Jerry

Avelina would spend the rest of her day in her room reading through some books that Alexander gifted to her. It was an apology gift since Alexander could not take her out for Ice cream. "Sorry, Avelina, something has come up. We'll have to go another time. But here! I found some books for you to read!" Avelina remembered. One of the books that Alexander gave her was about Smithing ores and their many uses. Avelina didn't know much about smithing, nor was she interested much, but she found it a fascinating read. Avelina began to wonder about the colossal sword that Alexander wields, was it made by one of those ores she read about? From what the book said, some smithing ores even had magical properties. As Avelina places the book down, she lays back on her pillow and stares at the ceiling. Avelina would begin to think about the test and the Demon she had to retrieve. She giggled, remembering their conversation as they made their way back up from hell. Avelina began to wonder what those other demons meant by "Princess Duty."

As Avelina was about to drift off to sleep, she snapped out of the attempt when she heard yelling echoing from down the halls. Avelina got out of bed and walked down the halls to the source. The yelling was getting louder till she peaked her head around the corner. Becky, Cloyd, and Jerry were all in the main room, and a broken vase lay on the stone floor. "You are such a clutz! That is the third vase you broke today! Can you not hold onto anything properly?!" screamed Becky. Jerry just stood there twiddling his thumbs, looking scared and sad. Avelina had forgotten how scary her aunt Becky could be. Avelina herself had never been yelled at like that before. She would only be yelled at if she was doing something like climbing on a chandelier or a risky flip off a ledge.

"Go to the jerry box!" Becky ordered. "NOW!"

Jerry flinched at her last word and hurried to the exit where Avelina was. Avelina quickly hid by the piece of armor that was in the hallway as Jerry passed her. Avelina stepped out from behind the armor and looked back into the room. Both Cloyd and Becky were cleaning up the mess that Jerry had made.

"Honestly, why do we keep him around?" said Becky irritably.

Cloyd would reply. "Well, Becky, we can't just kick him out. He is our youngest brother, after all. And besides, you know he can't survive on his own." He said as he placed the broken shards of the vase in the trash.

"I know," said Becky, sounding as though she hated to admit it was true. "He's just so damn useless!"

Aunt Becky seemed to be in a bad mood today, Avelina thought. She'd always get angry at Jerry, but she'd never heard her talk this nasty about him. Becky continued on her rant. "He'd be easier to have around if we didn't test the crown on him." She said as she placed the broom away.

"Crown?" Avelina whispered, confused.

"That was a horrible mistake," Cloyd said, nodding in agreement.

"Well, we had to test and see if it would work," said Becky. "It could've been worse. He could've died."

Avelina gasped loudly. Becky and Cloyd looked over to where she was hiding. They looked at each other and then walked to the room's entrance. Avelina hurried from around the knight's armor and hid in a nearby room. Avelina could hear Cloyd saying, "I could've sworn I heard someone...." As they walked back into the room. Avelina peaks open the door to check if Becky and Cloyd are gone. She leaves the room and hurries off as soon as she sees they are gone.

That whole conversation between her aunt and uncle didn't sit right with Avelina. Just what in the world did they mean about a crown? And did they not care if Jerry died? She was used to them saying rude things about him here and there, but that was cruel. And this talk about a crown. Whatever it was...it made jerry act like a child. Avelina had thought that that was how jerry always acted, but to think he was never like that at first. So many questions began to fill Avelina's head. A demon from hell, a crown that could kill someone or turn them into a grown child...none of this was making any sense.

As Avelina strolled down the halls of the palace, she could hear the sounds of someone making weird noises coming from another room. The sound was bouncing off the walls Avelina followed it. As she got closer, she began to recognize who that voice was. It was jerry. The voice was coming from a room to the right of her. The room's door opened slightly enough as to where she could hear Jerry's voice, and she walked over to open it. There she saw Jerry walking around in a circle, singing the usual song of him going "Ooooowoooooowooo!" repeatedly.

"Jerry?" said Avelina.

Jerry stops singing, yelps and turns around to face her. "O-Oh! A-Avelina! Jerry   thought you was Becky! I thought I was going to get yelled at again...." He said timidly.

"I'm not going to yell at you, Uncle Jerry," She reassured as she stepped into the room. Avelina began to realize where she was. Avelina was in the room where there were paintings of past generations of her family. She had only been in here once in her life when she followed Alexnader in here, but she never gave a good look at any of them. She would place her eyes back on Jerry and say, "I overheard you getting yelled at by Aunt Becky... I thought I'd come and check on you."

Jerry smiled slightly. "Aww...uh...thank you, Avelina. I'm fine," He said quietly as he twiddled his thumbs. "I'm used to being yelled at."

Avelina frowned. "I think she went too far this time. I've never heard her that angry before. I could hear her yelling from my room. She seemed like she was in a bad mood today,"

"Oh. I think Becky is mad at Alexander. They were supposed to go on a date today after he was supposed to take you out for Ice cream," said Jerry.

"Oh," Avelina rubs her arm gently. "I guess I wasn't the only one he canceled on..."

Jerry nodded as he looked down at his toes. He began to chuckle playfully as he wiggled them. This made Avelina giggle a bit as she watched Jerry. Avelina would then ask, "So...you like to sing, huh?"

Jerry would look away from his toes and place his eyes on Avelina. A big smile grew on his face. "YES, I DO! It's what helps me feel better when I get sad!" Jerry took a big breath and-"OOOOOOWOOOOWOOO! OOOOOWOOOWOOO!"

Avelina would start to giggle more. That's when Avelina decided to join in and started singing the same song as Jerry. The two of them sang for a few minutes before Avelina stopped. "OK, we should stop before Aunt Becky finds us!"

"OK!" Jerry said, nodding happily.

Avelina would then turn her attention to one of the paintings. She laid her eyes on the first one that she saw. It was a family painting, the mother and father watching their son sit on a horse, wearing...a crown. Was that the crown that Cloyd and Becky were talking about? As her eyes began to go from painting to painting, she began to notice other decedents and family members had worn this crown before. There was a even a newborn baby sitting inside the crown...

"Hey, uncle jerry..." said  Avelina

"Yes, Avelina?"

"Why are a few people wearing a crown in the paintings?" Avelina asked as she pointed to one of them.

That's when Jerry froze. His happy cheery attitude was quickly replaced with fear. Jerry began to mumble under his breath. Avelina noticed this and asked, "Umm...are you OK?"

"I...I...umm...I...I can't...."

"Jerry?"

"I can't say, I can't say, I'm not supposed to say anything, no no no no..."

"J-Jerry, what's wrong?" Avelina asked.

"I-I have to go!" Jerry said as he turned around and hurried out of the room.

Avelina was now left alone in the room full of paintings. She began to feel uncomfortable in this room and decided to go herself and head back to her room. Once in her room, she lay on her bed and began to take everything in. Everyone in the family had worn the crown her aunt and uncle were talking about. Just what is this crown? And more importantly...if everyone in the family had worn it at some point...shouldn't jerry be ok and not hurt?

Avelina had a hard time falling asleep...she couldn't help but see the eyes of her ancestors stare t her as she drifted off.
