So what happened was,
Jeongin and seungmin were best friends since they were babies, then came hyunjin. Hyunjin, seungmin and jeongin became an inseparable trio.

Jeongin has had a crush on hyunjin for as long as he remembers but hyunjin never felt the same way. Jeongin never told anyone except of seungmin about it because he was scared to be judged by the society, judged by hyunjin or even his own family.

One day a girl named ryujin transfers to their school. She turned out to be hyunjin's old classmate from his old school. Hyunjin and ryujin started spending time together and grew a lot closer

Meanwhile,

Jeongin who had a crush on hyunjin  could only watch them fall in love. He was sad and hurt but for the shake of hyunjin, his best friend's happiness he kept quiet.

Seungmin who knew about it told jeongin to confess so he could move on and not hurt himself more but jeongin didn't.

After months of hyunjin and ryujin being together, jeongin could not hold it in anymore and he decided that it would be better to just move on. So he did. He decided to go somewhere far away from hyunjin so that he could forget about the feelings.

Seungmin who had loved jeongin since they were little didn't say anything about his feelings and just helped jeongin over the years to get close to hyunjin.

But in the end they both ended up being hurt by the person they loved so that's why in the end seungmin says "we weren't so different after all" meaning that they both sacrificed their happiness for their loved one and in the end they got nothing but pain.

He said that because they were in the same path. Jeongin loved hyunjin, seungmin loved jeongin. Both were unrequited love.
