the brewed

7:45 pm.

benny, ethan and alexis hid under a table, surrounded by groaning teachers who seemed to be zombies. they were surprised they weren't caught, after all, zombies weren't that stupid. right?

"oh, man! why couldn't we be at home?" benny asked, his eyes flying all over the place nervously, "watching oh so you think you can fly? eating a triple-meat lover's pizza. with extra meat."

"yeah! instead, our teachers could bash in here any second and scoop out our brains like chip dip," ethan replied, his voice shaky and scared.

alexis would admit she was scared, maybe not as much as them but she was terrified more for her friends.

"will you two–" alexis began before getting cut off by very loud banging on the door.

"think we can outrun them?" benny questioned with a serious look, looking for an answer in our eyes.

alexis gave both ethan and benny looks of confusion, "i don't have to outrun them, i just have to outrun you two!"

"you know? i think they'd go for your brain first there, alexis, "honor roll"!" benny said, betrayed by her words.

there were more banging at the doors and sudden crashing through the windows, the zombies were flooding in.

"where is sarah? we could really use her help right now," ethan groaned in panic.

"i don't think she was in a very helping mood today," benny said nervously, pulling back his frown.

9 1/2 HOURS EARLIER:
9:15 am.

"i'm not breaking any arms or smashing anyone through a wall just because he called you.. what was it?" sarah asked, giving an annoying look towards the boys.

"teethan," ethan answered.

"benny rabbit. it's not what he says, it's how he says it," benny added.

alexis facepalmed mentally, letting out a snicker along with sarah as their teacher came out and cleared his throat, "lets go, boys."

"right with you, sir. if not there in five minutes, start boring kids without us!" benny said with a grin before spinning around and dropping it.

"we'll be right there, sir," ethan chuckled, anxiously turning around as well.

"forget it! look, we both have a trip to the art gallery. lucky us! later "teethan." sarah smirked, grabbing alexis's hand.

"benny rabbit," alexis also joked, making benny's mouth open a little. she followed sarah even though their hands were already intertwined.

"sounds cute when they say it," ethan muttered to benny.

9 1/2 HOURS LATER:
7:48 pm.

"oh! we're so dead!" benny whined, "this is not fair! why couldn't we get some kinda sign that this was going to happen?"

"just a hint would've been nice," ethan murmured.

7:53 pm.

ethan stood up and grabbed the fire extinguisher, hitting the zombies' hands with them which made them flail, but not run. he suddenly lifted the tube and began spraying them, which made them panic and they fled.

"they hate this stuff. if it lasts long enough, we should be able to hold them off until sarah gets back."

"sarah is coming back, right?" benny anxiously asked, giving the other two a scared look.

"of course! i know she wouldn't leave me to die, at least," alexis answered honestly, in the back of her mind hoping sarah would save the day before alexis could reveal her vampirism.

"we're the most important things in her life, right?" ethan said, surely not sounding very sure.

10:35 am.

sarah groaned and looked up, alexis crossing her arms and looking away while ignoring the teacher droning on.. and on.

"the use of light.. and shade is like an emotional fireworks display. and the.." he stopped mid-sentence, taking a sip of his coffee.

alexis turned away from her previous attention, finding a guy seemingly to be very into sarah and drawing her down. "sarah, look," alexis whispered, nudging sarah lightly which made her look.

sarah smiled and rolled her eyes, going back to the teacher. alexis smirked and walked away, letting sarah talk with the stranger.

he suddenly walked over to her, already speaking to sarah, "sometimes, i think he's never gonna stop talking."

8:02 pm.

"come on!" ethan sprayed the zombies, cringing that the extinguisher was running out.

benny picked up a chair, going to smack the rest but the zombies had stopped reaching in for a second.

"this thing isn't gonna last much longer. maybe we should call rory?" ethan suggested, benny giving him a look of concern.

"rory? is it that bad?!"

"well, he did say he wanted to protect the innocent," alexis said, unsure.

