Yato Pov:

Yato: Yawns...

I hate waking up early... it was 7:45 a.m and were about to receive an email from the school to know if we were going to be the VIP or not...

I presently was in the biggest restaurant on the cruise ship, I was standing in line to be able to choose what I was going to take for breakfast. When it was my turn to order, I immediately ordered a coffee but I didn't really know what to choose to eat... I was looking at the menu until suddenly...

???: Hoi hurries up...

Yato: Ehhhh...

I turn around to see who it was and I immediately recognized this guy... it's was Yahiko... the dog of Katsuragi...

Yato: Ahh ehh, sorry It's just that I don't know what to order.

Yahiko: Tsk, you are not in D-Class for nothing.

Yato: Ehhh so I had been placed in D-Class because I don't know what to order for breakfast?

Yahiko: Hoi don't mess with me!

Yato: Haha calm down... calm down. It's way too early for that.

I turned around then ordered two toast.

Yato: And there you go, you will be able to order too. Have a nice day, A-Class student-sama.

And then after that, I went to get my coffee and my toast. He was obviously mad at what I just told him. He was really too easy to provoke...

Yato: Don't worry about that Hirata, anyway I don't think I'm the best person to complain about someone's delay...

Hirata: Haha well I can't really contradict you on this.

He then sat down in one of the chairs in front of me... I put my phone on the table since Hirata had just arrived... 

Hirata: Thanks for accepting for coming, Fukazawa-kun.  I'm a little disappointed that Horikita-san didn't agree to come.

Yato: Yeah... we can't force her either.

???: Oh hey Fukazawa-kun, Hirata-kun. Good morning!

Me and Hirata turned our heads to see the person who just had arrived... it was Kushida... she then immediately sat next to Hirata. I was going to start talking when suddenly...

TING!

It was a notification sound from my phone... I decided to ignore it and ask a question about the next exam but...

Kushida: Hm Fukazawa-kun, you shouldn't check your phone? He rang two times already, it may be important.

Yato: Nahh don't worry about it, nobody usually sends me a message. It's probably an error or just a stalker.

Hirata didn't notice it but... Kushida frown at what I said... it was normal because she was the stalker... since last night after the meeting she's been trying to have a discussion with me... when she texted me last night, I didn't answer her and I changed the notification sound when that her who text me... the best is to ignore her for the moment...

Anyway... I will finally be able to ask my question...

Yato: Which outcome would you want to get?

I was curious to see their views regarding this exam. Of course, we still don't know if the VIP is in our class but we can already know what is our goal in this exam...

Hirata: Hmm for me I think the best outcome will be the first one. It benefits everyone... but if we want to go in A-Class... No, the best outcome is the first one.

I'm not at all surprised by his answer... with his way of doing, begging friendly and try to be a pacifist with everyone it was sure that he was going to choose the first one. I was really curious why he was so nice to everyone, and how he could still be... he never been had backstabbed by someone who took advantage of his kindness? This is the kind of people I really couldn't understand... he reminded me a bit of my little brother, but much more exaggerated...

Yato: I see... and you Kushida?

She seems surprised that I ask her the question but she hides it very well... 

Kushida: Well for me, I would try to get some class points. So I will try to achieve outcome 3 or outcome 4.

Hirata: It is also a good choice. You Fukazawa-kun?

Yato: Hm for me...

Our three phones receive a notification at the same time. It was now 8 a.m and the school had just sent the email about the VIP. Kushida and Hirata take their phone to check the email that they just received... but for me...I didn't check it. I decide to watch the reaction of people around us... there were some people who seemed relieved to probably not be the VIP... some people, on the contrary, seem disappointed to probably not be the VIP...  I couldn't know who was the VIP just by looking at their reaction... but I still preferred to watch them...  after all, some of them still had a reaction that could leave some doubts if they are the VIP or not...

Hirata: Huh you don't read the message Fukazawa-kun?

Yato: After finishing my coffee. Even if I check it in 10 minutes, it will not change the fact if I'm the VIP or not.

Hirata: Oh yes. Well, let's finish our breakfast so we can go to a place where we can talk in private.

Kushida: Prefect.

I just nodded, it was no use to reading the mail send by the school now. I preferred to wait when we are going to be at a place with no one around... Anyway for now I will just finish my coffee and my toast...

