"I assigned you to read animal farm independently at home, so most of you should have read one or two chapters,"

or maybe because you assigned us the homework to read the whole novel i read the whole novel?

ana thought to herself in frustration, even though the teacher was right in her assumption. looking around ana saw only a few students even had the book out, and ana was most definitely the only person with sticky notes sticking out with her annotations on authors craft, negative and positive connotation, word choice and themes that were colour coded.

"could anyone name one theme that you feel came out in the book?" the teacher asked, staring at ana and her book of annotations.

nerd!

ana thought to herself. she could not answer this question, even though she knew that she was the only person in that class room who had read more than two chapters.

so ana sat and waited for the moment the teacher picked on some poor unsuspecting student for the answer.

however that moment never came. mrs anderson's face morphed from forced encouragement to one of genuine suprise.

"yes, press? do you need a bathroom break already? class has just started you know and we can't ha-" the teacher spoke assuming that press would just being playing a prank of some sort.

in all honesty ana was worried that press would call the attention of the teacher and the students to just to comment on her new look, call her ugly or maybe he would just start pissing, you never really knew with a guy like press.

he never really liked going to effort for things, other than all the times he had 'pranked' ana.

that time he left dirt in her locker and she couldn't get the taste out of her mouth for weeks.

when he went into her bag and switched over her english book with one of the same cover, but with a different book inside. so when ana had to take her turn reading a loud to the class, she started reading out a dirty scene from 50 shades of grey.

and the constant insults.

him and smelly samantha were apart of the reason ana knew she had to change.

they barely ever talked, matt press just hated the girl for no could reason. abby always said he never liked attention, so why did he always try to attract ana's?

he interrupted the teachers wrongful assumative words.

"I thought we were naming themes miss." Press grunted out more words than the teacher had normally heard him speak, leaning back in his chair he raised an eyebrow at ana's staring.

the girl would usually shy away, but ana was determined not to let other walk all over her. ana's people pleasing tendencies always got her into trouble, but not anymore.

rather than looking far away from the frankly scary boy, ana raised an eyebrow right back at him.

before brodie also leaned back in his chair, effectively ending the silent challenge between the two.

"uh- yes, okay, go on press," the teacher urged, confused and most definitely skeptical of the troubled students intentions.

"how language has power." the teacher wrote the words on the board after he spoke them, almost in disbelief that the boy could string together a coherent sentence that didn't have the words dude, bro, ass, pussy or tits in it.

"well yes that is a good observation if themes," the older woman paused to push her glasses that were slipping down the slope of her nose back up.

"now i'm going to pick another student to tell me where in the book language has power,"

ana knew the teacher was going to pick her the second the words left her mouth and her brown hawk-like eyes were back on ana.

"miss jai, please give me some explanation or example to proof mr press' idea of the themes."

well shit so much for not being nerdy i guess.

out of the corner of her eye, ana sees press shuffling around and leaning forward a slight bit into her eye line. so ana being the respectful, nonpetty girl she is, made eye contact with the frustrating boy rather than the teacher as ana gave her answer.

"well the commandments that control the animals are altered by the pigs, as they are the only animals that know more than a few words of english,"

seeing press smirk at her words, ana narrows her eyes, brows furrowing, attempting to banish any amusement he is gaining over watching her.

"so this is used as a form of power over other animals. by using language as a form of power to change the rules to whatever the pigs want, they gain power."

Press' smirk was long gone, all traces of amusement wiped clean from the boy's face. Replaced by a new expression ana hadn't seen before.

His eyes darkened slightly and his nose flared, the teachers voice was a background noise to ana. all she could focus on was the look he was now giving her entire body. it felt like not a single part of her was going unseen by press' dark gaze.

press' eyes trailed back up to meet hers, the bell ringing bringing the befuddled girl back into reality. without breaking his gaze, press gave subtle nod to the direction of the door.

did he want to meet her out the door or something? no way.

press broke their lasting eye contact to talk to brodie,

"nah you go on i'll see you in free,"

ana heard his dismissal, a curious thought filling her head. and then his eyes were back on hers, did he always want her to stay behind?

abby would do it, so why shouldn't i.

"you coming?" abby slid under ana's arm, attempting to lift her up despite abby being so short next to ana.

"no you go on and i'll catch you later!" ana responded in her practiced smooth confidence voice. yes ana had practiced in the mirror days before, she had to be strong and be able to say no to people.

ana can i have your homework and you just turn in mine?
no.

ana can you take the bus with me to meet some friends? oh no you don't come just walk there and back with me silly!
no.

can i have your lunch?
no.

and most of these were people ana barely knew, or samantha,

i mean did i just give off the vibe that i love to be walked all over? people pleasing yay?

ana thought to herself, not anymore.

"okay, bye I love you!" a quick hug and a wave goodbye and abby had left for the next class.

ana went to pack up her pencil case, putting pens back into place, but as the last student left in the classroom walked out, shutting the door behind him, press was quickly at ana's side.

ana didn't look up, she could feel his closeness and the heat radiating off of him.

"uh hey press." ana was the picture of put together on the outside, however on the inside she was dead, she died. she could feel shuffling and press leaning his head down to speak beside her ear, but ana just kept on putting her pens away like it was her job and she was getting paid to do it! her focus did not waver from those pens for one second.

but ana only had so many pens and highlighters. so when she reached the second last highlighter, ana accidentally dropped her pencil case on the ground, pens spilling out.

quickly moving down to the ground, ana forced a chuckle.

"whoops! y'know clumsy me, i actually better be going to my next cla-"

"relax." press interrupted.

as she stood up ana finally looked at him. dark grey long sleeve top that accentuated his body just right. ana damned the world for him being able to look mouth wateringly good in a basic grey top and jeans.

ana quickly averted her eyes from him body and back to press' face, only to be met with a knowing look and that slight smirk again.

leaned against her desk, his eyes still sparking with that same look from earlier and one side of his soft looking lips lifted up, ana understood samantha for just a moment.

she still would never understand why samantha cut her own fringe last year,

or why samantha was such a raging bitch,

but ana could defffidently understand the appeal.

but then press went to open his mouth and she just knew he would ruin it.

"i shouldve know that even when you're dressed a little sluttier than normal you're still a massive nerd." press flicked his eyebrows up teasingly.

is that really the insult he's going with?

ana was confused. that comment was downright playful, if said from literally anyone else's mouth ana would have taken that as playful banter.

PLAYFUL BANTER?? WITH PRESS??

the man in question only raised a bushy eyebrow tauntingly, making him seem ever hotter to her which was a strange thought for ana.

press spoke once again, pausing ana's malfunctioning brain at this one interaction.

"anyway, just checkin' that you're coming tonight?"

huh?

"uh, i'm, that i'm coming where?"

am i being pranked? punked? is my leg being pulled on? what is happening? can i die now?

"brodies basement you stuttering moron." aaand press was back, and the look that previously adorned his sharp face was missing.

"stop looking at me with your eyes like your a rabbit and it a fuckin' hunter or some shit,"

everything was back in order.

feeling much more at ease, ana was able to respond without sounding she was missing a brain.

yay.

"yeah my mom is going to a book thing so i'll be there for a while,"

"well then i'll see you there, nerd."

so much for making people see me differently

ana silently lectured herself, unknowing of the real issue,

that matt press would never see
her differently no matter
if she was shy,
confident,
pretty,
ugly,
skinny,
fat.

he didn't care.
