chapter 24

Y/n had finally learned who Bonten really is, and it was all thanks to Tachibana Naoto.

The two met back when Naoto was still training to be a police officer. Y/n often visited her father at the camp where Naoto and other police trained.

They would spend time back then and the people that see them were so sure the two would end up together but alas, they didn't.

When she called him, it was like a breath of fresh air to him. It was true that he liked the girl but he chose not to confess and to just stay friends.

And he was sure that Y/n only sees him as a friend anyway so he didn't risk confessing. But what does Y/n feel about him? Well, she wasn't sure herself.

They were both young and had big aspirations, so who were they to keep each other from reaching their dreams?

And so they just drifted apart.

She found out that Naoto has been dealing with the investigation regarding Bonten but he just couldn't get solid evidence to finally put them behind bars because Bonten would always frame someone else.

Naoto and Y/n had devised a plan to finally trap Bonten for good. But because of how busy the two were, they can only exchange words through e-mails and phone calls.

So to finalize everything they decided to meet an hour before the party. But for now, she needed to speak with her father to strengthen their plan.

But her father was also quite busy at the moment and so she turned to her mother. Y/n visited her parents' home.

Y/n told her mother everything. From the very beginning when she witnessed the death of one of the most powerful men in architecture, to her plan on trapping Bonten. Of course, her mother has her full support.

It was the day of the party but the gathering won't begin until nightfall. It was still morning so Y/n used that time to get ready for her plan.

Her main goal was to protect everyone in the party since she doesn't know why would the chief members of Bonten would stick around her.

Was Bonten planning to get close to her family all this time? Sano knew who she was at the beginning so her theory wasn't that far-fetched.

But if they were planning to get close to her, why did Kakucho try so hard to keep her away from meeting Bonten? Was he protecting her?

And now not only her life but everyone at the party is in danger.

If only she had listened to Kakucho and stayed out of his business then maybe she didn't have to get involved in such a mess. It was that time when she really had gotten involved with Bonten.

No. That wasn't the beginning. If only she hadn't befriended Takeomi that night. If only she had chosen a different location to do her project.

If only she hadn't explored that abandoned market street. If only she hadn't witnessed anything. Then maybe, just maybe, she won't be thinking of dying tonight.

But her death wasn't the biggest problem on her mind. It was the thought of her parents dying because of her own carelessness that scared her.

She didn't want to be the cause of anyone's death. The guilt of it will be too heavy for her to carry.

The party is held in a modernized ballroom. Everything was glistening; the ceiling, the crystals in the chandeliers, the decorative gems on the walls, and even the floor.

There are also huge windows on one side of the room, and glass doors that led to a wide balcony with a view of the large garden.

Y/n was already at the place even before the other guests arrived, she was waiting for Naoto so they could discuss their plan in much detail.

Time was running, she peeked out of the window to see the entrance, most guests were already arriving but Naoto was still nowhere to be found. She was starting to feel anxious.

"Miss Y/n" One of the servants called her. "Your mother is asking for you. And she asked for you to wear this"

It was a laced mask that covers the top half of her face. She didn't ask what it was for and she only wore it and followed the servant.

The servant led her to a room, they opened it and she entered. Inside her mother stood by a window looking outside.

"Mom? What's the mask for?" She asked.

Her mother turned to her with a smile. "Here," She handed Y/n a phone-like device. "Some specific mask is embedded with a tracker and it'll show you their location here"

"So, they're wearing masks with trackers on them?" Y/n asked, trying to process her mother's words.

M/n nodded. "Oh, don't tell your father but..." Her mother then grabbed something from a drawer. A gun. "Use this, for self-defense of course"

Y/n wasn't a stranger to weapons, she had held guns before when she trained to be in the military like her father but she wasn't able to pass because she can't actually pull the trigger.

And so, she became an architect like her mother instead.

She took the gun from her mother. "Thank you"

"Name and Invitation please" The person by the entrance spoke.

"Is that really necessary-" Sanzu was cut off when Kakucho kicked him on the leg. "Ow-!"

"Kakucho Hitto" The black-haired man spoke and handed the woman his invitation letter.

"Please wear this" The woman handed him a mask that surprisingly matched his suit. "Enjoy the party, Sir Kakucho"

The chief members of Bonten looked at each other. They weren't informed the party would be a masquerade.

"I didn't know this would be a masquerade" Sanzu muttered.

Kokonoi then spoke. "Thank God. I won't see your face tonight" He then sighed sarcastically. "Too bad the mask won't be able to help cover up that hideous outfit you're wearing" He then opened his hand fan and covered his mouth to prevent him from laughing.

"I- What do you mean hideous?!" The pink-haired man exclaimed.

"Can everyone please try not to argue with each other?" Takeomi was tired of everyone. "And Sanzu, try and be sober for the rest of the night"

"Bet he wouldn't be able to do it" Rindou commented with a teasing smile.

"Bet he'll end up throwing up later" Ran added as he laughed with his brother.

"Bet he'll pass out" Rindou said and both brothers were cackling by now.

It was sort of an inside joke to them since it reminded the brothers of the one event the three of them had to attend and Sanzu got so high and drunk, that he ended up throwing up in front of everyone and then passing out.

The brothers didn't even try to help him, they just silently laughed as Sanzu laid on the cold floor, swimming in his own vomit.

It was embarrassing, to say the least.

It wasn't Sanzu's proudest moment. "I like it better when you two were fighting each other" Sanzu muttered to himself bitterly.