I entered the room without waiting any longer... I wanted to finish this discussion as soon as possible.

The first thing I noticed when I start looking around was how everything was clean. In my room, Ike and Yamauchi let their stuff hang around which was causing a mess. I noticed on their table that there were some cards games. I didn't know who was Kushida's roommates but there was no doubt she got along well with them... That's why I had to be careful with the problem of Kushida... the influence she must have probably exceeded my estimation...

Kushida: You can sit down, Fukazawa-kun, Hirata-kun!

Me and Hirata sit on chairs near the table... Kushida remained standing.

Hirata: Good, now I think we can speak without any fear...

Yato: Hmm it would be better to show each other our messages...you never know if someone listens at the door...

Hirata: Okay, let's do it like this then.

I then take out my phone from my pocket and open the mail that the school sends me...

[EMail]: After a period of thorough consideration, you have not been chosen as the VIP. Please act together as one and challenge the exam in that manner. The exam itself shall begin from 1:00 PM today onwards. The exam will be held for three days from this point onwards. If you belong to the (Dragon) group please come up to the room marked as such on the second floor.

So I'm not the target huh... it's a good thing in the end... I didn't want the be the VIP in the first place. Now it just remains to know if Hirata, Kushida, or Horikita is the target... I remain on the same opinion as last night... the best would be that the VIP is not among the four of us...being the VIP in this group wouldn't be a good thing...

I then show my phone to Hirata and he did the same...

Yato: So Hirata is also not the target...

Hirata: I see... then your turn Kushida-san

All who left were Kushda and Horikita... Kushida takes out her phone and shows the message received by the school to us...

[EMail]: After a period of thorough consideration, you have been chosen as the VIP. Please act together as one and challenge the exam in that manner. The exam itself shall begin from 1:00 PM today onwards. The exam will be held for three days from this point onwards. If you belong to the (Dragon) group please come up to the room marked as such on the second floor.

Yato: Sighs...

This is exactly what I wanted to avoid... Kushida as the VIP... with Ryuuen in your group it makes things even more complicated. My action during this exam is greatly reduced with that... Unless I solve my problem with Kushida first?... Nah I will need more preparation before... I will continue to have as little interaction as possible with Kushida for the time being... this is the best solution for the moment. Because she's not going to talk about my forearm to anyone cause she knows that I know about her and Ryuuen. Even if that her words have more value than mine for the moment, if she talks it could damage her reputation as well... and she understood it very well...

Hirata: So now we know which outcome will be the best for us.

Yeah, now the most reliable outcome will be the 2... outcome 4 will be great for the class points but it's difficult to set up... and the most dangerous would be the 1 because she lead to outcome 3...

Yato: Hm I will inform Horikita about all this.

Hirata: Indeed it's a good idea.

Kushida: Yes of course...telling all this to Horikita-san is the best thing to do.

Again... every time it comes to Horikita there is something weird about her... Does Horikita know something about Kushida? I will have to ask about this Horikita directly...

After a while, I sent the message to Horikita specifying that Kuishida was the VIP, I got an answer from her.

[Horikita]: Perfect, we will take the necessary actions for this exam then. I saw Ayanakoji this morning, he is not the target in his group. But something happened during I met Ayanakoji, Ryuuen has come and he told us that he knows that it wasn't my plan during the previous exam. Now he's looking for the person behind all this. You are his main suspect, be careful.

Well, first Kiyo is not a VIP too. I should call him or go see him directly for he tells me who is the person in his group to have a better overview of this exam... because I had a doubt about something but with the message that the school send us, I got the answer...

I open the message from the school and reread a specific part...

Yato: After a period of thorough consideration, you have not been chosen as the VIP.

I have the confirmation that the school chooses the target and it's not randomly chosen... it just remains to know what are the criteria of the school to choose the target... does it has to do with our placement in each group? After all, Hoshinomiya-Sensei confirmed to me that I had been placed in the group Dragon and that they were not made randomly... Well anyway, for the moment I lack too much information to draw a conclusion...