--

2:34 pm.

around this time, the three figured out that zombies were invading the school, all three teenagers running through the halls and ducking beside a wall in the office.

"we need to warn everybody," ethan said quietly, looking through the window of the door.

"what? didn't you hear me screaming? i think we've done our part," benny nervously chuckled, alexis smacking his arm.

ethan looked over and reached for the intercom microphone, pushing it towards benny. "wait for my cue." ethan confused at first, scanned though the buttons before landing on a certain button and pressing it, which made him turn towards benny. "you're on."

benny tapped the mic. "testing. check 1, 2. testing."

"benny!" ethan and alexis whispered, giving benny a stern look each.

"attention, all whitechapel students, this is an emergency life saving announcement from benny weir. admit it, girls, you know who i am," benny started, alexis giving benny the death stare. he stopped laughing, repositioning himself, "due to unforeseen circumstances, uh... beyond our control, we have no choice but to cancel all classes, extra-curricular activities, and--"

alexis snatched the microphone from benny, ethan joining alexis on the microphone. "zombies, RUN!"

ethan went to place the microphone before a zombie had grabbed onto his arm. ethan looked up as if he was having a vision, benny trying to grab ethan's arm. alexis picked up the microphone and smacked the zombie's head, knocking it out.

"ethan! snap out of it! come on!" benny yelled, pulling ethan along as they ran.

the three try ducking into a room but fail, the door failing to budge any. they decide to keep forward before they hid behind one of the closed in walls.

"guys! i just had a vision," ethan began, "the coffee from lotta latte, that's whats making this happen."

"lotta latte? figures. you would have to be brain dead to pay five bucks a cup for flavoured bean juice," benny said, alexis groaning in response.

"but that doesn't make any sense. this coffee has been around for a long time. why is it, all of a sudden, turning people into zombies? what changed?"

--

7:52 pm.

they waited until the zombies walked off before scattering from the classroom and running towards the bathroom, locking the door behind them.

"all right! we're safe in here. trust me," benny said with trust in himself, "teachers will never enter a student washroom. it's like an unwritten rule of education."

alexis crossed her arms, both ethan and alexis sharing looks of concern with benny. "sure! right out there with don't eat student's brains?"

a knock erupts at the door, all three of them rushing to keep against it. "you know whose fault this really is? sarah's!"

"oh shut up with the sarah thing, okay?" alexis cuts benny off, rolling her eyes.

"why don't you fight your own battles?" benny mocked sarah.

suddenly, the door pushed itself open, sarah getting in with luck. "did i miss anything?"

benmy stood up nervously. "uh, we were just talking about you! uhm, hooray! we're saved."

"we were worried about you," alexis sighed, smiling at her.

"i had a vision about what's turning people into zombies. it's coffee!" ethan exclaimed.

sarah nodded and sighed, "i know. lotta latte. i had a chat with the folks down there earlier."

"i tried to call you to warn you. you never picked up," ethan said.

"yeah. sorry about that." she smirked. "i kinda lent my phone to mr. collingwood."

benny had noticed how quiet it became. he looked outside the bathroom, seeing the multiple knocked out zombies in the halls. "all right. can we go now? i mean... after i wash my hands, of course." benny pointed at the sign on the door.

"there's nowhere to go! the streets are crawling with zombies, and the longer we wait, the worse this thing gets. don't you have some, like, geek know-how on zombie fighting?" sarah questioned.

"well, in every zombie movie, it's always the same. smash 'em in the head!" ethan looked towards benny.

"except in super dead four. they cured the zombies with "antizombulex"," benny added.

"you're right! if we get a sample of the coffee, maybe we can analyze it and find a cure or weakness," ethan said, perking up.

"sounds like we're headed to the lab. let's go!" sarah said, ethan stopping them quickly.

"wait, i think we're going to need my ectoplasmic refractor from home."

"oh! love that ectoplasmic refractor."

"here's the deal. you get a sample and we'll race to your house to get your... "ecto" thing and we meet in the lab in 10 minutes. deal?"

ethan and benny nodded. "i'll stay with them. they're gonna need me."

