The wind is cold, blowing through the opening of your apartment's window. Your head sits comfortably on top of your girlfriend's lap, as your eyes flutter closeโ€”you feel sleepiness taking over. You're going to fall asleep.

Above you, Sae-byeok seems immersed in something on her phone, her hand occasionally coming to scratch your scalp gently, reminding you that she remembers you're here despite her unusual focused behavior.

You yawn a little. "What are you doing?"

She hums lowly. "Searching stuff."

Since Sae-byeok got her first paycheck, she has been acting weird. You figured she was trying to find something to spend it on now that she could finally think about her own.

"Hmmm..." you almost drift off, "Searching for what?"

"Stuff."

You feel too tired to push her for an answer and give in to sleep, allowing your body to relax entirely.

You wake up to the sunlight shining through your curtains in a way that doesn't hurt your head. It's pretty and comfortable, and you realize you're sleeping on the couch. Your head is on your most recently bought (and most comfortable) pillow, and your body is covered by a light blanket. The fan on the ceiling is spinning at a slow rhythm, the rays of sunlight bringing just the right amount of warmth into the apartment.

You blink yourself awake a bit more and stretch, deciding to begin your search for your girlfriend (as you did nearly every morning, considering she was always up before you). You took slow and lazy steps towards the kitchen to find her trying to... cook? Or something. It looked like she was cooking. At least she's trying her best to do so. She looked your way and nodded slightly.

"Hey." she said, "Slept well?"

You nodded quietly before wobbling your way into the kitchen.

"What're you makin'?"

"...Bibimbap."

"That does not look like bibimbap--"

"Listen, I'm trying." she argues, grumbling half-heartedly as her gaze stays on the food in her hands.

"I can see that," you chuckled, walking over to her until your chin was set on her shoulder. "Want any help?"

"I don't need it."

"Do you really?"

"..."

The doorbell rang, positively startling the both of you, before Saebyeok abandoned her cooking tools and walked over to the front door.

What you recognized as a delivery man's voice spoke to the girl for a bit, before the door closed back again. You stared blankly as Saebyeok moonwalked her way back into the living room in a poor attempt to hide what she got, set something on the table (hidden from your view) and walked back towards the kitchen.

You made a face.

"What are you hiding from me, Kang Sae-byeok?" you ask, smiling a bit. She shrugs casually, going back to cooking.

"Nothing you need to know."

"But I want to, though."

She sighed. I'll finish breakfast. You go... Do whatever you feel like doing, or something. I'll show you afterwards. "

Despite the fact that "what you felt like doing" was helping her, you reluctantly walked back to the living room, plopping down on the couch as you waited for her.

It doesn't take much time for her to come back, but it feels like forever, and the obvious package "hiding" behind a vase on the table is almost begging you to open it.

"There," she says, setting a bowl in front of you. To be honest, the dish actually looks pretty good. She sets her own bowl beside yours, and you smile as she sits on the floor in front of the table.

You make no move to join her, honestly too tired to do anything, so she sighs in exasperation and beckons you over.

"You wanted to know what the package is, didn't you? Come over here already."

You lazily make your way (like, less than a meter) to the table and sit beside her on the floor, crossing your legs.

"Thank you for the meal."

She nods. You eat as you watch her grab the small package from the table and start opening it. Her food is good, but you're too focused on what she's doing to think about that, truthfully.

She takes out a box that looks a lot like the typical jewelry box, and you pause in your eating. She looks at it and seemingly hesitates before handing it to you, as if she was handing you some random paper.

"There. For you."

So she'd spent her first paycheck on you instead of herself. You would say you were surprised, but truthfully, you weren't. She was used to caring for others before herself (others as in people close to her), so it was pretty normal and expected for her to do something like this.

But... Still.

Your heart sped up and you struggled to swallow the mouthful of food you had in your mouth. You coughed a little, and you saw Sae-byeok almost reach to pat your back.

"What is it?" you ask, taking the box in your hand. It was pretty. Velvety and black, with golden letters for the name of the brand.

"Just open it."

You opened it and felt your chest warm up. It was simple, really. The moon.

"What do you like about watching the night sky so much?"

Many things, you replied, arms crossing over the railing and chin resting on them, "But I'd say the moon." It's so... pretty. So beautiful, resting between all those stars. It gives me a feeling of comfort. It's like it's always there for me. "Kinda dumb, honestly, but I like it."

"Huh." Sae-byeok simply hummed, her own arms crossed on the railing. She stared at the moon before moving her gaze towards you. You looked so beautiful. It almost looked like the sky reflected in your eyes, despite you being so far away from it. It was truly stunning. She looked down.

"I guess... I understand," she finally said, "the way you feel about the moon and everything..." That's how it feels for me... But about you. "

Yes, that's exactly it. You're like the moon to Sae-byeok.ย

You stand between all of the tiny stars. They all shine differently, but they are so small compared to the moon. And the moon doesn't constantly shine. It has different phases, and sometimes it appears dark and nearly invisible.ย

But it's still there. As you are. You are the one that matters in a crowd of utterly insignificant people. The one who comforts her, no matter what. The one who doesn't remain static, or doesn't always shine, but remains beautiful and oh-so-loveable all the same.

You're you, like the moon.

You laughed in a "mocking" manner, clearly trying to brush off your embarrassment. "Don't be cheesy, Sae-byeok. I hate blushing. "

She'd felt herself smiling a little at that.

You held the moon pendant in your palm carefully, staring at it with wonder. Saebyeok felt proud. It was a look similar to the one you got when gazing at the moon. She'd succeeded in her mission to gift you something that made you happy--

You suddenly wrapped your arms around her, taking her off-guard slightly, before she awkwardly reciprocated the hug.

"Kang Sae-byeok," you said quietly, and she waited, "I love you so much."

Her hold on you tightened, and she burrowed her head into your shoulder. I love you too, she thought, unable to get the words to leave her mouth.

"Yeah," she mumbled, "Just... Eat your breakfast, alright? And let me put the necklace on you. "

You pulled away with a smile she loved so much, before handing her the piece of jewelry and turning around. She carefully put the necklace around your neck, delicately making sure nothing was pricking at your skin when she clasped it at the back. She stared as you held the moon pendant and pulled it to look at it again, before turning around to look back at her.

You didn't need her to say the words. She showed her love in all the little things she did for you.

"Thank you so much."

"Sure."

You smile softly before toying with the pendant, thinking about how lucky you are to have her.
