2: You Drool When You Sleep

I spent the next two days nursing the mysterious boy back to life.

For the first few hours, I sat by his bedside reading my architecture book. It was a gift from my mom along with my Yankees cap when I turned 12. When I wasn't reading, I was feeding him nectar and ambrosia.

On the second night, I was smirking as I wiped off the ambrosia off his chin with the spoon, the same as I had done every time he failed to swallow it. Suddenly, he opened his eyes and stared at me, confused. I quickly jumped at the opportunity to question him.

"What will happen at the winter solstice?" I demanded. I had figured out tiny details from overhearing conversations, and I now know that the solstice would bring some major event. I also knew that something was stolen, but not what or by whom.

"What?" He croaked out.

I quickly checked the infirmary to make sure no one was around, especially Chiron or Mr. D. They would kill me if they found out I was still snooping. "What's going on? What was stolen? We've only got a few weeks!" Time was running out.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled, his eyes glazing over. "I don't..."

I heard a knock at the door and quickly shut him up with another spoonful of pudding. I looked up to see Argus enter. He nodded at me, telling me he would take over for the night.

"Thanks, Argus." I said as I put down the bowl and left the infirmary. I would have to wait until tomorrow for more answers.

The next morning Chiron called me to the Big House to welcome the boy. I still didn't know his name, but maybe I would find out today.

I leaned on the porch rail beside Chiron and Mr. D as we watched Grover and the boy approach. They looked a lot healthier than when they had arrived. The boy wasn't as beat up looking, all thanks to me, of course.

"That's Mr. D" I heard Grover whisper to the boy as they came closer. "He's the camp director. Be polite. The girl, that's Annabeth Chase. She's just a camper, but she's been here longer than just about anybody. And you already know Chiron..."

Grover and the boy stopped in front of us. The boy seemed to recognize Chiron and said "Mr. Brunner!"

What? Oh, that must have been his undercover teacher name.

Chiron turned to the boy and smiled. "Ah, good, Percy. Now we have four for pinochle"

Percy. Was his full name Perseus, like the ancient hero? Probably. That's a pretty legendary name.

I was lost in my thoughts until I heard Chiron call my name. "Annabeth?"

I came forward and Chiron introduced us. He gestured to me before addressing Percy. "This young lady nursed you back to health, Percy. Annabeth, my dear, why don't you go check on Percy's bunk? We'll be putting him in cabin eleven for now."

I nodded. "Sure, Chiron."

I looked at Percy again. He was clutching his jagged horn in his hand and I realized it was the horn of the minotaur he had defeated before entering camp. He must have been really brave to achieve that.

I glanced back at his face. He was staring at me with his wide green eyes like he didn't know what to make of me. Well, neither did I. I decided to give him the honest truth.

"You drool when you sleep."

I didn't wait to see his reaction as I sprinted off down the lawn.
