Chapter 20

*Alex's POV*
"Soph come on! We need to leave!" I yell up the stairs. "Alright alright I'm ready. You don't have to yell you know," she says, making her way down the stairs. "You don't have to wait until we need to leave to get ready you know," I shoot back. She sticks her tongue out at me, unimpressed with my response.

"What am I gonna do without my two girls here?" Servando asks. "Oh please. I know you're not that upset about us being gone. You're probably gonna invite the guys over as soon as we leave," I chuckle. "I'm gonna be sooo lost without you. Might just have to keep you here," he says as he goes in for a kiss.

"Ew. Seriously I don't need to see you guys getting up on each other," Sophia groans as she makes her way out of the house. I laugh as she leaves then return my attention to Servando. "I better get going. The last thing I need is to be late to camp," I say and then peck him on the lips.

"You ready to go?" I ask Sophia as I get settled into the car. She continues looking at her phone and completely ignores my question. I quickly grab her phone out of her hands which startles her. "Are you even listening to anything I'm saying? What are you doing on your phone anyways? You've barely stopped looking at it since starting school," I say. "Alex stop. Give it back," she pleads while trying to grab it from my hands.

I notice a couple of texts appear and see that Tucker is the one who sent them. "Oh does Tucker have something to do with it? You like him don't you?" I smirk. "Can you stop?" she huffs. "Relax. I'm just messing around with you," I say handing her phone back. She doesn't respond which makes me believe I may have upset her.

...

We arrived at O'Hare International Airport late Friday evening as it only takes a few hours to get to Chicago. Sophia was still giving me the cold shoulder after I had teased her about Tucker earlier in the day. I checked us into the hotel that the team was staying at and then the two of us made our way to our room.

"Are you still mad at me?" I ask Sophia as I unpack my suitcase. She mumbles something but it's not loud enough for me to hear it. I walk over and remove the headphones from her head so that she has to talk to me. "Hey!" she says in frustration. "Will you talk to me, please?" I sigh. "There's nothing to talk about," she says, still dismissing me. "There clearly is," I press. "I'm not mad. I just don't want to be teased about Tucker," she explains. "Noted. Won't happen again," I apologize and then walk away.

...

I'm awoken in the middle of the night by the sound of talking. I rub the sleep from my eyes and then look around the room. I realize the sound is coming from Sophia and quickly switch the lamp on.

'She must be having another one of those nightmares.'

The talking becomes louder as she begins to thrash in her bed. Suddenly, her eyes snap open and she begins to panic. I watch as she grips her chest in an attempt to force air into her lungs. I immediately throw the blankets off of me and make my way over to her.

Her fear-filled eyes look at me as she wipes the sweat from her forehead. I place my hands softly on either side of her face and try to help her calm down. "Hey it's okay. It was just a dream. You're safe," I soothe. "Alex I ca- I can't breathe," she stutters. I hold her hands above her head and get her to match my breathing. After a few minutes, she's able to calm down, but is still shaken up.

"You okay now?" I ask, still feeling concerned. "No," she whispers. I see her expression change as tears begin to fill her eyes. My heart breaks seeing her so upset. I wish I could take away the pain and fear that she's feeling. "Come on. Let's go for walk," I say extending my hand out to her. "But it's 4am," she says slightly confused. "I know. Bring a blanket," I tell her.

...

The two of us make our way through the hotel and out to the outdoor pool. I lead us over to one of the lounge chairs and take a seat. I pat the chair and she gladly sits down with me. She turns her back towards me and then leans back against my chest. I wrap my arms loosely around her and rest my cheek against her head.

"Thank you," she says just loud enough for me to hear. "For what?" I ask. "For taking care of me. And for letting me come to camp with you," she says. "I wouldn't thank me just yet. I may have mentioned to Jill that you're trying out for your soccer team at school. And she wants you to practice with us tomorrow," I say carefully. "I don't know whether to be excited, mad, or nervous," she says. I let out a laugh and hug her a little tighter.

...

