Chapter 23: Home

Hi! I'm excited because of the 10k reads, AWSOME!

I would like it if you texted or commented on some suggestions for future chapters. Maybe something interesting that goes no if your life. It would be much appreciated and really thank you for reading!

Getting up from the ground, Jaylin found her phone lying next to her. Taking a second to register her dream, she didn't understand what was happening until the phone rang. Waiting a few seconds, she picked it up.

"Jaylin! I've been trying to reach you for the past few hours. Since the people started disappearing and reappeared 6 hours ago, there have been many accidents." So her dream might have been reality? She wondered. "I couldn't contact you so I thought that you disappeared too. We need all the help we can get at the hospital," Toni's hurried voice rushed out of her phone.

Jaylin, somewhere in between his long and fast debrief, had gotten her keys and was on her motorcycle driving towards the hospital. "What's the situation?" She asked through the phone.

"Many people came because of crashes. Hours ago, half the doctors disappeared so we were short-handed," Toni told her. "No, hey! He needs immediate surgery, ya ass!"

"There's no one to perform it," the resident spoke. "Every doctor's unavailable."

Jaylin, still on the way ordered Toni hearing their conversation, "prepare the surgery room." No response from the other side. "TONI!" She shouted to get his attention.

"Yes," anxiety and panic were present in his voice.

"Prepare a surgery room. Get that resident whoever it at the front desk. You work as my first assistant," she ordered parking the motorcycle underground.

"Yes!" Toni responded, "the patient has TBI (traumatic brain injury). We're in the operation room Dr. Filipe usually operates in." With that Toni hung up and Jaylin took off her helmet.

Quickly taking off her clothes and changing them, washed her hands and forearms, dried them with paper, and then finally ran towards the operating room. Jaylin's hands were stretched out, the nurses slipped the scrubs on her, while another nurse helped put on the gloves.

"Start the surgery," Jaylin announced.

Toni started applying disinfectant on the surface of the patient's skull, Jaylin started the incision. Flipping the skin over, Toni started to clean the blood on the skull. Making four burr holes, on the skill using the drill, she carefully used a bone saw to cut them out and removed them for another assistant to assemble with titanium plates and screws. Underneath the bone flap was epidural blood which Toni helpfully sucked allowing a clear view of the epidural space. Placing a drain in the space is then secured by going through the incision. Jaylin then places the bone flap back and screws it in place. The skin flap is flipped back and closed with staples, which in the surgeon's opinion is the most satisfying part.

This whole procedure took about 2 and a half hours, faster than usual. Once they came out of the surgery room, most were sweating.

"Toni, how many more patients are in for this surgery?"

"Around ten, why?" He asked still slightly disturbed by the surgery taking place.

"I'll take another 5, prepare the next operation room," she ordered walking towards the next room.

"W-what?" Toni asked hesitantly.

"Next surgery, fast. The patients can't wait," she spoke firmly.

Ah, she's crazy, the guy thought nonetheless following behind her while calling the next room about the change of plans. "This is Toni from the general surgery department. Dr. Todd is taking over, so you guys can focus on more serve accidents."

And so, for the next 11 hours, Jaylin kept on doing 3 more surgeries than planned. The first assistants were switching every operation change because they needed rest.

"Are we done now?" Jaylin asked sliding down the wall outside of the operation room.

Toni checked his iPad for the information instead of going to the front desk. "You taking over other surgeons' surgeries and finishing them faster than expected, has reduced the pool of patients, so overall, it's qu- calm, for now."

Jaylin, tired from all the surgeries, staying awake, drinking coffee, young body even if it was just a few years. She let out a relieved "Good to be back again," she commented. "Also, be careful, don't say the Q word."

"Welcome back boss!" They all shouted, especially Toni as he went and threw himself at her.

As if doing breakdance, Jaylin slammed her hand on the ground, lifting her leg, connecting it with a roundhouse kick, and sent the doctor backward. "THE FUCK DO YOU WANT?!"

"WELCOME BACK REAL BOSS!" Those motherfuckers shouted once more, louder than Jaylin was. In the end, everyone except Danny had visible bumps on their heads.

"BOSS, THAT'S FAVORITISM!" The whole group whined holding their wounded heads, glaring at the unharmed man. A tick mark appeared on Jaylin's head as she raised her hand threateningly.

Danny who was on the side, -unharmed- could only sweat-drop at the group's reaction. He thought about the event once again, retracted his sweat-drop feeling her punch. Thank god he didn't laugh.

