Изначально планировалось написать для конкурса короткий юмористический рассказ о нашем современнике, случайно получившем волшебную вещь. Однако в ходе работы сюжет был расширен, появились новые герои, а рассказ превратился в начало серии «Странные вещи». На текущий момент в цикл вошло пять рассказов, повествующих о приключениях обычного парня, ни капли не верящего в магию, но волею случая столкнувшегося с волшебными вещами и необычными людьми. Четыре рассказа описывают по одной из современных магических вещей. Финальный завершает серию, сведя воедино героев и волшебные предметы. Стоит добавить, цикл «Странные вещи» создавался под влиянием атмосферы мира «Понедельника» братьев Стругацих.
