|19| Stay

Midoriya cannot concentrate at your lessons at all. 2 days had already passed since the two of you confessed to each other, and he made no move or whatsoever to approach you. Not even in lunch where he usually sits beside you, now he lets Uraraka take the seat beside you while he beside Iida.

He didn't know why but he felt super overwhelmed by his emotions, whenever he's near you...he just went overdrive. Like all his instincts would go nuts and reflexes would scream for him to stay put and do nothing. Maybe it was because he was scared...

No, it wasn't a maybe. He is scared of rejection from you. Those words that could break your friendship...he wouldn't want that. It was the last thing that he wanted, and he didn't want to ruin everything that the two of you built together.

But then, if things still go on this way...

I don't want to lose that touch.

It was already the practical exam about the lesson of controlling bleeding. The whole Class 1-A was on your faculty which was a technical laboratory. The school provided some robots that could help you demonstrate on how to do first aid. This also became a tool for them to practice on how to do it properly since first-aid is a crucial activity that must be done without mistakes.

The exam ended as the bell rang, each student was all ready for lunch. But you just sighed on the ones who didn't passed, eyebrows furrowed in slight disappointment.

"All of the people I will call, stay here." Everyone became tense as you announced that and nervous whispers spread like wildfire throughout the room along with your demanding voice that tells one thing.

You silenced them as you leaned to sit on the desk, your free hand was in the pocket of your coat. "Mina, Kirishima, Kaminari...and..." You narrowed your eyes at the next name before clearing your throat as you continued. "Midoriya."

Everyone was shock when Midoriya was called. He was one of the best and intelligent student here, how could he fail your exam?

With a sigh, you nodded and waved all those who weren't called.

"Those who aren't called, you can go and take your lunch." You noticed Uraraka and Iida bidding their goodbyes to Midoriya and to those who stayed.

With your arms crossed, you tipped your chin in an intimidating expression.

"Sit."

They knew that it wasn't a request. It was a command from a teacher no matter what your age is. You were still superior than them. So they obediently complied and took sat at their own seat without any question.

"You guys..." You said in a low tone, almost warning and frustrated, "...do know why I didn't let you leave right?"

Mina swallowed while Kirishima and Kaminari looked at each other with fear in their eyes...Midoriya was...just plain sad.

"You failed this test and you do know that this test is a part of your mock exam for the upcoming midterms in my subject, is that right?"

The four of them nodded slowly, not having the courage to protest. You let a scoff as you walked in front of them, and gave them look.

"I will give you a second chance...but you should do this right or else... First-aid is a must for a hero like you...if you fail this test, that means you fail on being a hero. Remember that my subject is still one of the major subject of the hero course, and you have no excuse to skip it or to fail it." Your voice was stern as you lecture them, crossing your arms and huffed.

"We will have supplementary lessons for tomorrow after school and we will do it until you understand it—until you drop. Then we will retake the exam at Saturday. Is that clear?"

"Yes, Ma'am!"

You nodded as you huffed, straightening your coat and nodded towards the door. "You can go..." All of them stood up to leave, except for Midoriya who stayed behind until everyone's gone. You raised a brow at his actions, but you brushed it off and continued to clean the room by putting the utensils on their right places.

"Why did you stay?" You asked in plain tone, laced with a bit of bitterness and anger. It wasn't that you were angry at him, rather, it was his actions that bothered you.

He completely distanced himself and pretended like you didn't exist, and now he fails your subject?

Why?

"I-I...I wanted to apologize."

"For what?"

"For ignoring you."

You let out a snort as you arranged the tools on their respective places, keeping it clean and neat. "Then...?"

"I'm sorry that I failed your subject. I'm so sorry."

You let out a breath as you turned to him, throwing a worried look at him. "Midoriya..."

Then you walked in front of him, grabbing a chair and sat in front of him. You still kept your distance away since you didn't know if he was still uncomfortable on being around you. "You ignoring me...it bothers me. But as a teacher, failing this subject hurts me."

He lifted his gaze towards you as you spoke, listening intently on what you were saying.

"You wanted to become a hero, right? You need to stay focused for this subject and pass all the exams so you can be a better hero than anyone else. If all of this is because of me... I don't want to be the reason why you're failing this... So if you wanted me to stay away, I'll stay away. I don't care about what you think about me..." Then you paused, heaving a breath as you looked at him with a worried gaze.

"I care about what you want to achieve for yourself. So you should pursue your dreams...I'll just be here. You can shoo me if you want...just...don't let me be the one to hold you back."

