Chapter 5:

In the morning when I woke up I remembered Beth saying something about massages and knowing a massage would do me good I got ready and knocked on Beth’s door.

She opened with a white sheet around her body instead of clothes.

“You and Jason had fun then?” I asked raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah,” she admitted with a blush. “Why are you here?”

“Massages, you said you booked one yesterday for us…”

“Oh right, um, can we reschedule? Jason is sore from the plane ride and I thought he could use a massage,” Beth said.

“The plane ride isn’t all he’s sore from,” I muttered.

“Are you angry?” Beth asked worriedly. “I can always go again with Jason tomorrow.”

“No, no don’t worry about it. I’ll find something to do,” I muttered. “Have fun.”

“Daisy,” she said unsurely and I put on a fake smile. It was funny how naturally it came to me but it made sense that it did. I’d been doing it my whole life.

“I’m fine. I didn’t want to go for a stupid massage anyway. You go have fun with Jason.”

“You’re the best,” she squealed. “Thank you!”

I said bye and she closed the door and I sighed. There goes the massage that was meant to do me good. Nevertheless I walked down the pier towards the lobby. I walked up to the receptionist desk and snapped my fingers at the lady.

“Hey, hi,” I said. “Does this resort have like a pub or something?”

“There’s a bar and grill down at Pier One.”

“Great, that means I have to walk,” I muttered.

I walked away and started trekking towards Pier one which was right on the other end of the resort. The sun was beating down on my back and I was starting to heat up. So I placed my bag on the floor and pulled my shirt off so I was just in shorts and my bikini. I shoved my shirt into my bag and tied up my hair into a low bun.

I finally made it to the bar and grill and took a seat at the bar.

            “What can I get you?”

“I’ll have a shot of vodka. Make it two,” I said and I slumped across the bar. The bartender had two shots of vodka on the table in a matter of seconds and I downed them easily. “Another two.”

The bartender didn’t say anything and refilled my shot glasses. I downed them as easily as the first two and sighed.

“You know, I can afford all this nice stuff and people wish they were me but I hate my life,” I said to the bartender. “Give me another two, wait can you just give me the bottle?”

“Go for it,” he said and handed me a bottle.

I took a swig and looked at the pitied look the bartender gave me. “You probably don’t see a lot of people like me and you’re probably thinking what does she have to whine about? The famous, desirable Daisy Daniels. The person everyone wants to be. Biggest joke I’ve heard of. My life is miserable.”

“Being famous wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be?” the bartender asked me.

“I didn’t want it in the first place,” I said and I took another swig of vodka. “My parents forced me to. They said either start making something of your life or get gone. And I would’ve gone if it wasn’t for Noah.”

            “Who’s that?”

“He’s my little brother. He’s eight and my parents aren’t very nice people and I couldn’t leave him all alone. He doesn’t deserve that. No one deserves that. So I signed on with a record deal and made an album. I wrote all of my songs back then. I still had optimism and somehow it ended up becoming number one in over twenty countries including the US and the UK. I toured for a year with countless big time artists. Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Eminem, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Katy Perry, I think that’s all of them. It gets a little hazy. But that was 2009. I was sixteen and people loved me. I have this theory that if you get a young girl singing about high school puppy love they get famous. Look at Taylor Swift and me. Only difference between her and me is that I hate all that lovey dovey crap now. I’d rather sing about how much life sucks but my management is difficult. Anyways where was I? So I finished touring with all these amazing artists and then I went on a small theatre tour around the US, that was in 2010. The same year I won my first Grammy for best female break out artist.

“At the end of 2010, I brought out my second album. This album was a lot more depressing than my first one and a lot less relatable for young girls so it didn’t sell as much but I still did a small tour around the US and the UK and Asia.

“2012 came and that was album number three. I was back to love songs and pop songs and it broke records that album. Proud to say I wrote or co-wrote all of the songs because as long as it was happy and pop management couldn’t care less. It was called Serendipity that was the only song I really loved on the album so that’s what I called it. It won me countless awards. I can’t even remember how many. Though it wasn’t my favourite album, I am proud of it. I headlined a tour for almost a year and a half. Performed all over America, Canada, the UK and Germany, Australia, Asia. So many places in just a year and a half. I only saw my brother twice that year. He didn’t understand though he was only four at the time.”

“By 2014 my album Chains was out and like my third album it won me many awards and I got to go on a headlining stadium tour. Sold out every concert. Had four legs. America, Europe, Asia and Australia and New Zealand. I begged my parents to let my brother come with me but they wouldn’t have it and that’s that.

“You’re probably wondering why I don’t look like the girl in the magazines. It’s all fake which brings me to my three month hiatus. I was becoming … a handful so my manager, her name’s Amber and a pain in my arse. But she suggested I take three months off and then as soon as the three months is up we release my next album. It needs to be released by November fifteenth. I have three months to put a whole album together. That’s going to be a pain.”

            “You have an interesting story.”

“It’s anything but interesting. I got famous and I didn’t want it. It’s anything but interesting. It’s tragic.”

I heard a loud fuss being made by the door and I turned to see Liam walking in with people I recognised but didn’t know. Liam was with three of his band mates Harry, Niall and Louis and three girls. One was Jade from that British girl band, Little Mix and the other two I didn’t recognise. One had striking blue eyes and dark hair and pale skin. Her features made her look like a Greek goddess and the other girl had deep green eyes with blonde hair. She reminded me of Tinkerbell.

