38 // Lesego // Lying Dead

"That imposter is Karabelo, she's Lesego's estranged twin sister," I heard a familiar voice say. I thought I'd heard wrong, but her next words brought my world to a standstill. "They were separated at birth."

"What?" Clay asked in utter disbelief, and then his eyes widened when he saw that I was awake.

He gulped and looked away, as if sensing that I was awake, Abigail turned to look at me.

"Oh!" She chuckled nervously. "Lesego, hi. It's good to see you again," she said hastily before turning to Clay, seemingly panicking.

I sat up straight, a thousand thoughts racing in my head. I'd acknowledged the fact that we were exactly copies, after all, everyone has a doppelganger somewhere out there in the world.

But a twin sister separated at birth? Mom has never said anything about a sister, was that perhaps the reason she was so overprotective of me, did she fear that whoever stole my sister would come back for me?

And this girl, where has she been all this time and why was she wreaking havoc in my life? I feel like if I had found her first, I would have been delighted to be reunited with my twin sister. Why was she doing all this?

Was the saying true about some identical twins been similar on the outside only and have completely different personalities?

I mean, was the idea of having me as a sister that bad?

I sucked in a deep breath while rubbing circles on my stomach. My head ached with all these questions.

Abigail and Clay just stood aside and watched me as if waiting for me to explode, the pity in their eyes was too much.

I got up wordlessly and locked myself in the bathroom. I walked over to the basin and pushed against it as if it would erase everything that's happened over the last few months.

How did I get here? What did I do to deserve all this suffering?

A cold reality crossed my mind, and I shuddered in fear.

"No." I shook my head furiously. "No, God, no!" I took one look in the mirror, and then the water works started.

A knock came from the door, and I quickly splashed my face with cold water. "Lesego?" Clay called, trying to open the door. "Babe...Les, are you okay?" He asked softly.

Was I okay? I mean, looking at my reflection made me cringe, I couldn't stand my own face, because it was the same face that had been haunting me for the past three months. It was the same reason I was so thin to begin with, her mere existence sickened me to the core, and I found myself wandering closer to death each day.

I wanted her gone, but now that she was my sister, I didn't know whether to rejoice or gear for my life.

I don't think I can stare at my reflection again until I've taken care of the lurking evilness.

"Lesego, if you don't open this door, I swear I'm gonna break it." I rolled my eyes. "Les–" I unlocked and pulled the door wide open, and I swallowed all the retorts I was going to throw at him as we stared at each other. It was like there was something different between us; Clay had been so much tender towards me than he was the first time when he picked me up yesterday.

"Hi," he said, almost breathless. He was looking at me as if he was seeing me for the first time.

Maybe he was, I was not the same girl I was before all this happened, a part of me was dead, and I feared that soon he would die with it too.

"Okay, guys!" Abigail snapped us out of our trance, and just like that, everything dissipated, and we were both drawn back to reality.

I walked past Clay, towards Abigail. "Abigail, what's going on? Why was Funeka meeting with them?" I asked.

She frowned. "Meeting with who?"

"Detective Daniels and her."

"Oh!" She said quietly. "I'll find out and get back to you later."

"Abigail," I said slowly, the warning in my voice hanging in the air. "Time is not of luxury right now, I can't wait that long."

She and Clay shared a look before she nodded. "I'll make a call now." She took out her phone and dialled someone. "Funeka, is it done?" I frowned at her, what was she talking about? "Great, keep me updated if you find out anything. Thanks, bye." She looked like she had just been caught with her hand in a cookie jar as she placed her phone in her pocket. "Guess you must be wondering what's going on," she gave a small smile.

"You think?" Clay asked.

"Funeka met up with Daniels and Karabelo to confirm that you are dead."