"Red hood?" Jaylin hesitantly asks staring at her brother's alter ego. Jason her brother without words nods in answer.

Still doubtful, Jaylin asks him the important question, "is Joker dead?"

Resentment and anger flash through Red hoods eyes, even if there weren't visible, "if Bats didn't stop me those years ago he would be."

"Are we in New York?"

Looking to the bedside him, there stood the Batman. Batman without a beard meaning he wasn't Thomas. Dick, was alive and in front of her. Tim Drake, not Timmothy Drake her husband, and murderous little tiny teen Robin existed.

Tears welled up in her eyes. Jason quickly went to wipe them away even if he knew she would force them down herself. "Can I get a minute?"

Jason obliged still confused more than ever the nonetheless left her in the room. Jaylin stayed on the gurney for a second, staring blankly at the wall in front of her before a tear fell. She was finally back, back where she belonged.

Her mind went through everything that had happened in the last years. Looking at her hand, she could see that her body in the other universe didn't affect the current one. She was in the body of a 19-year-old in contrast to her 24-year-old mind, which wasn't much different. She was glad to say she didn't stay shorter than Dick considering the future she experienced.

A memory resurfaced in her mind. After 5 years, she finally remembered. Throwing her legs off the gurney, she walks out the door. When the door opened, not only Jason but the whole family was there staring at her.

"Hi," she says.

Dick and Tim throw themselves at her, in a welcoming way. Jason, Cass, and Damian walked over hugging from the outer of the group hug.

"Half of the world disappeared 14 hours ago, during Christmas eve. Damian and I also disappeared. We thought you did too but we couldn't find you 5 hours later when people started reappearing. We only found only 9 hours later in the hospital when we registered into work," Dick started to speed talk like his friend Wally.

People only disappeared for 5 hours here? Jaylin mentally questioned. So not fucking cool, what were all those 3 years of my life for? A second passed when she realized what she thought, wait, what 3 years?

Later that night, Bruce talked to Jaylin in private. "Are you alright?" He was unmasked.

"Fine. My head has been hurting since this morning though. For some reason, I woke up on the floor in my apartment. Did I faint?" Jaylin responded with only her wig on, face revealed along with her heterochromia eyes.

"Do you remember what happened before you fainted?"

Jaylin took some time to think, "I remember feeling annoyed. Nothing else." She felt the tase felt something missing. Now she felt annoyed at that, so she bashed the grip onto her forehead much to Batman's surprise as he hurriedly took the gun from her. Blood dripped down from the center of her forehead, down the right side of her nose, splitting her face into two.

"What are you doing?!" Bruce asked hurriedly restraining her not knowing what she was planing with that action.

Inside Jaylin's head, it was a mess, chaotic was a synonym. Words and words appeared, 'Spiderman', 'CA', 'IM', 'Morgan', 'Black Widow', 'Hawkeye', 'Vision', 'Wanda', 'King', 'Princess', 'Avengers'. "Space, ship, Avengers, void. You sent me in a spaceship into a void. To-..." Jaylin paused trying to turn the words into sentences. "To the Avengers."

"What is 'the Avengers', Lin?" Bruce asked.

Jaylin contemplated again. Nothing came up, well unless she used the previous method. Bruce quickly stole the other pistol, "not doing it again. Report to me when you remember it naturally. No more bashing your head," he scolded.

The Bat-team then went back on watch as always. Batman didn't stop working on how half the population of the world had disappeared. He had a feeling it was related to what Jaylin had experienced considering the fact that she came much later and everyone else. Batman was busy until Selina, as Catwoman robbed a museum announcing she was back.

Batman stopped his typing, and was on the chase - he called dibs on her - while the kids dealt with other stuff.

"Selina, return those," he ordered staring at her referring to the bag.

"Not if I can help it," she said, walking towards him. She stopped when she was just a foot away. "Besides, I much prefer running into you."

He raised his eyebrows, not that it could be seen, "what do you want?"

"A night?" She requested.

"Really?" He asked for confirmation.

Her grin turned a bit feral. "Maybe. Or maybe I'm talking so you'll be too distracted enough to forget to chase me when I disappear."

"Well it's not working," he informed her with a glare.

"It isn't?" And with that, she swerved around him. And turning around he only saw her bounding up a fire escape, and disappearing.

