"strawberry or chocolate?" asked luke, his head behind the freezer door. "you know what, i'll just bring both."

"aw, lukey, you know me so well!" cooed sam from where she was swaddled in blankets on her best friends couch. she sat up as luke came closer and handed her the chocolate tub along with a spoon, to which she dug into happily.

the two continued to eat in silence, their eyes watching the tv in front of them. when the show skipped to a commercial, sam turned to look at luke who had strawberry ice cream on the corner of his mouth. her ponytail swung around while she giggled and pointed it out, making luke roll his eyes and wipe his mouth with the back of his hand. "so!" sam said, scooping another spoonful of chocolate ice cream.

"so," copied luke, sitting up straighter and raising his eyebrows.

"i wanna talk, luke." she said seriously. luke's smile fell from his face, now nervous as to what she had to say. "you and ashton, huh?"

a blush crept its way up to luke's cheeks. "yeah, what about it?"

"are you guys, like... together?" sam pressed, sticking her spoon into the frozen treat and letting it stay there.

luke shifted underneath the blanket they shared, pushing away his food. he no longer felt like eating. "i don't know, sammy, i guess so?" he responded, confusion clear in his voice.

"what do you mean you guess so, luke? you either know or you don't," she chuckled, combing her fingers through her hair now that she had removed the elastic from it.

"well, i could say the same for you and michael." luke countered, an easy smile on his lips. "i just, i dunno... we kiss a lot, which i don't mind, but i don't wanna play around, you know?"

sam nodded, understanding completely. it was how she felt with michael right now. "yeah, i understand. but he seems to really care about you, luke."

"how do you know?"

"don't think i didn't see him kiss your cheek, lucas." sam told him, a smug grin on her face. "he really does."

"i really care about him, too, sammy." luke whispered, holding his head in his hands. "and i'm so scared."

sam's eyebrows pinched together in confusion. she moved closer to the blonde, rubbing his back comfortingly. "why?" she asked softly, her tone full of worry.

"my parents, sammy... you know how they are."

"luke, they're the most understanding people i know. they'll support you no matter who you choose to love."

"no, it's not that i'm... gay..." luke said slowly, testing the word on his tongue. it was the first time he ever put a label on it. "it's that, well, they-- they, uh--" he stammered, running a hand through his flattened hair as he tried to figure out what he wanted to say. "you know how much they love you, right?"

"mmhmm..." sam nodded, trying to follow where luke was going.

"well, i guess what i'm trying to say is that, they're still, like, hoping we'll get back together? they talk about it all the time, and it's so hard to not be like, 'hey mom, hey dad, i really like boys. see you after school!' because i don't want to hurt their feelings or something."

sam cracked a smile. "luke, you know i love you, but not in that way. we tried it once, you know that, i know that -- they know that, and they know it didn't work out. it's been a year, and if we were ever going to do something about it, it would have been done already." she explained easily, shrugging her shoulders. "you and i both know why we broke up. there's nothing we can do about it now."

"we broke up 'cause we both like to suck dick, sammy," luke pointed out, making sam giggle beside him. his tone then went from playful to vulnerable in a matter of seconds. "i'm just scared, really. i've heard so many stories of people not being accepted because of who they love, and i don't wanna be one of them. kids get kicked out of their homes, sam, cut off from family because of stuff like this!" he babbled, palms becoming sweaty the more he thought about the idea of coming out.

"you know what you should do? when your mom comes home, you should hide upstairs, and when she asks where you are, you tell her that you're in the closet." suggested sam, laughing at her own idea.

"yeah, like that'll work." he nudged his shoulder with hers playfully, staring blankly at the floor. "i just don't know, sam. i want to be with ashton, like, really bad, but i don't know if my parents will approve of it."

"who cares if they approve, it's your relationship, not theirs." scoffed sam, settling back into the couch cushions. "if you want to be with ashton, then be with ashton."

luke sighed heavily. "if only it was that easy."

"so, how did you and ashton actually meet? he didn't sound so sure when i asked who he was the other day."

"oh, no, we actually are lab partners. that part was true. i guess he just didn't know what to say we were because we've never really talked about it. i'm going to tonight though. i might even ask him out..." luke trailed off, getting off the couch so sam couldn't jump on him out of excitement.

"aw, luke! really? oh my gosh, that'd be so cute, please do it! you better call me right afterwards!" sam ordered, following her friend into the kitchen where he put away the ice cream and rinsed their spoons.

"you didn't tell me about michael sucking on your neck!" luke shot back, laughter falling from his mouth. "why should i tell you about ashton and i?"

"fine," sam laughed along with him, letting her hands slap against her sides. "what do you want to know about it?"

"is he a good kisser?" luke asked casually, perching himself on the kitchen counter.

"oh my god, yes, it makes me want to cry," sam gushed, a lazy smile on her lips. "he's just so gentle but kinda rough--"

luke clapped his hands over his ears, screwing his eyes shut tight. "okay, i take it back, i don't care!" he told sam, even though he was smiling too. "do you think he's going to ask you out soon?" he smirked upon the words leaving his mouth.

sam chewed on her bottom lip, unsure of how to answer. "i don't know, i hope so. we have that whole bet thing going still, actually. i'm so close to calling it off though, i'm done with eating pizza for the rest of my life."

"or maybe you just want to date michael?" luke suggested with a smirk, knowing he hit the nail right on the head. "just tell him you don't want to do it anymore."

"then he'll try harder because he still didn't make the perfect damn pizza. if i eat pizza one more time, i might just throw up everywhere, i swear." sam mumbled, running a hand through her tangled waves. her phone then began to vibrate in her pocket, and she ignored it, thinking it was just a text message from her mom again. but when it kept vibrating, she realized it was a call and fished it out of her pocket to see who was trying to reach her. "it's michael?"

"answer it!" hissed luke, a smile growing on his face. he was in on this, knowing exactly what was going to happen later. sam put her hand on his face to make him be quiet while she pressed the green 'answer' button.

"hello?" sam said into the receiver, wondering why michael was calling her at 9 pm. luke moved so his ear was next to the back of her phone, trying to listen in on their conversation.

"hi, sam!" the familiar voice greeted, making a smile paint sam's lips.

she pushed luke back with her foot so he wouldn't continue to eavesdrop. "hey, michael. what's up?"

there was some fumbling on the other line and then the sound of a door slamming. "i actually have something really important i need to talk to you about, can you come see me?"

"uh, i don't know, i'm over at luke's right now and i didn't drive my car." sam frowned because she knew she really wanted to see michael but she also didn't want to ditch her best friend. "i'm sorry."

michael groaned on the other end. "but baby," he whined, making sam's heart race at the term of endearment. "please?" he pressed, dragging out the word cutely.

"hold on, let me ask lu--"

"yes, i'll drive you!" luke answered quickly, making sam roll her eyes.

"well, i guess i'm coming to see you."

"sweet! i'll see you in a bit, babe." michael laughed before hanging up. by the time sam had locked her own phone and tucked it back into her sweatpants pocket, luke was already jamming his feet into a pair of tennis shoes, keys in hand.

"let's go!" he said, bouncing on the balls of his feet while sam zipped up her boots and threw a hoodie on. "go go go go go," luke chanted, his hand on the small of sam's back  as he led her to his car. once they were both in their seats, luke turned to look at her with a blank expression. "wait, where are we going exactly?"

sam rolled her eyes and shrugged. "uh, michael's i guess?"

luke drove sam there (after she asked michael for his address), letting her out of the car with a huge grin on his face. "text me tomorrow!" he called after her, wiggling his eyebrows and watching as sam exited the car and entered michael's house.