"uhm, the refractor is in my room on my microscope, okay?"

sarah nodded before speeding out.

"okay, she's leading them away. good. there should still be some in the teacher's lounge. but first, we gotta make a pit stop," ethan said.

"pit stop? we're already here."

"not that kind of pit stop," ethan and alexis said in unison before they walked towards the bio-lab.

--

they escape the lab, benny holding a large jar of pig brains. "who would have thought the bio-lab had such big pig brains!"

"oh! i guess i did," ethan answered sarcastically, "who knew alexis had powerful punches and kicks?"

alexis's head perked up, her eyes opening a little. she grinned nervously. "oh, uh, you'd be surprised."

"okay, over there. follow me." ethan waved them over, all three of them escaping to under the foosball table.

ethan gasped quietly, watching a zombie walk in front of us. "okay. so, we throw the pig brain, grab the coffee and then we're home free."

"i don't think you understand the meaning of home free," benny said, his phone ringing loudly.

"turn that thing off!" the other shouted in a whisper, hitting him lightly.

"hello? i can't talk-- what? really? that's amazing."

"benny!"

"five-hundred minutes. unlimited text. thirty bucks! that's good, right?" benny grinned at us.

"hang up!" they said in sync, giving him looks.

he hung up the phone, putting it up when ethan took the jar and took off the lid. "okay. pig brain... is a go," he said, sliding the jar across the floor.

the zombies head towards the jar of pig brains, all three standing and ethan going for his sample. "all right. all right. i'm going for it."

ethan took a part of the sample, standing up only to turn around and bump into a zombie, dropping the cup. "i dropped the sample!" ethan said.

"i'll get the coffee. you both go!" benny suggested, pointing towards the door.

"are you sure?" alexis nervously asked, giving him a sad look.

"yes! trust me, just go!" benny answered. alexis opened one of the nearby lockers, hitting the zombie roughly in the face which made it fall to the floor.

ethan and alexis escape the room, sliding down the wall before hiding behind a thinner wall. they caught their breaths, swallowing their fear before footsteps could be heard.

"benny? is that you? benny?"

benny jumped out in front of us, scaring us. "benny, are you okay?"

"never better. check this out." benny hid alongside the wall with us, showing us an entire coffee pot of samples.

"cool!" rory shouted, jumping out with a mask on and scaring us.

"is that hot chocolate? gotcha!" rory laughed, taking off his mask.

"check out what i swiped from the teachers lounge. hicks took this from me in september."

"wait! you were in the teachers lounge?" ethan asked.

"candy, games, tv, couches!"

"zombies?" benny questioned, lifting an eyebrow.

"really? i just thought they were all really grumpy."

"whatever. we have to get this coffee to the chemistry lab," ethan said, benny nodding.

"chemistry? boring. i'd rather smack me some zombies," rory said, putting on the mask. "rv away!"

"we better rearm." ethan said, ripping the fire extinguisher off the wall.

"totally, let's get this cure going, huh?" benny said, sounding more sad than usual.

"benny, you alright?" alexis asked, growing concerned.

"yep!"

--

sarah ran into the room around the same time ethan was trying to figure out a main problem within the coffee. she handed ethan his 'ectoplasmic refractor.'

"ah, thanks. did you see my mom?" ethan asked.

"we exchanged a few words," sarah said with unconfident tones.

"oh," benny quietly said.

alexis turned to look at benny, noticing the large amount of sweat he was experiencing. her eyebrows knitted together. "woah, benny, you're sweating so much! are you sure you're okay?"

"yeah! i'm fine. i'm pumped. let's do this zombie cure!" he cheerfully answered, giving off a grin but his face seemed so.. off. he wasn't okay like he said.

"there's definitely something going on here," ethan suddenly said, "these cells are like neurons. like brain cells, but they're mutating."

"okay. mutant neurons. cool."

knocking erupts at the door, sarah and alexis shooting up in concern. "company! speed up the geeking!"