Looking at the bag in his possession, he checked the contents. Rocks, she gave him rocks. He watched in silence for a few seconds, not quite sure what to do before a smirk became to form and he began the chase again.

Let's say that, half an hour later, he caught her. In bed.

The Batkids ears were being tortured listening to adults', more specifically their dad and girlfriend's moans and groans and whatever happens during sex for five minutes.

Red Hood kept spamming Kim to interrupt because she wouldn't get in trouble interrupting. Actually, in the group chat without Bruce, everyone was spamming Kim except those that's weren't on duty.

Through the comms, the Bat-team and Selina heard her phone ring. It was perfect timing as they had taken a rest.

"Yes?" Selina asked lust still present. It seems that Bruce liked it and started to touch her making her moan.

Kim's eyes were twitching. She started speaking, "As much you're happy with each other. Bruce uses condoms, we don't want another you. Also, when you have sex, tell Bruce to turn off his comms, fully."

She along with the other bats could hear her voice from both the comms and the phone. A second later the two communication devices trend off at the same time much to everyone's pleasure.

"Wait," Kim said through the comms that were still linked. The sudden thought emerged from her mind, a simpler and easier to deal with without suffering from both sides, "if you wanted his comms to disconnect, couldn't Red Robin just do that?"

"I'm not in the cave," Red Robin responded taking down four muggers. "Thanks, by the way, made the job less distracting."

"You have a wristwatch computer," Kim pointed out. "You know you can hack into the computer and disable their comms."

No response from the other side, Red Robin disconnected himself. Unbelievable.

Actually, none of the brothers involved, responded, or talked to Jaylin for almost two whole nights. Batman and Catwoman both avoided her entirely for a whole week because of her interruption during 'their' time.

But that didn't matter anymore, this was home, she was home.

One night, Jason came home, in front of him multiple documents were scattered across the ground. In the center, was his one and only sister. He laughed at how she just dropped down in the middle of work. He debated whether he should or should not take a picture of her awkward position. She had her arms out folded under her head, but her body was bent as if doing stretches. Deciding against the picture idea, he quietly walked towards her, and bride style picked her up and gently placed her on her bed.

While at it, being the self-proclaimed nerd he was, he planned on helping Jaylin sort the documents for the whole night. Unbeknownst to Jason, Jaylin had been awake since the first touch he made with her. She was suffering from sleep paralysis as her body was carried. She was pleasantly surprised at his gentleness and smiled.

Putting on socks and being quiet while stepping on the floor, she approached the door frame. "Hey," she said in the quiet room.

"Ah!" Shouted Jason scared at the appearance of his sister. Messy black hair and white do not mix at night. "Don't scare me like that!"

"So who put this on me?" She asked holding a puffer jacket.

Jason recovered from the slight fright and spoke without another. "I did."

"Thanks," she smiled. Jason returned the gesture. "Thought you were cold without it, do you need it?"

"No," he responded.

"So what are you doing?"

"Trying to sort out your goddamn documents. They are a headache."

Jaylin smirked, "you don't have to help. I'm awake now, I can do it."

The elder sibling stared at the younger determined. Whatever influence had over him when he entered the loft, still hadn't left. "I'll help you. I'm older," he said. "And I can't sleep either way."

For the rest of the night, the siblings sat there in the middle of the scattered documents around the loft floor, sorting out the documents from the most to least important. The youngest with the most experience helped the eldest understand what most documents talked about.

Jason, every now and then would as, "why did you choose this job?"

Jaylin didn't smile, her facial expression went cold. The same cold she held before meeting Jason. The only thing that revealed her feelings was her sad and remorseful eyes, "made bad decisions when I was... in China." Like a few years ago. "Not proud of them. I hope that, being a doctor and helping people, would you know to help me."

Jason was quiet, not knowing what to say.

They stayed quiet. The only sound that was hearable was the moving papers. Stacks and stacks of paper were made, but no word was spoken between the two.

"Oh god," Jaylin said in complete shock after months of processing. Plus she wanted to change the topic. That topic was a little too sensitive for her own taste.

Jason was immediately alert. Her transition from the first conversation to this one was too different. From cold to shock too fast, "what happened?"

She said in a whisper dramatically, "you've corrupted me."

Plain confusion appeared on Jason's face, "what?"

Pointing a blaming hand to her brother she said in a clear tone with a surprised tone still present "you've fucking successfully corrupted me. I don't do laughing outside my loft and it's usually with Leo or Luca but the fuck I've started to laugh with Roy! He's not a close friend or family but I still laughed in front of him!"

