Memory 4 | Malfoy's Demeanour Slips

Malfoy's Demeanour Slips

Everyone heads to the Great Hall for lunch. I collect some books that I'll be using to study for my exams from the library. All the things I'm planning to study buzz in my mind, and I can not focus on just one.
The memory of last month suddenly flashes into my brain. I stand, horrified, remembering everything, sinking into the past. That's what has happened...

I sat serenely on my bed, sleep deserting me. I got used to my chaotic sleeping schedule that doesn't even happen to exist. I scribbled down words onto a parchment paper, to get them in mind. Recalling that I have an unfinished project due tomorrow has caused sleep to wholly abandon me.

I suddenly heard footsteps that appeared to come from the boys' dorms. It was 2 a.m. Who would be staying up that late other than me? I got up, silently, and followed the footsteps.

A boy's white-blond hair showed between the dark, due to the light that was flickering from the tip of his wand like a torch. I hid behind a column that stood in the midst of the place. I observed him climbing the moving stairs. I continued following him when he seemed to disappear into the upper floor until we reached the seventh one.

He proceeded to the corridor that leads to the Room of Requirement. I recalled the place because we, the DA used to practice there. How did he possibly find it?

I kept hiding until he was gone, then rebegan chasing him. I managed to enter before the ginormous door vanished away, focusing on my destination.

The room looked different from what I expected. It was crowded with objects, and creepy sounds flew in the air, trailing goosebumps down my body.

I carefully moved so I don't bump into something and make any noise. The place is huge, therefore he doesn't notice my presence. The room was surrounded by burning goblets, I was able to see everything. He stood in front of a tall cabinet that was draped in a blanket. He took it off. I could hardly decipher what he was doing.
"Harmonia Nectere Passus," his whispers flew in the air.
Then, he sluggishly opened the cabinet's door. I stared at the look of disbelief he carried on his face.
"Damn it!" he said through gritted teeth.

I later decided to go to the library, and on my way, I seized the image of the cabinet in my mind so it doesn't flee, and constantly uttered the words he was using so they don't slip under my tongue.
Upon my arrival, I observed the categorised shelves of books. A thick book between the others attracted my attention.
The title "Extraordinary Objects" was written in golden letters on the book's spine. Its leather cover made a smooth sound beneath the touch of my hand. I fluttered through the sheets of it, eager to find any clue of what could possibly this cabinet be.
Chapter 23

Vanishing cabinets
(Below the title was the picture of the cabinet)
A pair of Vanishing Cabinets can work as a passage between two places. If an object was placed in one, it'll appear in the other.
Repairing a broken Vanishing Cabinet:
The incantation of a charm is used to fix a broken Vanishing Cabinet:
"Harmonia Nectere Passus."
Repairing a broken vanishing cabinet is difficult, a professional person is required to fix it, while for an unqualified person, it's impossible.

I returned back to the dorms, feeling concerned. I gripped the book from its spine as I rolled up in bed to sleep. I was willing to tell the Golden Trio, and some members of the DA about what I have seen and concluded.

The next day, the book was gone. I looked for it everywhere, and I couldn't find it.
I then told them, no one agreed except Harry Potter. The rest are certain that Draco couldn't be a Death Eater.

***
I dump the pile of books on the Slytherin table as I sit on my chair. Draco Malfoy sits across from me, his arms crossed, wearing his wafer thin white school shirt. He desperately stares at the food in his plate.

I start to read and eat simultaneously. Yet it's hard, my eyes hurt, I can only read blurred letters. I try my best to clearly read the words with narrow eyes.

A sudden ring of a cup hits my ears. I look away from the book I am holding between my hands and notice the others soaked in water, as though a sea wave has ran over them. The tiny creek streams towards Malfoy, wetting his left arm. He instantly grabs it, "Couldn't you pay attention to how you're moving!" he says with rage, addressing the first year boy who just dropped his water cup.

"Calm down Malfoy, It's ok," Theo says.

Draco's face blenches, like he is taking a brief glance at his death in the future. He gets out, and I do the same, walking down the hallway to the girls' lavatory to dry the books that just got drenched.

There are cries. Cries that are vexingly poking into my ears. I take my eyes off of the books and notice that I just set foot into the boy's bathroom.

Draco has been standing, his face half turned to the wall. He howls and cries, wildly rubbing his left arm with a mini towel moistened with blood.

"It's not getting off!" He yells in a weak voice. "If somebody knows, he'll cease my life."
I search for whom he's talking with.

"No problem... try to cover it," Moaning Myrtle says.
He then throws the piece of fabric in the rubbish bin. He lets out running water from the faucet and rinses his bloody arm.

"It will never work," he rumble, clenching the sides of the sink strongly.
I accidentally drop one of the books. It falls to the floor, creating a huge noise. I hastily dart out of the place.

Though it's too late, he already saw me. We stand facing each other in the hallway outside. He shoots death stares at me, resting his right arm on the top of his head.

I can't stand his arm bleeding, "You should go to Madame Pomfrey. Why did you even do that?" I say in a thick voice.

I am not prepared for what he might say, I look at the corner of my eyes.
He lowers the sleeve of his white shirt and covers his arm. I peep at a dark mark drawn on it. It is a skull with a serpent slithering into it, but it's just a mark, it doesn't move.

"What were you doing in there?" He asks with a low voice.

Something inside of me twists like someone is stirring it with a spoon. "What's that on your arm? A Dark Mark?" I say in a loud tone because it was the only thing that came to mind.
Someone passes by.

"Shhhhh," he whispers.

He furiously steers me into a dark hallway. Sunlight beams out from the arched shaped windows that are found behind the arcades, painting yellow shadows across the floor.

"Swear you won't tell anyone of what you saw," he says with a shaking voice.

"I might tell Dumbledore," I say. A feeling makes me step backwards.
He pulls out his wand and points it in front of my face. I whip out mine too.

"You dare tell Dumbledore."

I realize that threatening him is non-essential and risky.

"Don't let -" he says, but I leave him in middle-sentence.

"What can you do? Will you hit me with a cursive spell, or hex me just like how you did to Katy?" I say bitterly. "Dangerous, huh?"

He looks at me, staying unspoken for a few minutes.
"You're being so childish, Greengrass,

I won't do it," he stammers with feeble sobs, lowering his wand.

It takes a little while to let his last words sink into my mind.

Draco looks destroyed, his eyes are bloodshot, and the circles under them are purple. He turns and leaves, his back hatched. Blood trickles from the hem of his left sleeve, tracing his path as he starts to disappear through the hall. That's the first time I see him on a high level of weakness.
What if he's remorseful about being a Death Eater? What if he's replaced instead of his father? But You-Know-Who have been recently helping his servants who are in Azkaban prison to break out, Why is then Lucius Malfoy still in jail? I don't understand.

When I flick my wand over the floor, the traces of blood disappear.
