14: We never escaped

"C'mon. Keep moving!" I yell as we keep running.

"C'mon. C'mon! C'mon, c'mon!" Minho yells and I pick up my pace.

We then make it to the door and it thankfully opens.

"Alright, c'mon." I yell and we start running again.

It looks like a sand storm has hit while we climb up a big hill as fast as we can.

"Keep going!" I exclaim over the harsh winds and helicopter noises.

I then look back to hear the guard yelling while shining their flashlights.

"Shit. C'mon, go! Go! We'll lose them in the storm!" I exclaim as I push Minho and Frypan up the hill and I follow after them.

"Notify on visual. Copy that. Standby, Two. Be on my six." I hear a man say over the noises of loud engines.

We then stop by an edge and I motion my hand out to everyone. We all crouch down, the sounds of engines still close by.

"Alana." Teresa says, her lips trembling.

"I know." I whisper as I still check to make sure the coast is clear. "Everybody, go, go, go. Stay low. Stay low!" I say and Teresa and the boys nod, slowly following me.

"Teresa, hang on. Stay together!" Thomas says as we start running down a hill.

"I think we lost them!" Winston says as we keep running.

"Keep going, guys. Let's go." I say as Teresa keeps running.

"Watch out!" Winston says to Frypan as he almost trips.

"Where are we even going?" Minho says as Teresa looks around the little den.

"C'mon, Aris. Let's go. C'mon! Over here! C'mon!"' I say as we finally catch up with Teresa.

We stop by another opening, jagged glass surrounding the edges.

"C'mon!" Teresa says.

"Teresa, wait!" Thomas says, but I follow her.

"No, don't go in there!" Newt yells.

"Get down here!" Teresa and I yell as we are now standing in darkness.

"Okay, c'mon! Get inside!" I hear Thomas say and I sense Minho hopping in.

"C'mon, we should go. Aris, get in! Let's go, Fry." I hear Thomas say as Frypan and Aris slide down the little hill.

They quickly get back on their feet and stand next to us.

Minho then takes off his backpack and tosses me a flashlight. I put it on and I shine it, so does Minho. We shine it on different spots to try and figure out where we are.

"Where the hell are we?" Minho pants as I give the flashlight to Frypan.

"We gotta go." I say, motioning my hand at everyone.

"No." I hear Teresa say.

"We gotta keep moving." I pant, turning away.

"Alana, stop!" She exclaims and I turn to her. "Tell me what's going on." Teresa pants, looking at Thomas and I sigh.

"It's WICKED." I say.

"What?" She blankly says.

"It's WICKED. They lied to us. We never escaped. Me and Aris, we found bodies. Too many to count." I breathe.

"What do you mean? Dead bodies?" Minho asks me.

"No, a body of water. Yes, dumbass, dead bodies." I state. "But they weren't alive, either. They had them strung up. With tubes coming out of them. They were being drained. There's something inside of us that WICKED wants. Something in our blood. So we have to get as far away from them as possible." I say, rolling up my sleeve, looking down at the bandaid the doctor had put on after taking my blood.

"Okay. So, what's the plan?" Newt pants to me.

I just sigh, rolling down my sleeve and shake my head at him.

"You do have a plan, right?" Newt says to me.

"Yeah. I don't know." I admit to him.

"Well, we followed you out here, Alana, and now you're saying that you have no idea where we're going or what we're doing." Newt says, raising his voice a bit.

"I'm not Albert Einstein, okay? We had one. And he died because of me. Do you even know what Alby's last words were? He looked me in the eye and said, Alana, get them out. I know you will. I live by those words forever, now. So, excuse me for not having a plan under my damn belt twenty four seven." I say, wiping my nose with the back of my hand.

"Wait." Aris speaks up. "Janson said something about people hiding in the mountains. Some kind of resistance or army." He says.

"The Right Arm." I say. "The Right Arm." I repeat. "If they're really against WICKED, maybe they can help us." I say, looking at Minho.

"People. In the mountains. Mountain people. That's your plan?" Newt says to me.

"It's the only chance we have. Unless you want me to sacrifice any more of you. Because I can't and I won't do that. I already broke a promise, I'm not breaking another one." I tell Newt.

"Alana." Frypan says but I don't meet his eyes, I keep my eyes on Newt.

"Hey, guys. Check this out." Winston says. "Minho, give me a light!" He says and I finally break my gaze away.

Minho crouches down next to him and shines the light on the snow, revealing footprints.

"Someone's been down here." Winston says and I crouch down next to Minho.

"Or, it's probably a Crank. Or maybe they put the footprints here to make us think someone's been down here. Remember, everything is a test. It always will be." I say, studying the footprints.

"I like the way you think." Teresa comments.