“I don’t like them,” I whispered loudly to the bartender. Fair to say the alcohol was causing me to have no filter.

            “Why?”

“They have good lives and I don’t. Do you think they saw me?”

            “Yes.”

“Daisy?” a voice I instantly recognised as Liam’s called and I cringed.

I turned around and smiled. “Hi.”

“What are you doing here? Are you okay?” he asked me when I tried to get up. My balance was a little off because I got a head rush.

“I’m fine. What are you doing here?”

“Well they just flew in and Perrie had the baby a few days ago so we’re celebrating.”

            “What did she have?”

“A girl. Arianna Jade. Do you want to join us?”

            “Will there be alcohol?”

“Well we are celebrating so yeah.”

            “Will you be paying?”

            “Probably.”

“Free alcohol. How can I say no?”

“Are you sure you should be drinking more, you seem to have drunk a lot,” Liam said uncertainly looking at the bottle of Vodka that I had been drinking from.

I laughed, “That’s nothing. I usually do a full bottle.”

            “You’re absolutely bonkers.”

“Why don’t you just introduce me to your friends?” I suggested.

            “Okay, guys this is-”

“Daisy Daniels,” the blonde haired one finished for him. “I’m Bella. My sister, Oly Hart, toured with you for a few months last year.”

“Oh are you that sister that ran away from home or something because you didn’t feel like you belonged or some shit like that?”

Bella eyes widened in shock at my abruptness. “Something like that yeah.”

“Anyway,” Liam said awkwardly, “That’s Hope,” he pointed to the girl with blue eyes and dark hair, “And that’s Jade. You already know the lads.”

“Nice to meet you all. Now every nice thought you’ve ever had about me is probably about to go down the drain. Just a fair warning. I’m not the girl in the magazine. At least not for three months.”

We all sat down around a table and I could tell that the group really didn’t know what to think of me. I liked that. I felt like everyone always knew what to expect of me. Amber expected me to be a pain, Beth expected me to be rude and fans and the media expected me to keep my toes firmly on the right side of the line. So I liked the fact that they didn’t know what to expect from me. It felt new. It felt nice. I felt like I could be a whole different self and they wouldn’t even know.

“So how come you’re taking a three month hiatus?” Jade asked with a friendly smile. Her hair was short and just hit her shoulders though she did have shorter layers at the front. It was almost like a pixie cut.

“I was too big of a headache for management. They practically pushed me out of the door,” I said. “So help me out here, who’s with who? I know Harry and Jade are a couple. You guys were all over the tabloids but who are you two with?” I asked pointing two fingers at Bella and Hope.

“I’m with Louis,” Hope put her hand up.

“I’m with Niall,” Bella then answered.

            “Cute,” I said.

“What about you? Are you with anyone?” Hope asked and I laughed. I couldn’t help it. That idea was absurd.

“To have a happily ever after you need to be sane. I’m not sane. I’ve got a lot of patching up to do.”

“What do you have to be broken about?” Bella asked and I decided right in that moment that I didn’t like her. She had said it in such a snobbish way like what could a pretty, rich white girl possibly be broken about right?

“Let’s just say my life has never been cupcakes and rainbows, okay?” I said harshly. “Where’s the alcohol at?”

“You are nothing like they say you are,” Harry said but he didn’t say it in a bad way. More of a ‘wow, I wasn’t expecting this but let’s see where it goes’ kind of way.

“She gave you a fair warning,” Liam butted in.

“No, but seriously. You are completely different,” Louis added, “And is that a tattoo on your wrist?”

I immediately slapped a hand over my wrist where the tattoo is. I usually covered it up with bracelets but I forgot to put one on today. I loathed the tattoo. It was just a reminder of my past.

“It’s nothing,” I muttered and I tucked my hand under the table.

            “We won’t judge,” Louis persisted.

“Louis, don’t pry,” Hope said quietly, “It’s obviously private.”

I liked Hope. She was nice. I smiled gratefully at her and I think it was one of the most genuine smiles I had smiled in a year.

“Are you like bipolar or something?” Bella asked.

            “Bella!” Liam barked.

“I’m sorry, she can’t help it,” Niall apologised for Bella, “She’s a doctor. She likes to have a logical reason behind everything.”

“I’m not bipolar,” I said with a fake smile and Bella looked away.

“So do you have any brothers or sisters?” Harry asked and my smile softened.

            “I have a little brother. He’s eight.”

“Awe! How come no one knows about him?” Jade asked.

“I don’t want my family in the lime light. I like to keep my personal life private.”

“Something we fail to do,” Niall said with a bitter smile.

“I told my management from the beginning though. No questions on my family or my past or anything to so with my personal life.”

            “Touchy subject?” Liam asked.

“I only talk about my family when I have a bottle of vodka in my hand.”

“So it is a touchy subject,” Liam concluded.

“Well not everyone can have perfect families who actually love each other unconditionally and I think I’ve pried enough. I should get going.”

“No,” Hope frowned, “You should stay. We haven’t even ordered anything yet.”

“Thanks but I’ve crashed your party long enough,” I said getting up. “By the way if any of this gets out to the tabloids I will sue.”

“You’ve got an image to maintain,” Bella said.

“Glad you’re catching on,” I said smoothly before grabbing my bag off the floor and walking out of the bar.