"Not laughing outside the loft and family, or even showing emotions? I noticed. That's... just plain sad." Somewhere inside him, he did not like the fact that his sister who only showed noticeable emotions and reactions mostly around family and friends, show them around Roy, the stranger.

"Good synonym describing our family," she said falling backward onto her back.

Taking less than a second of hesitation he agreed with a shrug, joining her on the floor, with the stomach facing upwards, "along with entertaining and chaotic."

They stayed together in silence for some time. "Jason?" Jaylin spoke checking if her brother was awake. Her brother hummed in response, "I'm leaving tomorrow."

Jason sat up immediately "what?! Why?!"

"I got a quick job there," she said not exactly elaborating. "Quick and fast paying. I can get a 3-day vacation too after it's done as well."

Jason looked at his sister who was still on the floor facing upwards with her eyes closed. He debated with himself. His sister never elaborated, never gave him details of what job she got. He was worried but knew she could take care of himself. There weren't any disturbances on Jaylin's face which made Jason trust her. "Stay safe," was all he had asked from her.

Hours later, Jaylin reached west of America. "Welcome to Patel mansion, may I see your invitation?" The guard asked. The guard checked out the hot blonde rich lady before checking the invitation. His brows wrinkled together, "excuse me miss, sir. but this invitation says it's for Mr. Hung."

The lady tapped her mind and remembered suddenly, "oh sorry. Hung Jilin is my father, I'm his daughter Lìnà Hung. Also, this is my partner for the party you see, Lúkǎ."

"And why has Mr. Hung not attended this party with you. We should've been informed," the guard insisted further, blocking her way of entry.

The person named Lìnà frowned her brows, "my father fell ill and sent me in his place. Do not disrespect me. You wouldn't want me to inform the Patel family of this incident would you?"

The security panicked as another came to take his place, "no, no. Apologies miss. Please enjoy your evening."

Lìnà smiled and started walking inside. "That smile is creepy," her partner told her.

"Shut up and look cute," the lady responded.

Looking at the interior, it was easy to say that it was no match for the Wayne Manor. Why was she here when there was somewhere better? Well, my friend got her to accept this assassination. Why? Well, that said friend thought it would be a great experience. Yes, assassination is a great experience for infiltration!

"Excuse me, lady, you aren't allowed on this floor," a guard tried to stop her. "Hey, did anybody call for a woman?" The guard asked another one.

"Not that I know of," the other responded.

Lìnà then started speaking casually, seeing nothing wrong in the situation currently, "I'm here to see a scumbag."

"Hi," Lúkǎ greeted the guards with his fist.

Lìnà and Lúkǎ took out the guards from outside fast enough. For the last one, Lìnà kicked the large man toward the door, breaking it down.

"What's going on?!" Someone shouted from the inside.

"We'll be taking your life. If you don't mind," Lúkǎ said licking his knife, smiling psychopathically as if he was Karma from the assassination classroom. I let him watch too much anime.

"Gavin Patel, put up a fight, please. Don't let it be boring," Lìnà's smile mirrored Lúkǎ's.

Around half an hour later, the people from the third floor were all killed. Lìnà was checking herself in the mirror. "I liked this dress," she complained. Wait, she took another look at the dress and took back her statement.

"Jaylin," Lúkǎ complained, "I miss my wife."

"When'd you get married?" The girl asked. "Oh Luca, you wanna propose."

"No!" He denied flustered, dark red was painted on his face. "So, ahem! We'll meet at the class reunion?" he asked directing the conversation other than his love life.

Jaylin smirked but didn't mention his love life again. "Probably, when was it again?" She asked.

"You're in the group chat, just check it."

"It's in my pocket."

"And?"

"It's too far."

Luca sighed. He should've expected this. "Next year, the day school ended."

"Which was...?"

"July, 1st," he sighed. "Imma head out. See ya in a few months," he said stepping over the dead bodies and avoiding the pulls of blood from multiple people.

After cleaning herself in the bathroom, changing her bloodied clothes she called her brother, staring at the headless bodies of the Patel family and some of their bodyguards, other's were knocked out, "hey Jace, just finished a job."

"Great, do you mind if I... uh," the elder brother hesitated. He wanted the conversation to continue, "you getting enough rest? Are you coming home?"

Though this time, Jaylin already left the underground parking lot and was on her way to another location. "Not really, I'm on the road right now."