"And I would like you to explain how you've risen from the dead?" I say, standing up. "Did they make you fake your death? Was it your idea? Did you have Thomas lie for you?" I ask her.

"Uh, Alana, I, uh-"

"You can tell me when you're ready." I state and she nods. "Let's go." I say.

"C'mon. Open up." Minho suddenly says and we all help him lift up the opening.

He then shines his light as Frypan turns on a lantern.

"Looks like people lived here." Minho says as he shakes out a piece of clothing.

"Where are they now?" Newt asks, shining his light.

"They either escaped, at WICKED or a Crank. There's no such thing as freedom anymore." I say, standing next to Minho.

"You're very smart, you know that?" Minho says.

"No, I'm not. I just know their schemes too well. That's the tragic part. I've been remembering more and more each day." I mutter to him and Minho frowns at me.

"Alana-"

"Let's pack some of this stuff up. Anything you think you might need. We'll split up, see what else we can find. Meet back here." I say, cutting Minho off as I walk away.

"Wait, Alana." Winston says and tosses me a flashlight.

"Thanks." I tell him. "Let's go." I say, and everyone goes their separate ways.

"How's your cheek?" Minho asks.

"Fine." I simply say as we keep walking while shining our lights.

"Alana." I hear Minho say and I stop in my tracks.

"Yeah?" I say, shining my flashlight.

"All those kids that we left behind back there. I don't wanna end up like that." His voice echoes as I shine my light down some weird tubes.

They remind me of the tubes Aris and I saw outback. All of those kids, they don't deserve any of this.

"Hey." Minho says. "Do you hear me?" He asks and I snap out of my trance.

"Yeah, I hear you." I nod at him.

"Good." He nods. "Now, what are we looking for out here?" Minho asks me.

"Signs of life. People. Survivors. Anyone who can help us." I answer, shining my light around.

"Does he count?" Minho says and I turn my head, following his gaze.

He shines his light on a man with a plastic bag over his head, sitting in a chair.

"Shit." I mutter as we walk toward it.

Minho then take his fingers on the lamp and I meet his dark eyes.

"They had power." Minho tells me and I look back down at the dead man.

I then shine my light behind Minho, revealing wires and big boxes. I'm guessing it was electricity. Minho then looks back down and we spot the same wires we had seen before.

We finally stop walking once we reach two doors. We pits them open, then shining our flashlight all around. Minho then shines his light a little above my head and reveals the same colored wires from before once again.

I then shine my light on a gate. I keep walking toward it, getting closer to the baby toys and pictures crowding around it. I walk by more stuffed animals and cards hung up on the gate with Minho slowly trailing behind me.

"This looks promising." I hear Minho say and I turn my head to see him kneeled down by a box of switches.

I then crouch down and shine my light through the gate to see an empty bed and a blanket with toys scattered everywhere. I then hear rattling and my eyes widen. I turn my head back to Minho.

"Hey, Minho. Wait!" I say as he flips the switch and lights begin turning on as I stand up.

"Alana, watch out!" Minho yells.

I jump as I turn my head to see a Crank come at me. It bangs against the gate.

"Get back, get back!" Minho yells as he pulls me further away from it.

"Thanks." I nod at him.

"Jesus. Her eyes!" Minho says, shining his light on the Crank's face and my eyes widen at the disturbing sight.

I then hear another scream and Minho and I jump, turning around. He shines his light to reveal another Crank.

"Oh, shit." I mutter as it comes toward us.

"Stay back!" Minho yells as he picks up a metal object and hits it on the head, making it fall to the ground.

"Fuck." I mutter.

"What the hell is that thing?" Minho asks adrenaline Crank start moving on the ground.

"A Crank." I tell him.

"Huh?" Minho says, but I shake my head at him.

"Gotta move! Go! Go!" I exclaim as I hear more Cranks and we start running.

We make our way into another room and hold the two doors against a Crank right before it could get inside.

"Shit." I pant as Minho and I press harder on the doors.

"Hold it down!" Minho says.

"What?" I say.

"Hold it down!" He says again and walks over a shelf of drawers.

"Minho, what are you doing?" I ask as I hear more Cranks piling behind the door.

"Watch out! Watch out!" Minho says and I move as he pushes the long shelf down, putting it in front of the door.

We then stand back. It seemed to have worked. But, we jump once again by the sounds of more Cranks.

"Go, go, go!" Minho yells as the Cranks start screaming.

I start running with Minho as, passing by as many Cranks as we can.

"Let's get the hell out of here!" Minho exclaims and I nod as we keep running.

We then stop by two escalators. I look back and see the Cranks coming closer.

"Shit." I say as Minho and I jog up the steps of it.

We keep running. We have to warn the rest of the gang.

We can never catch a break.
