Cahpter 13 A lead of justice

After so many years gone, it was time. Time to go back to the town Melissa once had called home. Georgetown. The place she used to go to school in, used to shop grocers, used to have such a wonderful life.

Riding through town and seeing everything once again, made her feel unsure of what to do. The men she was looking for had probably left long ago. Maybe they weren't even in America anymore? Maybe they have gone somewhere else? But Georgetown was her best lead. It was hard, coming back to that town, but she had no other choice.

Melissa rode past the Sherriff's office, reminding her of what she had done and of Sam, who she missed more than anything. The general store was to the right the doctors to the left and a gun store further down the road. Further down to the right was the stables, horses could be seen walking in the pasture while eating grass. People was roaming the streets already, even though it was bright and early morning. Melissa was afraid that someone would recognize her. So afraid that she had ditched all her dresses and shirts she had. Instead, she was wearing a pair of black chaps, with dark blue jeans underneath. A white blouse with a black coat on her. And of course, her black hat and brown boots. She had even cut her hair a little. The long light and dark brown locks of her hair only now reached a bit over her chest. She looked different for sure, and was almost certain that no one would recognize her, still, she was afraid. Riding through town again brought back so many memories. What did the people here think happened to her? Did they know what happened to the Summers family? After all, Lilly and Matthew Summers had been shot dead and their daughter, had just disappeared straight out in the forest where no one ever saw her again. It was more than three years ago, and Melissa had grown a lot since then. She was just a lost kid before. Now, she felt more grownup, yet still lost. She was nineteen and had left this town by the age of fourteen. Felt like ages ago to her.

Melissa was determined to find the men who had killed her parents, she should have gone after them straight away but what could she have done? She thought that she would never be able to kill someone, yet, here she is, with blood on her hands and with darkness in her heart and mind. The best place to start looking was of course the saloon, where all the gossip was. Someone knew everything of everyone. The saloon was always the place you went for information, people weren't exactly afraid of spreading rumors of people and gossip, Melissa knew that for a fact right now.

She hitched Belle outside the big rusty building with the text Saloon, on it and headed inside. Straight forward were the bar and of course Mr. Jeffery Dixon, the bartender. Melissa never knew him, but she knew that he always had some sort of information on everybody in town. You could say he was the leader of gossip, but what else could you expect. He runs a saloon, people all over town and from different states come here to drink, and with the drink, they also talk, a lot.

Melissa opened the swinging doors and tilted her hat slightly down over her face, afraid that someone would recognize her. To the right were a table full of men, smoking and playing poker. On the top floor some women could be seen, looking down at her when she walked in. All of them dressed in short dresses and messy hair. To the left some other men could be seen, one older one, sitting lonely at a table with an empty whisky bottle. Probably drunk. Two men was standing tilted against the bar further down, a bit younger than everyone else, yet, older than Melissa. Everyone looked at her as she took her first step towards the bar. There were only men in this bar, if you didn't count with the working girls on the top floor. Melissa felt their eyes carve into her back as she tried to keep her cool while walking towards the bar. Her feet almost bend, they were weak and Melissa wasn't as brave as she thought.

But she had to do this, she had to act confident and cool, even when she weren't. When she finally reached the bar, she stood beside the two younger men. They looked at her as she flipped a coin up on the disk. While tilting against the bar and nodding towards the whisky bottle.

"Whisky." She said as Mr. Dixon nodded and poured her a glass. So far, no one seemed to notice that it was her. The two men beside her kept drinking their beer, while they looked at Melissa. Surprised to see a woman dressed like a man and drinking whisky in a bar.

"You new in town?" Mr. Dixon asked as he dried a glass with a towel. Melissa drank the whole thing in one shot as she pulled it towards him again, while flipping another coin towards him. "You could say that." She said while Mr. Dixon handed her another glass of whisky.

"You a bounty hunter?" The man standing closest to her suddenly asked, as he inspected her from top to bottom.

Her heart was racing in her chest, but she kept it cool and acted confident. She looked at the man. He had black hair with dark brown eyes and a little beard. Pretty tall and thick too. Maybe she could lie and tell them that she was a bounty hunter and they'd give her information?

"Maybe." She said, acting tough and drinking the rest of the whisky.

"I've never seen a woman do bounty hunting before. Neither have I seen one dressed as a man." He said, looking suspicious at her.

"Well, congrats, this is your first time then pal." Melissa said, looking rough and strong at him.