"Where are you going?" He asked. On his end of the line, he had shot a drug dealer in the leg. Curse Batman for not allowing killing, the job would have been long done by now. Jaylen sat on the barstool and ordered a bottle of Vodka. "What?! Aren't you diving?! Don't drink!" Jason screamed.

"I'll call you later. Bye Jace, night," she said. His little sister just ignored his words. Nevertheless, he complied and hung up.

"Where are you?" Came Leo's worried voice from the other line,

"Oh, you know another day another assassination. The usual."

"I thought you have that up and start anew being a doctor and all."

"Desperate time means desperate measures."

"What happened?"

"Stress mostly."

"You returned to this work because of stress? You couldn't have found a psychiatrist?"

"Too much work."

"What about Bruce? Your brothers' dad, he's rich, right? He could find you one."

"Too troublesome."

"I thought you stopped since Luca's opinion on the assassinations."

"Technically, it was mercenary jobs. There is protection and killings."

"What was your code name again? 'Indifference'?"

"Haha, no. It was Ying. I wonder what Jin is doing though. The only one my age. Also, as far as I know, I never stopped killing."

"Hospital deaths don't count."

"My work is under my own jurisdiction."

"You are so not worth the trouble."

"I am so wroth more. Oh btw, Luca was with me on this mission."

"Ugh! When did you start talking like this? I want the naive little Jaylin back."

"There was no naive Jaylin just inexperienced."

"Fine, whatever I just want the old you."

"That's offensive."

"So what are you doing now?"

"At a bar, just when a horse was walking into the bar."

"Are you seriously telling the horse joke? Now?" Leo deadpanned at the other end of the line.

Jaylin watched as all the men in the bar, running out of their seats, taking their drinks leaving much money behind. They didn't seem to want to hear the joke. Snapping a picture of the horse, she sent it to her friend. "Seriously."

"A horse actually entered the bar. Money too," she heard him comment.

"Excuse me miss," a stranger's voice emerged from behind. In his hand, he held an unknown sum of money. "People don't know this since most of the time they run away, but whoever stays after the horse enters gets to keep a little of the money left behind. So here," he said handing her the money.

Jaylin smiled as she took the money willingly. "jackpot."

"Did you just get free money?"

"As I said: I hit jackpot."

Sub-Story

"Tch," Damien's tongue clicked. "Appreciated, Lin."

The woman then handed the eldest a mug with an image of [#1 detective] written on the side, he cried tears of joy.

The spectators either watched with amused expressions. In another case where Jaylin's brother watched worth confusion, she cleared up his understanding. "Should I tell him that there is small letters 'loser dildo' written in the middle of #1 and detective?"

Jason upon hearing his sister's confession looked in more detail in between those words with more focus as Dick rubbed the side of the mug on his face.

"My little sister is the best," the one named after a dildo claimed.

The second brother looked at his elder brother's satiate and snickered. "But lets him have his fun. He'll be sadder when someone else tells him."

Jaylin thought for a hit before announcing to everyone present. "Guys, since it's Christmas, I'm just singing one quick song."

Jason who was by her side shook his head afraid for his ego, "oh no."

"Jingle bells, Batman smells
Robin laid an egg
Batmobile lost a wheel
And Joker got away, hey!"

"Seriously?!" Tim asked the woman. Jason simply laughed at the lost wheel part. It made sense.

"I'm not the one embarrassed, all three of you were Robin, while this little one is Robin."

Let's just say that Jaylin was chased around the house for the night.

"Master Bruce, are you not going to join in?"

"No. I'm not that petty." Bruce smiled fondly at the siblings, "the brothers will fail, and Lin will have a punishment."

Alfred watched as Bruce planned with an obvious expression visible. He placed his hand on his forehead supporting himself. "Oh, master Bruce. Why haven't you grown up?"

"Bruce!" shouted Jaylin running towards where they were. The boys were lying on the floor and groaning because of their pain. Bruce masked his planning by smiling his business smile at her. "Yeah. Um, this was from when I was unconcious. It was next to me. It's dedicated to you," Jaylin handed over the letter

"This is my father's handwriting," Bruce opened the letter and tears fell. "Thank you," he said.

Jaylin smiled as she walked away stepping over her fallen brotehrs.

"Master Bruce?" Alfred asked.

"She did something good. Maybe, next time," he said looking at the exit before wipping the tear off. The boys on the ground wondered what Lin gave that made bruce move to tears.