Now the other thing... Ryuuen know about Horikita. I must say that I'm not surprised at all. In fact, if he would have believed that Horikita was the mastermind behind the last exam, I would have been disappointed. But the fact that he suspected me doesn't bother me too much... after all, I told Kyio to put the merit of the victory to Horikita because I don't want to become a leader for the Class... it's a lot of too many unnecessary problems that I want to avoid... and a leader with no motivation for the A-Class is probably not a good thing, right?

Anyway, Horikita did not ask me for help or advice for this exam. She must be confident and must above all this want to prove her value. But with Kushdia in our group, it won't be easy... personally, I still don't know what I'm going to do in this exam... I can't really boycott this exam soo I will see in due time what I will do... but the first thing I want to know...

I lifted my gaze from my phone and start looking at Kushida and Hirata who were talking about the exam...

Horikita Pov:

I was present sitting on a chair in the room designated for our group. Everyone was grouped by their respective class... 

Before coming here I meet Hirata and Kushida to share our thoughts about what would be the best strategy to adopt. At first, I didn't want to meet with those two to talk about a plan but now that Kushida was the target I had no choice to talk to them before the first reunion. I would have preferred that Fukazawa come too but he said he had something else to do before the reunion at 13 p.m.

Horikita: Fukazawa...

I look at my phone and it said 12:59 p.m...I look around and everyone was already there... except the person who was supposed to sit next to me... the chair next to me was still free...

Horikita: What are you doing Fukazawa-kun!

At the same time, the door behind me opened and I heard someone come into the room...

Loudspeaker: From this point onwards, we will begin with the first group discussion.

???: HAHAHA it was close.

I immediately recognized this laugh... the person who had just arrived had attracted the attention of everyone present... I turned around and saw Fukazawa approaching his seat... after he sat down he started looking at me with a puzzled expression...

Yato: Hm why are you looking at me with that look?

At this moment I was a little angry... I had just told him to be careful because Ryuuen suspect him to be the mastermind and right after that he made an entrance like that...

Horikita: Sighs... Why are you late...

Yato: oh it's just that I almost forgot this!

He pointed the book in his left hand...he really almost arrived late for the exam for a book? No, it can't be... he is not stupid... he would have a plan?... right?...

Yato Pov:

Phew... I almost forgot my book that I didn't have time to finish yesterday. Horikita start to look at me really puzzled. But she was not the only one...in fact, I had attracted the attention of the majority of people here...

Yato: Well... as long as I have my book haha

It was already a minute since the message that the message who told us that the exam had started was said... but yet, nobody had started the conversation... everyone was gathered in small groups in the room according to their class... until...

Hirata: Hello everyone, I know most of you but I think it would be great if we introduce each other just to be sure. This will facilitate the conversation for the rest of the exam. 

Hirata was the first to make his move. He was also the best person for this role, his attitude and popularity were perfect for starting a conversation...

Kushida: I agree with Hirata-kun, it's the best thing to get to know us all.

Katsuragi: I don't think there's any need for that. The school's just saying it as a formality. Only the ones who want to introduce themselves should do it.

Kushida: Huh? Why...

Kushida played the nice girl with her amazing acting skill... but despite this Katsuragi didn't say another word and kept his arm crossed and his eyes closed...

Hirata: I understand your point of view Katsuragi-kun. But there may be a recorder hidden somewhere in this room. If we blatantly disobey the instructions from the school, it may not just be you but the whole group that gets punished and I would like to avoid this at all costs.

Hmm, that's was not a bad argument from Hirata... even though I don't think the school would penalize us for that... but as Hirata said, the best would be to avoid this. So Katsuragi should not refuse Hirata's proposal...

Katsuragi: Maybe you're right. So I have no problem if we introduce ourselves.

Hirata: Great, thank you Katsuragi-kun. Then I will start...

Wel all then gathered around the table to form a single group...

Everyone started to introduce themself, Kushida's introduction was as friendly as usual, Horikita was as cold as usual... and me... Well, I think my introduction was normal... I guess... Anyway, the thing that surprised me a little was Ryuuen's class participation in all this.

The most important thing that I noticed is since I arrived Ryuuen didn't look in my direction once... of course, I did not look back because it was just what he was waiting for... If I look in his direction I will fall into his trap... I saw with my peripheral vision that one of his classmates just observed me from the beginning... Ryuuen was looking for the mastermind, and the first thing he did was to tell Horikita that I was his main suspect for that she warns me...and now he tries to have a reaction from me by ignoring me...If I start to look at him and react to the fact that he ignores me it could mean that I have something to hide...

