It's What I Do

After Eren's final battle with Annie, my job was to survey the damage done to the city. My husband, none other than Captain Levi himself, gave me this job since we had a child.

My name is Rukia Ackerman, in case you're just now jumping into my story. You have missed out on quite a bit, my friend.

****I could see several buildings on fire from where I stood on rooftop. Many streets and shops were destroyed during the titan fight.

Levi was prowling the deserted streets, searching for people who may have survived.

I jotted down notes on my parchment, and looked at the wall to count exactly how many foot holes Annie had punched into the wall during her attempted escape.

I waved my quill from hole to hole as I counted.

One...two...three...four...five...six...seven...eight....nine...

As soon as I got to thirteen, I gasped and dropped my clipboard.

"Oh. My. God."

Hanji ran over.

"Rukia?" She asked when she saw the look on my face. "What's the," she asked, following my line of sight, "problem?"

"There's a titan in the wall!" A civilian screamed.

Levi must have heard as the civilians started to clamor, for he looked up at the wall, and the color drained from his face.

Pastor Nick screamed,  "DO NOT LET THE SUN SHINE ON THAT TITAN!!!"

Hanji and I had squads to fasten a cover over the hole in the wall. We were now on top of the wall, and Hanji was interrogating the pastor.

"YOU KNEW ABOUT THIS ALL ALONG!? WHY HIDE THE TRUTH!?" She screeched.

"I did it to protect the walls! To protect humanity! No human hands must defile the three goddesses!"

Hanji grabbed Nick's lapels and dragged him to the edge of the wall.

"Tell. Me. Everything. You. Know." She hissed through clenched teeth. She gradually lowered him until he lay parallel to the wall, his feet the only part of his body that still touched the wall. All I could think was "Day-um Hanji...."

"My life is nothing compared to these sacred walls! If I am to die, I will do so happily!"

Hanji grinned like a madwoman.

"You want me to let you go?" She asked crazily. Hanji's eyes were not their usual color, and I saw no glint of emotion whatsoever. All I saw was rage.

Nick let go of his lapels and threw his arms out to the sides.

"I will die willingly for these walls!"

"Do you know why we, members of the scouting legion, shed our blood every waking moment so freely!? To break free from the walls that keep everyone from living their lives to the fullest! Do not let my men have died in vain."

"Squad Leader! That's enough!" A survey corps member yelled.

Hanji pulled Nick to a safe zone on top of the wall and then sat on the edge, laughing. Her eyes were back to their usual sparkly chocolate brown.

"Ha, ha. Sorry! Sorry, just kidding!"