It's funny for Midoriya. He was the one who stayed away yet you still cared about his dreams and success, willing to stay away if he wanted to.

That would be the last thing I'd ever want.

You were about to walk away as you stand up, when he grabbed your wrist and pulled you into an embrace. His touch was nostalgic and soft as if it was a fire that was long gone in the middle of a blizzard and it came back to rescue you.

Dramatic, isn't?

Then he whispered, breathe brushing on your ears which sent shivers down your spine and heart furiously drumming against your chest.

"Stay."

For once, his voice was complete, not stammering and concrete as if it was a confident command. So little and a single word expressed so much feeling that you couldn't possibly comprehend, but you understood it in a way that he wanted you to be there...

...that he chose for you not to stay away.

"Hear me out, (Y/N)-san." He mumbled, arms were still wrapped around your figure.

"I'm listening..." You replied.

Midoriya closed his eyes and sighed, breath was fanning through your nape. "I'm so sorry...I was just...distracted by this happening. I wanted to tell you so badly...but...I just..." His voice trailed into a soft murmur before silence.

"You're not ready?" You added, still unsure of your words.

He nodded, pulling you closer. He hid his flustered and blushing face away from you, so you can't see how nervous he was.

"I'll tell you. I promise, (Y/N)-san. It's not your fault that I'm like this...and to think that you're willing to stay away just to fix me...?" He let out a breath as he chuckled, eyes were glued to the floor.

"That's so...thoughtful. Why would you care so much about me?"

You stared at the ground, bringing up your arms to hug him back as you nuzzled your nose on the crook of neck. "You're one of the important people I have in my life. And I don't want to ruin you for it."

He separated from the embrace then gently and softly brushed his fingertips on the strands of your hair. "I am so unfair. What can I do to pay you back?"

You shook your head. "Nothing. I just want you to be the one you wanted to be. The top hero... so go on and continue at doing your best."

Midoriya nodded and gave you a smile.

I'll bring back that smile of yours, (Y/N)-san...I want to see it again.

Your phone suddenly rang, so you raised your hand to Midoriya in gesture for him to be quiet for moment and picked your phone before answering the call.

"Hello? Who's this?"

"Ms. (Y/N) Shuzenji, am I right?"

You nodded, frowning towards Midoriya. "Yup, that's me alright."

"Oh, sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Tsukauchi Naomasa, a detective. You know me right?"

Your face melted from worry into relief as you hummed in agreement. "I do."

"That's good then." Tsukauchi chuckled from the other line while you turned to Midoriya, mouthing him that he can go and you'll just follow him when this call is over. But he threw a worried glance to you before nodding, whispering, "I'll save you a seat. I'll see you then."

You nodded and watched him go out while the detective on the other line spoke. "I wanted to talk about the suspension that was granted on you. You became the youngest pro hero, am I right? At 14 years old you became one?"

"Yes, that's right. What about it?" Although, that fact was little bitter. You were supposed to be out there, saving people yet...

But now, things have changed. Teaching became a thing that you loved and cherished, now that your students was fun to teach. Although you had some bumps along teaching people that's the same age as you, Aizawa and Yamada had open arms to lecture you on how to fix it.

"Well, I made some arrangements and drew the suspension back for a while."

You furrowed your eyebrows, interest piquing at the topic. You leaned, propping your elbows on your lap. "Why?"

"I need you, Shuzenji-san. I want to assign an underground field mission for you."

Your eyes widened as you suddenly stood up, chair falling backwards on the process. "W-Wha? Really?!"

The man on the other line laughed as he heard something fell on your end. You blushed at your sudden outburst, bending to pick the chair up again. "Sorry about that..."

"It's okay. Now I know that you're ready for work. Don't worry, this won't happen until the end of sports fest on U.A."

"Ah...I see. Can you explain the gist of my work so I can be ready?"

Tsukauchi hummed and something shuffled on the other line, something like paper. "I was going to assign you on an investigation. You're good on one-on-one combat right?"

"Yeah."

"Well then...there's this man I want you to catch. This is going to be a private mission and since you have no agency, I figured that you work under the government. Plus, you became the official sidekick of Recovery Girl, but I already called her about this and I was given approval."

You smoothened your coat, sitting back as you continued to listen.

"Now, when you're completely healed and when you're in your condition to fight, I'll give you this mission as soon as possible. This involved a man that works for another bigshot in the underground...his boss has connections to the League of Villains. If we manage to catch him, our intel will widen and so our investigation will move..."

You swallowed and clenched your fist, grinning as you heard all about that.

Talk about on being like a ninja.