Yato: Haha well done Ryuuen but you won't get anything with this.

After we all introduced ourselves, Kanzaki stand up from his seat...

Kanzaki: Great now that we have finished this. I would like to share a proposal that my class came with.

Ryuuen: Ohh an idea of Ichinose? Something like we're all friends? Kuku

Kanzaki: Yes Ryuuen. Our class proposal is to assume that there are no VIP in this group. I'd like to ask if everyone here would like to work together to clear this exam through outcome 1. I'd like to ask you if you all think this is the best course of action or not?

Ryuuen: Ehh...

Hirata should be glad to have someone like Kanzaki in this group... With him maybe the outcome that Hirata wants could be achieved... Katsuragi still had his arms crossed and his eyes closed meaning that he had no intention of participating in the conversation...Horikita still didn't say a word yet... 

Yato: Sighs...

I get up from my seat and take my chair a little further away from the group. I sit down and open my book and start reading it.

Ryuuen: Kuku it seems that someone has already given up.

Indeed, I had no interest in participating in the conversation... of course, I will listen to what they say while I read my book, but with this group and the fact that the VIP is in our class there is not much I can do... I'm going to let Horikita handle this group as she wants.

Yato: Well, I will read to pass the time...

As soon that the meeting ended, I got up and left the room. I decided not to wait for Horikita and the others because I didn't have the time to eat before coming to the meeting. I wanted to go for dinner as soon as possible.

There were a lot of people in the corridor because the meeting had finished at the same time for everyone... so as not to waste any more time, I decided to take a little detour to avoid the crowd.  I was about to come out from inside the ship to go toward where was the restaurant of the ship but someone bump into me and fell on the floor...

???: Ouch...

Yato: Matsushita? Are you okay?

Matsushita: Yes sorry I was walking too fast and I didn't see you.

Yato: Nah it's me who should apologize...

I held out my hand to help her to get up. She took it then got up.

Matsushita: Thank you, Fukazawa-kun.

Yato: Why do you seem in such a hurry?

Matsushita: I had a meeting with my friends who are in a different group than mine during the exam. So I wanted to hurry to join them... You?

Yato: Oh me?

I was surprised that she asked this question too...

Yato: Well I was about to go eat somewhere.

She seems to think about something before answering me... until

Matsushita: Do you think it bothers you if I go with you?

Go with me? I never spoke with her and I don't know much about her... the only thing I noticed and know about her is during the study group... she was writing wrong answers on purpose to get an average result during the test I give them...

I have not really had reason to refuse to let her come with me... I could even learn useful things about her or the class...

Yato: I don't mind but it's okay for your friend you were about to join?

Matsushita: Don't worry I just have to warn them that I will not be able to join them.

Yato: Hmm well then let's go...

Matsushita Pov:

I was born in a moderately wealthy family, and my parents were very kind to me and brought me up in an environment with no restrictions on my freedom. They would buy whatever I desired, and in return, I also achieved outstanding results in school and tuition classes.

However, since I managed to enter this school, I had to aim higher. Studying abroad in a prestigious university, then working at an embassy, and then in the UN...I could gradually see that happening. My life was going smoothly, and there was already a paved road ahead for a life without failure. 

However, my first miscalculation was after I entered this school. Only if I graduated from A-Class would I be able to have my desired future higher education and employment opportunities. In other words, graduating from B-Class or below would have no value.

I'd started to realize that the difference in base ability between the classes was even larger than I'd imagined. Sooner or later, the gap would inevitably widen. The gap in the abilities of my class compared to other classes was too large. If that fact didn't change, the chances of reaching A-Class were very close to 0.

Some people start to lead this class for the best like Hirata, Horikita, and Kushida. Others are good students like Yukimura and Mii-chan. But this is not enough. In fact, most of the students hold us back. and there is this person...

Fukazawa Yato

During the first month of school, he befriended no one and spent most of his time alone. But when the class fell into chaos because we had zero points, he was probably the only one to have seen through the school system. I then started to observe him but he didn't do anything else... until the last exam. With Horikita's plan, they managed to get a victory for our class.

