3: The New Kid Gets Humiliated

I checked on Percy's bunk inside Cabin 11 like Chiron asked me to.

When I first walked in, I saw a few campers trying to leave a tack on one kid's bed. The Hermes kids were tricksters, so I wasn't surprised. I gave them my best glare and they quickly picked it up, not making eye contact with me. Good. I might be small, but I'm tough.

I decided to wait until Percy arrived to make sure everything was in order. I sat on a bench outside Cabin 11 reading my new architecture book. I loved to build and create, just like my mother, Athena. This book was about Greek columns and their various supports. It was fascinating.

I was interrupted soon after by Chiron and Percy coming down the path. I looked up as they approached and caught Percy trying to read the cover of my book. It seemed as if his dyslexia got in the way because he squinted his eyes and shook his head in a funny way. He saw that I had seen his confusion and quickly blushed before turning towards Chiron.

"Annabeth," Chiron said, "I have master's archery class at noon. Would you take Percy from here?"

"Yes, sir." I said, standing up and closing my book.

"Cabin eleven," Chiron said to Percy, gesturing to the door. "Make yourself at home."

I waited for Percy to enter before following behind him. He seemed to be in awe of the building as he stared up above the doorway, his mouth open as he stayed rooted in front of the door.

Chiron poked his head in and the campers bowed to him. "Well, then," he said. "Good luck, Percy. I'll see you at dinner." He galloped away.

"Well?" I prompted. "Go on." He was taking forever to get in the cabin.

Finally, he took a step inside, tripping in the process. Some of the other campers snickered, but said nothing because they knew I would have something to say about it. I sighed at how bad he was at making a first impression. I mean, he could at least try to not act like a fool.

"Percy Jackson," I announced, liking the way his name rolled off my tongue, "Meet Cabin Eleven."

"Regular or undetermined?" Someone asked.

I answered. "Undetermined."

Truly, I had no idea what to make of Percy. He seemed to have a powerful aura, one that I had sensed that first night on the porch. But other than that, I had no indication of which god may be his parent. I guess I would just have to wait and see.

Everybody groaned at my response. The Hermes cabin had to take in all new campers because Hermes is the god of travelers. It makes sense, but their cabin is always overcrowded.

I looked around and my eyes landed on Luke.

Luke. He and I have a long history. He saved my life. He has blue eyes, sandy blond hair, and a long scar on his cheek from his recent fight with a drakon. He's kind, honest, brave... and no, I don't have a crush on him! I don't know why everybody thinks that. He'll never think of me as anything more than a little sister anyways.

Luke came forward and smiled at Percy. "Now, now, campers. That's what we're here for. Welcome, Percy. You can have that spot on the floor, right over there."

"This is Luke," I explained, my voice sounding 3 octaves higher. I quickly glanced at Percy to see if he noticed how embarrassed I was. I'll admit it: I do have a crush on Luke. But as I said, it's pointless and will never work out. Percy looked at me funny and I quickly hardened my nervous expression and voice. "He's your counselor for now."

"For now?" Percy asked.

"You're undetermined," Luke explained patiently. "They don't know what cabin to put you in, so you're here. Cabin eleven takes all newcomers, all visitors. Naturally, we would. Hermes, our patron, is the god of travelers."

I nodded. Percy looked around the space, probably wondering what he had gotten himself into.

"How long will I be here?" Percy asked.

"Good question," Luke said. "Until you're determined."

"How long will that take?"

The campers all laughed. Percy was starting to humiliate himself by asking so many questions. The Hermes kids would tease him constantly after this.

"Come on," I said. "I'll show you the volleyball court." Anything to get him out of here and stop him from making himself look like a complete loser.

"I've already seen it." Percy said, clearly not getting my intent.

"Come on." I grabbed his wrist and dragged him outside. I could hear the kids of cabin eleven laughing behind me. This new kid was going to have to learn how things worked around here.