"I suppose it is. Just watch out, me and Clint here, runs the show in this town and we don't trust other bounty hunters." The man said with a threatened voice.

"Neither do I. So, I suppose we have no trouble then." Melissa said. The men looked at her as they finished their drinks and headed out. Mr. Dixon looked at them as they mounted their horses outside and left. Melissa looked at him, in search of information.

"So, you know any outlaws in town?" She carefully started. Mr. Dixon looked at her and shook his head.

"They weren't joking you know. Clint Morgan and Tyler Colt is very independent with the bounty hunting in this town. I'd be careful if I were you Miss." He said, his eyes concerned and warning. Melissa smiled and shook her head.

"Well, let's just say that I don't think they're looking for the same men as me." She said as she spun the glass around.

"Which men are you looking for then?" Mr. Dixon asked, seeming very interesting.

"Look, no offence, but I don't know you and if I tell, you might tell them boys and they'll steal my bounty." She said, trying to get his interest even more. Mr. Dixon puts down a bottle in the shelf behind him while he picks up Melissa's glass and refills it with whisky.

"It's on the house." He said and gave her a smile, indicating for Melissa that she could trust his silence.

"You ever heard of the Summers family?" She said with a low voice as she took a sip of the whisky.

"Of course. Everyone around here talks about it. Lilly and Matthew Summers, right?" He said, very interested in her words. It stung in Melissa's chest when he said their names, she had to keep it cool and pretend like they weren't her family. If people recognized her, they may think they worst. They will probably ask her a bunch of questions and think all kind of things of her. It was best if she kept it a secret. Melissa nodded towards Mr. Dixon as she took another sip of the whisky.

"Oh, and of course their daughter, but I can't remember her name. Maggie? Mia? Melinda? Mel....?" He said, thinking deeply of her name.

"Melissa?" Melissa said as she tried to hide the truth in her face.

"Yep, that's it. Melissa Summers, but no one ever knew what happened to her. We found Lilly and Matthew but never the daughter, maybe she died too, but somewhere else. But do you know what the weirdest part is?" Mr. Dixon kept going, while Melissa nodded, pretending that what he said was new information to her. "Some old friends to the family stopped by some years ago when they had just died, it couldn't have been more than some weeks after they died, they were buried, both of them. Someone had been there and it weren't no one from town." He said, while putting back the bottle on the shelf.

"That's strange, who did it then?" Melissa asked. Mr. Dixon shrouded his shoulders.

"No idea, the daughter may still be alive, but I hardly believe so." He said.

If only he knew that the daughter was sitting right in front of him right this minute.

"Anyway, what business have you got with that?" Mr. Dixon said as he looked weirdly at her.

"Lilly and Matthew Summers were killed, I'm looking for the men who killed them." Melissa said as she looked down in the glass. Mr. Dixon smiled and shook his head, almost like he thought it was a funny thing to say.

"You find that funny?" Melissa asked with an anger voice, it was her parents and he was laughing. His grin disappeared when he saw the anger in Melissa's eyes.

"No...It's just that everyone knows who did it." He said.

"Everyone but me, who is it?" She said.

"Well, Jack Tannen of course, he lend money to many people and then killed them when they didn't have more. Matthew was one of them, but Jack Tannen haven't been seen since the daughter disappeared." He said confused.

Melissa's heart skipped a beat. Jack Tannen. At least she knew his name now, it will make things a lot easier when she has a name to go after.

"Does anyone know where I can find him?" She said, looking intense at him.

"Listen, it was a long time ago."

"Please, it's important, do you know anything more? Anything at all?" Melissa said.

He sighed as he grabbed her glass and pulled it back under the desk.

"Not me, but the Sheriff might have an old wanted poster of him I believe." He said.

Melissa lighted up as she stood up straight and flipped a coin once again on the desk.

"Here have one for yourself." She said as she smiled and headed outside.

Finally, a real lead after several days of nothing but sorrow and sadness. She finally had something to go after. She couldn't wait to see Jack Tannen's expression when he sees her back. Back to rip him apart for what he and his companions had done. They probably thought that she was dead, like most of the people in town, but how wrong all of them were.

Melissa grabbed Belle and led her towards the Sheriff's office. The Sheriff she once knew whose name was Tony Harbor had apparently died. Either that or he got replaced, a good thing too, he never was a great Sheriff. Melissa didn't know who the new Sheriff was, but she would soon enough find out.

