MIST

Mist stared out into the sky, the water scrambling up to the shore, lashing at her talons. Her mind was frantically thinking of all different things, she just couldn't keep still. The sun was shining brightly above, the heat burning her scales, but she didn't want to move. She couldn't, not now. Something was happening. The sea was stirring more than usual, as if it sensed her presence. She had been awake all night, pacing back and forth through the sand, attempting to recall all the facts she acquired about water, scrolling through her mental bookshelves of history. She knew times were different. It was obvious. Dragonets were hatching with new powers no-one could explain, mixed powers as well. And her and her sister were two of those dragonets. It was no secret Mist had been born with RainWing fangs, everyone in the kingdom knew, they were afraid of their own princess.

Stupid Mist thought. Sure, RainWing venom would hurt, but as if she would use it on random dragons who had probably done nothing wrong. Though, there were times when she would reconsider that.ย

"Are you tired?" A voice behind her asked. Mist swirled around, baring her claws, but noticed it was only her sister. Mist sighed and sat back down, glaring at Clam.ย

"No" Mist said bluntly, but, as if on cue, she yawned, failing to stifle it. Clam stared at her and gave Mist her 'really?' smile and paced aver to sit next to her in the wet sand.

"Come on... I know you've been out here all night, you can't stay up forever." Clam said sarcastically. Mist glowered at her."Easy for you to say" Mist growled under her breath. But she couldn't hold it in any longer, she had to tell someone, her sister was her only option.ย

"The seas have been weird. I don't know, I can just feel it... Can't you?" Mist asked desperately, but Clam looked at her as if she was psycho. "The waters have been rousing for five years, nothing's changed..." Clam replied, flexing her talons and her claws. Mist dug her talons into the sand. She knew Clam would say that, but she had to convince her.ย

"Clam, I'm being serious. Of course I know that the tides are unnatural, but they've been even stranger. I only noticed last night... I guess I just felt this presence, like the water was calling to me..." Mist trailed off, distracted by a pale yellow crab scuttling under her claws. She peered at it closely, avoiding its snapping claws as it attempted to fend off potential danger. Mist pierced the crab through the body and flicked it into the ocean, which just made her feel slightly guilty afterward... only slightly.ย

"Let's go explore, it might take your mind off things..." Clam suddenly piped up, her glittering crystal eyes staring at her hopefully. Going on an adventure was one of the last things Mist wanted to do, but her gills were feeling dry and she knew Clam wouldn't let her leave.ย

"Race you to that island" Clam pointed to a small island a flight away. Mist nodded and dived into the salty ocean before her sister, her wings tilted to one side. She glided along with the current, expecting it to change soon, but luck was on her side and she swam through the cold water peacefully as colourful fish dodged out of her way, sliding their slimy scales along her, sending a shivering sensation through her, slowing her down. She looked back for Clam, only catching a glimpse of her deep blue scales, struggling against a whipping sweep of water, dragging her away.ย

Oh no you don't

Mist picked up speed as she zoomed through the water towards her fighting sister, battling against the invisible water current, but not getting anywhere. Mist pulled Clam through the water, her breath speeding up and she panicked and lost her grip. Clam was safe, out of the water's manic currents, but Mist was caught right in the center of it, being dragged away through her attempts of swimming to her sister, which were only tiring her down. "Mist!!" Clam flashed with her illuminent scales, racing to catch her sister, but the seas had already pulled her a long distance, trapping her in a space of magic. She had lost sight of her sister, it was like she was in an abyss that Clam was right outside, yet they couldn't see each other. Mist struggled against the invisible animal of water, kicking and clawing and pushing her through the ocean with her wings, but it was no use. The magic abyss was dark, only a small amount of sunlight showing through the surface. Mist could barely see three meters in front of her but she could tell the abyss blocked off any outside view.ย

As Mist lay in the water staring up at the sun rays peeking through the water, her brain slowly fogging up from exhaustion and pain, she decided she might as well do something to pass the time. She tumbled through the water towards the pile of rocks ahead. She peered at the cracks, unknowingly searching for something. After moments of looking, she found a sign, a sign that she was seeing for the first time, but it wouldn't be the last. Carved into the stone was a drawing of a water drop with a line down the middle. As soon as she noticed it, she felt the exact same aura that had come over her the night before, but this time stronger. She looked at the carving more closely, but didn't notice anything special about it, but Mist liked to think outside the box. The point of the droplet was facing to the left, like an arrow. Mist didn't know if her accusations were accurate, but what if the droplet was an arrow, a sign pointing to something.ย

She quickly looked to the side, kinking her neck as she rubbed it in pain, wincing. She couldn't see outside the abyss, it was just acres of blank water, reminding her of a blank canvas. But the current was swirling in front of her, signaling for her attention. She stared incredulously at the current of the water.

I'm listening to some water. Maybe I have gone psycho.ย

But then the water pointed to something. A cave. Mist focused all her attention on the cave, her thoughts bubbling and mixing and her scales tingling like tiny needles stabbing her below her scales. Suddenly, as the current continued to point towards the cave, a flash of pure white flashing across her mind, then she heard a voice. A voice as deep as the trenches of the water, as strong as a whale, and it spoke to her.

'I await you both.'
