epilogue

1 year later

What occurred couldn't remain concealed from the world entirely. Our only recourse was to shield the truth. As far as the rest of the world was concerned, a group of counselors were attacked by a family of hunters. The Hacketts attacked the stranded young adults who took refuge in their camp lodge while it was supposed to be empty. The noise from the battle of survival brought the attention of - big surprise - wild bears.
The story spread and of course, not everyone believed our cover. There were many conspiracists who believed that we were lying, but only us survivors really knew the truth.

After the Hacketts quarry incident most of the group stayed in contact virtually. Dylan had stayed with me at my home town for a week before leaving, us both starting our days as college students. We lived in different states but still took every chance to visit each other. The only ones who didn't maintain regular contact were Ryan and Laura. They seemed more adversely affected and avoided discussing the ordeal. Surprisingly, Max, of the couple, remained in touch, eager to understand what transpired while he was infected, and became friends with Dylan and Nick. It's only been a year, so while we've all come to terms with what happened and moved forward with our lives, we haven't fully let go. Nevertheless, we've celebrated our individual successes.

I, for example, found my own way to cope with what happened. When I wasn't busy with art school I was working on my digital comic and YouTube cartoon series, about the night at Hacketts quarry. The conspiracy theorists gave me the idea, claiming I started it to poke fun at their theories. Thanks to the media coverage and podcasts, including Ryan's favorite, "Bizarre Yet Bonafide," the series garnered significant attention in a short span of time.

I wasn't the only one who found some silver lining in the traumatic incident. I enlisted Abi to assist me in crafting my digital story, and soon enough, she joined me at my university, becoming my roommate.

Emma's YouTube channel experienced a large rise in popularity due to the newfound attention. Jacob also leveraged the story to his advantage as a heroic survivor, securing a scholarship to an athletically centered university.
The rest of the group chose a more low-key route to the fame, not wanting to be associated with the event.

It was about a month ago that Travis called us. He'd inherited the camp in his family's death. As a cop, he wasn't exactly prepared to be a camp director, but didn't want to give up his brother's passion and all the work put into it. This year, however, things were a bit different. One might expect the camp to suffer after the incident, but despite a decrease in attendance, there were still kids eager to experience Hackett's Quarry. And, of course, Travis needed counselors.
Some of us, including Me, Dylan, Emma, Jacob, Kaitlyn, and surprisingly Max, were enthusiastic about returning to Hackett's Quarry. Others required more persuasion: Laura, Abi, Nick, and Ryan, who only agreed to come back out of respect for his departed friends.

Now, as summer rolled around, it was time to return to the place where it all began. Ryan had been the first to arrive, getting there a week early to assist Travis with preparations. And Dylan and I were the last to arrive the night before the start of camp, having met at his apartment a day before to make the journey together.

We all formerly caught up over a campfire party. Kaitlyn had a new boyfriend, moving on from Ryan. Abi and Nick had embarked on a new romantic journey together. Max and Laura were facing challenges in their relationship as they returned to camp. Ryan was preoccupied with looking after his siblings, leaving little time for dating. Jacob was reveling in the college frat life. Meanwhile, Emma was channeling her energy into personal growth and her career.

We each shouldered our own responsibilities to manage the camp, determined to rebuild its positive reputation after the previous events. That summer unfolded smoothly, and we carried on in this manner, united in our efforts to move forward.

Five years later, we were still at the helm of the camp. Graduation and the start of our adult lives meant that not everyone could make it back every year. Those of us who remained committed to the camp included me, Jacob, Emma, Abi, Nick, and Kaitlyn. However, that year marked a notable absence—Dylan had to stay behind for work and to care for our one-year-old baby.

In addition to our regular team, we welcomed two new counselors: two sisters who had once been our campers themselves. Change was inevitable, and it was evident that some things had shifted over the years.

Dylan and I had tied the knot and were now parents to our first child. Jacob had found himself in a committed relationship with a girl who was almost the polar opposite of Emma. Surprisingly, Kaitlyn and Ryan had started dating. Emma had found love with an actor, while Abi and Nick's relationship remained steadfast and strong.

Ten years after the incident, Dylan and I had expanded our family to include three children. We were fortunate enough to enjoy financial stability, with Dylan finding success in his scientific career and branching out into music, while I thrived as an artist and animator. Investing some of our resources, we modernized the camp, enhancing security measures, upgrading cabins, fortifying the lodge, and even introducing Wi-Fi for the kids to use their phones on Saturdays. Our two eldest children, aged ten and eight, eagerly attended the camp, while our youngest, aged five, remained home with Dylan. We bought a home closer to the camp, allowing Dylan and our youngest daughter to visit multiple times a week, even though he couldn't stay overnight.

Emma had pursued a career in acting but remained dedicated to helping run the camp. She and Jacob rekindled their relationship during their time at the camp, surprising everyone by evolving into a mature couple and eventually getting married.

Abi also returned, now married to Nick. Like me, Abi found success as a professional artist, while Nick pursued a career as a chef, serving as our camp cook.

While the others didn't physically return to the camp, they remained in contact, preserving their lifelong friendships forged through shared experiences.

After that summer, we embarked on filming a movie inspired by the camp and the cartoon series based on our experiences. Everyone enthusiastically accepted the invitation to participate, except for Ryan. Laura hesitated initially, but her excited kids and supportive husband ultimately convinced her to join.

And that's our story. That's how it began and how it concluded. It wasn't without its challenges, but looking back, it was undeniably worth it. Along the way, we discovered love, achieved success, and, most importantly, forged an unbreakable bond of friendship that will endure forever.
