eye.
In the center of the room was a throne fit for a king. That's when it hit you. You were in the heart of the dragon's den.
"Well, what do we have here?"A booming voice caused your attention to turn in front of you. "An extra who thinks they can take me on?"
Standing on the second floor balcony was a figure that seemed to be looking directly at you. "Pathetic."
Your mind began to race as your eyes became glued onto him. It can't be.
Unexpectedly, the man jumped down from the second story without a care in the world. You jumped back a bit as the man's features became more noticeable.
An ash-blonde male with a pair of crimson-colored eyes glared at you with a sadistic grin. Hanging from his shoulders is a cloak that was the same color as his eyes.
Your body tensed up as the man began to walk towards you. "A weakling like you won't even stand a chance against me."
As he got closer your eyes shifted to a mahogany colored crown that rested on the top of his head. The crown had small spikes going all around the crown that looked like thorns.
The ash-blonde stopped directly in front of your frozen form. He glared down at you which made your body shudder at the sight. "If you have a death wish you might as well feed yourself to the dogs."
In that moment, you realized that you were deep into the dragon's den and there would be no escape.