He always had that carefree and nonchalant air but I need to know if his purpose is the A-Class or otherwise what is his goal. That's why I absolutely wanted to accompany him to try to learn more...

If I can still hide my real strength and help him behind the scenes that could be a good thing...

We just arrived in a cafe who there were not many people inside. I went to one of the back tables while Matsushita was still following me. She probably had a reason why she wanted to come with me but I still didn't what she wanted from me...

I sat down and she sat in the chair in front of me... after we both ordered something to drink and eat. 

I hesitated to start the conversation and ask her why she wanted to accompany me... but she was the first one to speak...

Matsushita: Thank you Fukazawa-kun for letting me come with you... In fact, I wanted to talk with you about something specific.

Yato: It was pretty obvious since were had never spoken to each other before.

She did not seem surprised by the fact that I know about her intention by following me here... I might have acted like if I didn't know finally... Anyway...

Yato: I listen to you then...what did you want to ask me?

Matsushita: It's about the previous exam. Horikita-san had prepared a plan to give us the victory and you help her to achieve that. Horikita-san told us that you acted on her orders but why did you do that? What are your intentions exactly? Horikita-san and Hirata-kun can be considered the leader of the class for now. Does your goal be to lead the class with them to reach the A-Class? You clearly have the capacity for this role with what I noticed.

I noticed that she was hiding her true capacity but it goes beyond my suspicions. Now she wanna know what I'm planning to do for the class... I don't know why she wants to know this when she hides her true abilities herself... why bother about the A-Class when you don't make any effort yourself? Anyway, who am I to judge her choice and actions... I will just answer her honestly...

Yato: I am not a leader and I never will be. Maybe I would have the required quality but I'm not interested. I am not the head of the class so If you want to talk about strategy or problems in the class. you better go see Hirata or Horikita... I helped Horikita in the last exam with her plan because I owed a debt to her...

The last part was a lie, but I never going to talk to her about Kiyo... but the rest of what I said was true. She was obviously disappointed with my answer... I was more and more curious as to why she seemed interested in A-Class but did nothing herself to help our class... but this discussion allowed me to know that she had some great capacity, she was not a student like Yamauchi... so maybe...

Yato: But... even though I don't plan to be a leader... that does not prevent me from acting for the good of the class. 

I regained her attention as soon I said my last sentence...

Matsushita: What do you mean by that?

Yato: I find this school system interesting. So maybe sometimes, I will participate in the success of the class. So why not give me your help in these times? I don't know why you hide your strength, but even if you don't want to reveal your real capacity you could still lend me help behind the scene, right? After all, you have nothing to lose with that.

If I could have her help it would be great... she seems to have good reasoning and most important she is friends with a lot of people in the class, she does not have as much influence as Kushida or Karuizawa but it's always better than nothing... that way I would have a lot more information...

She seems to think about my offer for a moment, she was about to say something until...

Waiter: Here is your order.

Yato: Oh thanks!

He gave us the stuff that we ordered... I had ordered a coffee with a sandwich... when the waiter left she said as she was about to say earlier...

Matsushita: I accept your offer. If you can contribute to the success of the class. Like you said I don't want to expose my real abilities but if I can help you without exposing myself, I will do it.

Yato: Great, let's start now. In which group you are in this exam?

If I can have more information about this exam it would be great.

Matsushita: I'm in the Cow group, I noted the people who are in my group. Here.

She takes out her phone and opens the block note app and shows it to me. There were all the names of people in her group.

That was the list of the people from the Cow group, but there was something strange about this list...

Yato: Hmm you did not separate them into their respective class like the sheet that the teacher show us yesterday?

Matsushita: Ahh sorry, I usually put things in alphabetical order. Sorry if it bothers you.

Yato: Nah not at all. I was just curious...

I gave her back her phone back... I had already memorized the members of the cow group...

Matsushita: So what have you learned so far about the exam?

Yato: Hmm some stuff so far but nothing that really puts me on the track...

Matsushita: I see, except for the list of my group I have no other information to give you for the moment.

Yato: It's already a good start. The more information we have, the more easily we will be able to find out how the exam works.

Matsushita: Your right. The first thing I thought about this exam was the fact that we were separated into groups of the Zodiac Chinese signs. It probably has something to do with, right Fukazawa-kun?