"Alex... Alex wake up," I hear faintly as someone shakes my shoulder. I begrudgingly open my eyes to see Julie standing there. "Did you guys sleep out here all night?" she asks slightly concerned. "No we came out around 4am. We must've fallen asleep," I say looking down at a still sleeping Sophia. I say her name a few times which causes her to stir. "As long as you guys are okay. I just wanted to let you know that breakfast is starting in a few," she chuckles. I nod in understanding and she makes her way back inside. "Come on. Can't be late for team breakfast," I say nudging Sophia.

Everyone is in line getting food from the buffet when we walk in. "Good of you to finally join us," Pinoe says with a cheeky smile plastered on her face. She pulls Sophia into a hug which she gladly excepts. "Listen if you ever need to get away from this one, you come see in Seattle," Pinoe tells Sophia while pointing over at me. "Please don't encourage my kid to run away to Seattle," I say unimpressed. Pinoe throws her hands up before backing away with a smile on her face.

...

"Ladies, remember the bus rolls out to the training facility at noon. Don't be late otherwise practice will be hell for you," Jill announces before we leave the dining room. "We've got three hours to kill so you're coming with us," I hear someone say before watching Sonnett and Mal run off with Sophia.

"Yeah sure just steal my kid," I say shaking my head. "Don't worry about her Alex. You're spending the morning with your two best friends," Allie says as her and Kelley throw their arms around me. "Ugh I missed you girlies," I sigh with happiness.

...

*Sophia's POV*
I sprint towards the hotel entrance to catch the bus with Mal, Rose, Lindsey, and Sonnett. I spot Alex as I walk down the aisle of the bus and she smiles. "I saved you a seat," she says patting the seat next to her. "Actually, is it cool if I sit with them," I ask hoping she won't mind. Her smile falls slightly, but she nods to let me know that it's fine.

"So are you ready for this practice?" Lindsey asks as I sit down next to Rose. "Not at all. I'm totally out of shape. I don't even know why Alex had to bring up my try out," I say slightly annoyed. "Don't worry Squishy. You'll be fine... after the beep test," Sonnett says. "Wait what's the beep test?" I ask curiously. That question causes them to giggle which only increases my anxiety. "Alex totally owes me for this," I mumble.

...

"Alright team circle up," Dawn yells. Alex slings her arm around my shoulder as we stand there listening to Dawn talk. "This is the first camp of the year so much of what we'll be doing is evaluation assessments. You guys know the drill. Everybody on the end line and we'll get this beep test started," she says clapping her hand against the clipboard.

I nervously take a spot on the end line next to Alex, Kelley, and Allie. The first beep sounds and we all take off towards the other end line. After the first ten rounds, I already want to quit. My legs feel weak and I get more winded with each round. Even so, I push myself to keep going. Some start pulling out after 25 rounds, but I want to reach at least round 30 before I back out. "You're doing great, but don't push yourself to keep going if you can't," Alex says while placing a hand on my shoulder. I shrug her hand off and reclaim my spot on the line.

I end up outdoing myself and make it 34 rounds in total. I collapse on the ground next to Ashlynn who then hands me a water bottle. "Nice job kid," she says patting me on the back. "Thanks," I respond still trying to catch my breath. Kelley is the last one to tap out of the beep test finishing after 57 rounds. "Nice job Kel," Alex says sticking out her hand. "Alright ladies everyone up and get moving to the weight room," Dawn instructs.

'This is gonna be a long day'

...

We finish out practice with an 11 v 11 scrimmage. This was by far my favorite part of practice, but it didn't seem to go well for Alex. She was struggling and wildly inconsistent which is unlike her. I could see that she was becoming increasingly frustrated. She tosses a water bottle against the bench and it explodes.

"I don't want to talk about it. Just let me be" she says before walking away. "Alright so we're in a bad mood I see," I mumble before grabbing my stuff and walking towards the bus.

...

"So what was going on with you earlier?" I ask Alex as we walk into our hotel room. "I don't want to talk about it," she says. "Look you were just having an off day. It's not a big deal. Tomorrow will be better," I tell her. "Look I said I don't want to talk it," she says before slamming the bathroom door. "Whatever," I huff and walk out of the room.