"you can't rush science!" ethan yelled from behind.

alexis picked up a fire extinguisher, spraying the zombies while sarah grabbed a nearby object to hit them with. "you can if you don't want your brain eaten!"

"what happened?"

ethan looked at benny to respond, "the neurons are gone. just looks like plain old coffee now with... it's like it cured itself just sitting there."

"maybe it has to be fresh?" sarah questioned, grunting as she hit another one.

"hot! that's why the zombies hate the fire extinguisher. it's cold!" ethan said, looking at benny once again who happened to be even more sweaty than before if that was possible.

"great... so we just wait here until january?" benny slowly asked.

"can we just blast the air-conditioning or something?" alexis suggested.

"sounds like a plan! benny, pack up! we gotta fight our way to the mechanical room."

"who are you kidding? they'll break you like a fingernail. we'll do it," sarah cut in.

"oh! if you wanna go," ethan laughed nervously.

"totally. next zombie rescue is on us."

"yeah."

then we left to the mechanical room.

sarah and alexis exited the room, knocking the zombies out of view from the boys and they sped off to the mechanical room.

--

"jesus, this looks tough," alexis said, seeing all the different boxes and machines.

sarah nodded, looking at other places.
"come on! can't there be something as simple as an "on" switch?"

the two ran into rory, rory seeming to have turned but the new failed to notice too quickly since it was dark in the area.

"ah! rory you scared us. come here. make your geek-self useful," sarah said, alexis crossing her arms in confusion.

he crept closer to the girls, their faces becoming shocked and they jumled back in surprise when he shouted, "brains!"

sarah's arms fell on rory's while his fell on hers, the two having a great hold. "do not bite me! or you're going to be the most undead vampire that ever... undied!"

sarah slammed rory into the walls a few before alexis slammed his head into the wall to knock him out. "i'm sorry, rory!"

the wall she happened to slam him into, happened to be the air box which made it turn on quickly after.

"guess you're cooler than you look after all," sarah remarked, high-fiving alexis in accomplishment.

--

the two rush back to the room, entering to see the all of the zombies knocked out on the floor. ethan sighed  in relief, alexis noticing benny knocked out, folding her arms in slight uncomfortable feelings. she knew something had happened to him.

"we good?" sarah asked.

"yeah. the zombies are all cooled off and catching some zs," ethan yawned and scratched his neck. "i get tired just looking at them."

"you know what you need? a coffee," sarah said, pointing at ethan with a smirk.

"no. i'll pass. thanks."

benny suddenly started groaning random words. "half-caf, low-fat, latte mochaccino. no foam." his arm fell back to the ground.

alexis giggled quietly, whispering, "sleep well, dork."

the other two gave her a confused and cheeky look, her smile dropping in confusion. "what?"

--

the four teens stood on the sidewalk, across the street from two familiar people for sarah along with a news reporter. sarah stood under ethan's umbrella and alexis stood under benny's.

"and so all over whitechapel, people are cranking the ac, trapping their loved ones in freezer, and throwing ice cream at children. that's how yesterday's bizzare outbreak of hot coffee forever was frozen in its tracks by common cold, thanks to local heroes like these," the reporter informed, handing the microphone to a worker of lotta latte.

"hi. lotta latte coffee, it's all better now," the woman said, looking at the camera and the same guy who flirted with (and rejected rudely) sarah yesterday.

"i can't believe i liked that guy," sarah sighed, crossing her arms.

"yeah, he's a jerk," alexis said, copying her actions.

"this stinks! we saved the day," benny cut in, ethan giving him a confused look.

""we"? you almost bit my face off," ethan remarked.

"i meant before that."

ethan exhaled, "i'm sorry, benny, but we unsung heroes have to take the high road. right, sarah, alexis?" the three looked to their side, noticing sarah suddenly gone.

alexis turned her attention back to the the three across the street and noticed a high speed passing by the girl and guy, making their coffee's drop instantly. sarah sped back to her group, high-fiving alexis, sharing laughs as she responded to ethan, "great! the high road."