Yato: Yes definitely, I also think it has to do with our placement.......in groups?

When I said the last part of my sentence, I had like a moment's hesitation... Matsushita noticed it and looked at me puzzled... 

I just think about something when I said the word ''placement''...

Yato: Hey Matsushita can you pass me your phone again, please?

Matsushita: Oh eh yes sure.

She takes out her phone and gives it to me again...

I look at the list of names again... yeah maybe...maybe not our placement but rather... Yeah, I need to confirm my theory... but I'm going to need a lot of information to be sure I'm right about this...

I gave her back her phone...

Yato: Hey Matsushita, do you think you are able to gather certain information for me?

Matsushita: Yes probably, what exactly do you want to know?

I explained to her the information I wanted to know...

Matsushita: Yes I can totally have them without a problem. Do you have a lead concerning the exam?

Yato: Yeah maybe but I'm sure of nothing at the moment.

Matsushita: Okay I will get the information you want then...

She got up from her seat...

Matsushita: I will have to go now but before we should exchange our numbers.

Yato: Yeah totally... here mine.

After we have finished exchanging our numbers...

Matsushita: Perfect. I'm glad to team up with you Fukazawa-kun. So then in the future, when you would want to help the class in the next exam you could ask me if you want me to help you. As long I can hide my ability, I will help you. Anyway,  I will contact you later when I got the info you want, Bye Fukazawa-kun!

She went to pay for her meal then she left the restaurant after that...

It was a very good thing this unexpected meeting with Matsushita. I was able to gain two things from that meeting... The first one is I gain the help of Matsushita for the future, it's was really a good thing... she was really smart and her reasoning was not bad at all... and above all, she will not complain if I decide not to take action during an exam... I made it clear to her that I am not the leader of the class and that I will not be in the future... it was the thing I wanted to avoid as much as possible... I don't care to be the ''soldier'' I just don't want to lead the class...

Yato: I am still curious to see if Horikita will ask for my help or the one of Kiyo soon...

And the other thing I gained with this meeting was a lead for this exam... I take out my phone and open the note app. I started to write in a specific order all the members of my group... when I finish...

Yato: 1,2,3,4,5...Kushida Kikyo... so I would be right... I just need more info to confirm it...

I close the app and sent a message to Kiyo to know how the exam is going for him...after a few minutes, I received a message...

[Kiyo]: Nothing for the moment, I can send you the names of the members of my group. I get back to you later if I have anything new or if I need something. Do you have anything?

[Yato]: Same nothing for now. Send me the list and text me later if you have anything new.

I decided not to tell him about Matsushita and the theory I have about this exam... I still don't know what this guy is up to... I prefer to stay on my guard for the moment... And anyway, I'm sure of nothing yet with my theory...

After a few minutes, I received the list of members of his group...

Classe-A : Takemoto Shigeru, Machida Kouji, Morishige Takuro 

Classe-B: Ichinose Honami, Hamaguchi Tetsuya, Beppu Ryouta 

Classe-C : Ibuki Mio, Manabe Shiho, Yabu Nanami, Yamashita Saki

I had just come back to my room after the second meeting of the first day. There was no real progress. No useful discussion... but that's was a good thing for us if Kushida can stay hidden. Katsuragi and his classmates did not say a single word... Ryuuen was quite quiet too.

I opened the door of my room and went inside... Ike and Yamauchi were already back from their meeting and they were playing a video game on the tv in the room...

I opened the mini-fridge from our room and took a bottle of water... I started to watch the tv to see what they were playing... it's was a fighting game... I do not have played a lot of those kinds of games... Ike noticed that I watched them play and he said...

Ike: If you want to try I can give you my place.

Yato: For real... well yeah why not, thanks!

I was wrong about you Ike...

He gave me his controller... it didn't seem like an extremely complicated game... I should be able to win...

Yamauchi: You can choose your character first.

There was just one thing that I want to clarify, the thing is I don't know if Yato's presence in the Dragon group would change the VIP. Because the VIP is designated by the Japanese alphabetic order and I don't know where Fukazawa Yato would be in it. If someone knows and who can tell me it would be nice but even if technically Kushida would no longer be the VIP because of Yato, I wouldn't change anything because I have already planned the scenario. I just hope that doesn't bother you guys.
