Luke's Pov

As I watch my girlfriend, Quince, laughing and joking with her friends, a sense of warmth and contentment washes over me. I've always been crazy in love with her, admiring her infectious energy and vibrant personality. But amidst the joyous atmosphere, a nagging worry gnaws at the edges of my mind.

Quince's radiant smile doesn't quite reach her eyes, and there's a subtle tension in her movements that I can't ignore. It's as if she's putting on a brave front, masking something deeper beneath the surface. I know her well enough to sense when something's wrong, even when she tries to hide it.

My gaze flickers to her chest area, where I noticed a fleeting wince earlier. It's a small detail, easily overlooked amidst the excitement of the reunion, but it sends a pang of concern through me. I wonder what could be causing her discomfort but hesitate to voice my worries, afraid of dampening the mood or making her feel self-conscious in front of her friends.

Instead, I silently observe, my mind racing with questions and scenarios. Could it be stress from work? Or perhaps she pulled a muscle during a workout? Was it from that one game? The possibilities swirl in my mind, each one accompanied by a growing sense of unease.

As the evening progresses, I find myself stealing glances at Quince whenever I think she's not looking. I study her expressions, searching for any signs of pain or discomfort. Each time she laughs or moves too quickly, I hold my breath, half-expecting her to wince again.

But Quince carries on, seemingly oblivious to my internal turmoil. She throws herself into the festivities with gusto, showering her friends with affection and laughter. I marvel at her resilience, admiring the way she effortlessly lights up the room despite whatever pain she may be feeling.

Eventually, the night draws to a close, and Sage, Connor, and Maelyn leave heading for their hotel while Italy heads to her room. I watch them go, feeling a twinge of sadness mingled with relief. As the door closes behind them, I turn to Quince, my heart heavy with concern.

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask softly, reaching out to gently touch her arm. "I couldn't help but notice... earlier, you seemed like you were in pain."

Quince's smile falters for a moment, her eyes flickering with surprise before settling into a gentle reassurance. "Oh, it's nothing, just a little tightness in my chest," she replies, her tone casual despite the underlying strain. "Probably just stress or something. I'll be fine."

But I'm not convinced. I can see past her brave facade, sensing the weight of her words beneath the surface. Without hesitation, I wrap my arms around her, pulling her close in a comforting embrace.

"I'm here for you, you know," I murmur, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "Whatever it is, we'll face it together."

Quince leans into my embrace, her body relaxing against mine.

The game against the Chicago Blackhawks had been brutal, but nothing compared to the storm brewing inside me as I made my way out of the locker room. Quince was waiting for me by my locker, her presence a soothing balm after the intensity of the game. I reassured her that I would take care of Jack; after all, he's my brother, and I couldn't let him suffer alone. He had injured his wrist during the game and he would be out for awhile.

Jack's mood was palpable the moment we stepped into the car. He was in one of his foul moods again, probably from the pain he was enduring. But I wasn't prepared for the barrage of complaints and insults that followed.

"You're treating me like a damn baby, Luke!" Jack's voice cut through the tense silence of the car.

I clenched my jaw, trying to keep my cool. "I'm just trying to help, Jack. You know that."

"Yeah, well, your help isn't what I need right now," he snapped back, his words like daggers aimed straight at my heart.

Then he went too far. He started criticizing my relationship with Quince, spewing venomous words that struck a nerve. I felt a surge of anger rising within me, a primal instinct to defend the person I lov-liked.

"You have no right to talk about Quince like that," I shot back, my voice laced with fury. "You don't know anything about us."

But Jack wouldn't relent. He kept pushing, pushing until I couldn't take it anymore. I slammed on the brakes, my hands trembling with rage as I turned to face him we had just arrived at our apartment building.

"Get out," I growled, my voice low and dangerous.

Jack's eyes widened in shock, but he didn't argue. He simply grabbed his wallet and hobbled out of the car, leaving me alone with my thoughts and a heavy weight on my chest.

I drove aimlessly for a while, trying to calm the storm raging inside me. But the anger wouldn't dissipate; it festered, gnawing at my insides until I couldn't take it any longer.

Without a second thought, I found myself parked outside the apartment buildings, heading straight for Quinces, my fists clenched at my sides as I marched up to her door. I didn't bother knocking; I simply barged inwith the key she gave me, my heart pounding in my chest as I searched for her.

Quince was in the living room, her eyes widening in surprise as she took in my disheveled appearance.

"Luke, what's wrong?" she asked, concern etched in her features. Her wet hair from the post game shower sticking to her face.

I didn't answer; instead, I crossed the room in three quick strides and pulled her into my arms, holding her tight as if she were the only thing anchoring me to reality.

"I can't do this anymore, Quince," I whispered, my voice cracking with emotion. "I can't handle Jack's constant attacks and the weight of everything else on my shoulders."

Quince held me close, her touch a soothing balm against the turmoil raging inside me. "You don't have to do it alone, Luke," she murmured, her words a gentle reminder of the support I so desperately needed.

I pressed a tender kiss to Quince's lips, I knew that no matter what obstacles lay ahead, as long as we had each other, we could overcome anything.

One night, he wakes, strange look on his face
Pauses, then says "You're my best friend"
And you knew what it was, he is in love
