chptr 1

"mom, what's for dinner?" sam asked as she strode down the stairs, flicking her dark hair out of her face. "i'm starving."

her mother looked up from where she was cutting out coupon after coupon. "dinner is whatever you find, honey."

"mom," sam whined, a pout upon her face. "come on, seriously? you tell me that at least three times a week. pizza rolls ain't cutting it. i'm a growing girl, i need food!"

"well since you like pizza rolls so much, why don't you go order a pizza?" ruth suggested, adjusting the glasses perched on her nose. "get some money out of my purse, get two pepperonis so we can each have one."

sam's face lit up. "alright!" she chirped, grabbing $30 out of her mom's wallet and happily going back to her room to dial the number to dominoes.

she pressed the phone to her ear, hearing nothing but ringing for a couple seconds before a perky male voice answered on the other line. "domino's pizza, what would you like today?"

sam smiled even though the person couldn't see her. "hi, yes, i would like two large pepperoni pizzas for sam hodgens. "

she heard the phone go fuzzy for a second and some fumbling around before the clear voice cut through the silence. "oh, great, we already have your address on file! alright ma'am, that will be getting to you shortly."

"sweet, thanks! bye, i love you!" sam said before she realizing what she was saying.

"i love you too!" said the man without missing a beat.

sam felt all blood drain from her face when she processed what she said. she was very glad that the other person couldn't see her at the moment, otherwise they'd think she had seen a ghost.

after a moment of silence, the man cleared his throat awkwardly and sam started to apologize profusely. "oh my god, i'm so sorry, jesus christ, i didn't mean to say that. it's just a habit, you know? yeah, i just -- i'm really sorry, like, really sorry."

the person on the other line laughed. "it's okay, calm down. your order will be getting to you in about 20 minutes. see you then."

"right. bye." sam said quickly, hanging up before they could respond. she threw her phone on her bed and smacked her forehead, completely embarrassed. "i swear, i'm so stupid sometimes..." she grumbled to herself, tucking her mother's money in the pocket of her jeans and going to wait in the living room, hoping that the delivery person wouldn't be the same person as the one on the phone.
