Chapter five: Fake family

"What are we going to do now?" Jay asked.

Sunghoon sat on the couch, head in hands, and Jungwon sang along to the Keroro theme song.

"I'm thinking," Sunghoon said.

"I have an idea!" Jay said.

"I will not let you kill a child, Jay," Sunghoon said.

"I no longer have an idea."

"Assh- buttface!" Sunghoon said, throwing a couch cushion at Jay,"the fact that you even considered it."

Jungwon gasped.

"What's wrong?" Sunghoon asked, two sets of eyes on the toddler.

"Papa!" Jungwon turned to Sunghoon, eyes sparkling."What's that?"

Sunghoon and Jay glanced at the TV, an advert for a daycare was playing.

"Am advert for a kindergarten..." Jay said, locking eyes with Sunghoon.

"Kindergarten!" Sunghoon said, eyes widening "Jungwon!" Sunghoon turned to the toddler,
"Do you want to go there?"

"What's kindergarten?" Jungwon tilted his head.

"It's a place with lots of little kids just like you! They have so many toys there too and a lot of books!" Sunghoon explained.

"Papa, can I go there?" Jungwon pleaded.

"Of course!" Sunghoon said.

"And how are you going to get a child that isn't legally yours into kindergarten with the illegal jobs we have." Jay pointed out.

Sunghoon deflated, hands falling on his side.

"On second thought, maybe school isn't the best idea."

"But papa," Jungwon turned to Sunghoon, tears already welling up in his eyes. "I want to have friends."

Sunghoon sighed and sank deeper into the couch.

"We could forge some documents." Jay suggested.

"Forgery?" Sunghoon considered it. It wouldn't be right.

Jungwon looked at Sunghoon with wide puppy eyes.

They aren't good people anyway.

"Let's get you into kindergarten!" Sunghoon smiled, clapping his hands.

Jungwon's smile widened. Sunghoon pulled out his laptop and started typing aggressively.
Jungwon peered into the laptop from behind Sunghoon.

"What's papa doing?" Jungwon asked.

"He's committing a crime to-"

"Jay..."

"He's lying on-"

"Jay!"

"He's getting you into school." Jay said, defeated.

Jungwon squealed.

"I'll go there and make so many friends!" Jungwon enthused, and Sunghoon couldn't help but giggle along.

"That's our boy!" Sunghoon said proudly.

"You mean your boy." Jay corrected.

"Just for that, I'm putting down his name as Park Jungwon."

"Park Jungwon!" The toddler said.

"Park?" Jay asked.

"Yeah, we can't have him use Yang anymore."

"Using my family name could be dangerous. We should maybe use yours."

"I don't have a family name." Sunghoon shrugged."Guess I should go with Park Sunghoon too. It'll be easier to explain."

"We're not married!" Jay protested.

"Right, I'll forge a fake marriage document too."

"You're not listening to me, Sunghoon!" Jay said, "Let's not use Park. We'll be in big trouble."

"There are many other Parks in Korea. Don't worry about it." Sunghoon waved it off.

"Like the one in front of our house!" Jungwon said excitedly, making Sunghoon laugh.

"No baby, that's a different kind of park." The blond chuckled.

Sunghoon explained to a confused Jungwon, "I'm talking about surnames. From now on, your name is not Yang Jungwon, it's Park Jungwon."

"Park Jungwon!" The toddler said, sparkly-eyed.

Jay watched as Sunghoon pinched Jungwon's cheeks and enthused about what a good boy the toddler was.

"Alright, whatever. Do what you want." Jay mumbled, "What do I care."

"There we go. One happy family!"

-

"What are your occupations?" The woman at the daycare asked.

"Our occupations?" Sunghoon stuttered, "well um-"

Sunghoon turned to look at Jay, who snorted and looked away.

"We're um-"

"Papas go boom boom!" Jungwon answered instead.

Sunghoon chuckled nervously.

"Jungwonie-"

"Sunghoon papa is a hitman, and Jay papa is an as- assashin!" Jungwon continued.

"It's assassin, Jungwon," Jay corrected.

"Don't correct him!" Sunghoon slapped the back of his partner's head.

"Excuse me?" The interviewer interrupted.

"I'm sorry!" Sunghoon bowed. "Jungwon is an imaginative kid. He's just talking about a game we play."