She hitched Belle outside, greeted some men standing by a pole, smoking, while she stepped up and opened the doors to the old building. Inside was three jail boxes to the left and a huge desk to the right where a man sat. On the wall straight forward were a bunch of wanting posters for different men and one woman. Melissa searched the room with new eyes as the man looked over at her. He had grey hair with a grey thick beard. A light brown hat, and some wrinkles in his face. He seemed pretty old, older than the last Sheriff at least.

"Can I help you Miss?" He asked as Melissa searched the room. She puts her hand on her gun belt while walking up to him.

"Maybe. You know Tannen? Jack Tannen?" She asked as she sat down right in front of him.

"Sounds familiar. You new in town?" He asked as he stood up, fixing some posters on the wall behind him.

"You could say that." Melissa said as she inspected him, keeping her gun close to her, just in case.

"Yeah? What's your name Miss?" He asked as he turned around. He seemed very friendly, much more friendly than the last Sheriff that's for sure. But she couldn't tell him her real name, he might know.

"Jade Winchester." She lied, even though she liked that name much more than her real name.

The Sheriff smiled a friendly smile as he nodded and sat down again.

"Nice to meet you Miss Winchester, I'm Sheriff Shane Eastwood." He said as he reached out his hand to shake hers. Melissa looked at his hand for a while, considering if she should shake it or not. Eventually she grabbed it, light. Being friendly with a Sheriff wasn't her strong side anymore. Even when he hadn't done anything.

"So, Tannen?" She asked, looking utterly serious into his eyes. He looked back with a confused expression on her.

"Why you asking for him? You a bounty hunter?" He asked.

"I might be. None of your business. Just tell me if you know something about him or not." She said, with anger in her voice. She was tired of the small talk with everyone, she just wanted to know where he was so she could put a bullet in his head.

"Now is that a nice way to talk to a Sheriff. You better watch your tone." He said, his smile gone.

"Well you better watch your back, Sheriff Eastwood." She said, tired of everyone.

Sheriff Eastwood looked serious at her, with cold eyes. But then, his smile appeared again on his lips and he laughed a little. Melissa was confused, was he mad? Why was he laughing?

"I'll tell you, with an attitude like that, you must be a bounty hunter." He laughed while he pointed at her. Melissa was still confused but smiled a little bit. She sort of liked this guy, just a bit.

"But trust me when I say that Jack Tannen is one, completely gone, two, extremely dangerous, and three, no one has seen him for years, he could be dead for all we know. Just...Here, take this instead." He said while he handed her a wanted poster with a man on it, belonging to a gang east of town. Melissa looked at the bounty, it was defiantly not the hunt she was after.

"Sorry Sheriff, but I'm going after Tannen, with our without your help." She said while she puts back the poster on the desk.

"Just tell me why?" He asked as he sat down once again. Melissa looked out the window, thinking of her parents, thinking of James, how she missed all of them.

"He stole something I held very dear. I attend to get back on him." She said as she looked at the Sheriff. "Now, either you help me, or stop wasting my time." She said, pointing towards him. He shrouded his shoulders while he opened up a drawer under the desk. He grabbed a poster that was rarely intact. Almost the whole thing was broken, but it was clear enough for Melissa.

"This is everything I know." He said and handed her the poster. It contained a picture on a man, it was the same man she had seen that night. The same man that had scared her. The same man whose laugh echoed in her nightmares. The scarred man, she remembered him clear as day. The text over the picture read, JACK TANNEN, WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE. Some old text under the picture that told where he had last been seen and what crimes he was wanted for. He was wanted for mostly murder, but also illegal money leading and train robberies. Melissa touched the poster with relief. It was the first lead in days, finally she could go after something.

Sheriff Eastwood looked at her as she tucked the poster away into her smaller satchel and stood up. She tilted her hat towards him and thanked him while she walked towards the door.

"Miss Winchester?" He said as Melissa held her hand on the doorknob. She looked back at him.

"Be careful and if you find him. Bring him back here, I would love to spit in his eye before he hung." He said while he gave her a smile. She nodded as she walked out. There was no way she would bring him back here if she finds him, no, this hunt was hers and she had no plans on taking him alive, nor bringing him back to town.

She would tear him apart, and make him suffer, just like she had suffered. While mounting Belle she gave a last glance into the Sheriff's office where he was sitting. Then she gave Belle a gentle kick as she rode out of town, and her hunt for justice had begun and was far from over.