"Oh, I see." The woman squinted her eyes, "So what were you saying your occupations are?"

"We are social workers of sorts." Sunghoon said.

"That's nice." The interviewer nodded and wrote something down. Sunghoon gulped. This wasn't going so well.

"And what are your hobbies?" The interviewer asked Jungwon, who thought for a long moment.

"Watching Jay papa play Mario Kart and," the child trailed off, glancing at Sunghoon. This wasn't looking good for him. "I watch papa hoon do forgeries!"

"Forgeries?" The interviewer turned to look at Sunghoon.

"He's just playing around, anyways we need to get going now. I am so sorry for taking up your time. Thank you, and have a nice day!"

Sunghoon rambled, carrying Jungwon and grabbing Jay with him.

He did not look back until they were a few miles away from the kindergarten.

"That went well." Jay deadpanned.

"You didn't do shizzle in there!" Sunghoon said, "Why didn't you back me up, man?"

"This is not my problem." Jay shrugged."I woke up today thinking I could play some video games and order pizza."

Sunghoon groaned and turned his attention to Jungwon.

"And you!" He calmed himself down with a few deep breaths, crouching down to the toddler's level, "Jungwonie, don't say things like that, okay?"

"Say things like what?" Jungwon asked, blinking up at him.

"Like um..." If he said anything now, Jungwon would most likely just repeat it to the next set of interviewers. Sunghoon needed to be tactful about this.

"Yo," Jay pulled him out of his thoughts by kicking at him lightly. "You got lost in Sunghoon land again."

Sunghoon glared up at the other and turned his attention back to Jungwon.

"How about when we go to the next school, you just agree with whatever papa says, alright?"

"Okay!" Jungwon excited.

"Good! Now there's a school down here. Let's go." Sunghoon said, pulling Jay by the arm in case he tried to escape again.

-

"So what's your name and age?" The interviewer asked.

"Ya- Park Jungwon, I'm four years old." Jungwon said.

"I'm Park Sunghoon, twenty-three years old." Sunghoon followed.

"Thank you for that." The interviewer smiled."I only wanted to know Jungwon's, but now I know the two of us are the same age!"

Sunghoon flushed, and Jay snickered.

"I'm Jake, I'm one of the teachers here." The interviewer introduced himself. "May I know what your occupations are?"

"We're sort of like social workers." Sunghoon said, more practiced now from their previous interviewer.

"That's right!" Jungwon nodded.

"And both of you work?" Jake asked.

"Yeah," Sunghoon said, glancing at Jay, who was mindlessly fiddling with the corner of the table.

"My papas work very hard!" Jungwon said, and then in a low voice, "and they don't do anything illegirl."

Oh no.

Jake tilted his head, and Sunghoon chuckled nervously, feeling a brooding sense of deja vu.
"He likes to play make pretend games with us." Sunghoon tried to clarify, and Jake nodded understandingly.

"It's sweet that you both make time to be with your son even though you're probably so busy with work." Jake said.

"Well, you know, children always come first." Sunghoon said.

"I agree!" Jungwon nodded happily. Not now, kid. Sunghoon wanted to cry.

"No worries, we'll take good care of your son here while you work." Jake reassured.

Both Jay and Sunghoon perked up at this.

"So Jungwon can go to school here?" The blond beamed.

"Of course, you seem like a lovely couple, and Jungwon is very smart." Jake said, Jungwon giggled at the compliment.

Jay and Sunghoon flustered at the word couple, meeting each other's gaze and hastily looking away. Jake noticed and let a smile slip.

"He can start on Monday." The teacher said.

"Thank you so much!" Sunghoon bowed, Jay following his actions.

"Now Jungwon, when you come to kindergarten, you shouldn't miss your papas too much." Jake addressed the toddler.

"I won't miss papas because I will go back home to them, right?" Jungwon asked, directing his wide eyes at Sunghoon.

"That's right!" Sunghoon said, bopping Jungwon's nose. Jay looked at them, a small smile slipping past his facade.

"You really like your papas, huh?" Jake noted.

"Of course!" Jungwon enthused, pulling both Jay and Sunghoon closer by hooking his hands around their arms. "My papas are the best!"

Sunghoon melted right there, and Jay's heart began to thaw.
