Five

"Got your back," Steve tells me as I fight off several agents, spearing them with icicles. I see the shield out of the corner of my eye, taking down some agents who were approaching me.

"Thanks, Cap," I grunt, spinning around to freeze some of the agents behind me.

"Top floor clear," Maria says.

"Second floor clear," Clint announces and we hear him grunt. "Nowit's clear," he corrects and I huff a laugh, breathless.

"I should really start going to those Yoga sessions with you, Lil," I say and I hear laughs from both of the teams.

"You're more than welcome to come along, Y/N/N," Lillian says.

"I'll keep it in mind," I grunt just as Steve's shield flies out in front of me and tackles the next row of soldiers to the ground.

"We desperately need back up here!" Steve says.

"On it," comes Bucky's voice and even in the situation I feel my heart fluttering slightly and I can sense the wide smile already dawning on my face at just the sound of my boyfriends name.

My boyfriend. That sounded good.

We see him sprinting up from the basement, emerging at the opposite side of the hallway from me. He smiles when he sees me, shooting one of the agents attacking me. Natasha and Clint also arrive down the stairs from the second floor.

"You're right. You did need back up," Natasha comments as an arrow whizzes past my ear and buries itself in an agent.

Between the four of us, we managed to clear the first floor from any hostiles. I tried to catch my breath as Bucky came over, putting an arm around my waist, helping me upright.

"You okay, doll?" He asks and I nod, making him smile and he presses a quick kiss to my lips.

"Come on, we gotta go help out the others," I murmur quietly, grabbing his hand and running with him towards the staircase.

"Top floor, now," Leo's panicked voice says and my eyes widen, quickening my pace and sprinting up the stairs to the roof of the building, Bucky hot on my heels.

The super soldier begins to shoot at the people who are surrounding Leo and Tony is covering them from the sky. I rush forwards, freezing people who try to approach me and reach Leo. He's kneeling on the ground, Lillian's head in his lap. Blood is pooled around them and tears are flowing quickly and freely down Leo's cheeks as he holds his girlfriend tight to him.

"Update on the memory stick," I demand, "we need to leave,"

"We've almost got it," Evan assures me.

"What's going on up there?" Maria questions.

"Lily... Lily's been taken out. We need to get her to the ship," I respond, trying to get my emotions under control. I couldn't loose my best friend, not again. "Cap behind you!" I call out and Steve turns around just in time to take out the agent aiming a gun at him.

"Leo, get Lily to the ship," Maria says.

"I'll help," I immediately offer.

"We haven't completed the mission. We need you to help, Y/N," Steve argues, punching one of the agents.

"You're not the captain of this team, Cap," Maria states and I can hear the frown in her voice.

"But he's right. You can't abandon the mission now," Tony says.

"You guys really aren't good at not being in charge, huh?" I say, heaving Lily to her feet with the help of Leo.

"People are going to die, Y/N! It happens! We have to complete the mission, it's for the greater good!" Tony explodes and my hand tightens into a fist.

"You have no right to talk to her like that!" Jordan shouts.

"Can you get her back to the ship?" I ask Leo and he shakes his head.

"Not on my own."

"I'll cover you." Leo nods and lifts his girlfriend bridal style.

When we get back to the compound, Lily is rushed straight to the medical wing and the rest of us go into the living room. There's a stony silence and, for the first time since their arrival, I can feel the weight of being on different teams between us.

"You disobeyed a direct order, Y/N." Steve says finally.

"You're not my captain,"

"But I am your superior when it comes to the field. I hate to pull rank on you, Y/N, because we are friends. But I'm a captain, your captain,"

"Maria's my captain."

"And as her captain I'd like to formally ask you to fuck off and leave her alone,"

"Thanks Captain Maz but I can say that to him myself. Fuck of Steve, alright? If it was Bucky in that position don't tell me you wouldn't have done the same,"

"That's not the same thing," Steve argues but I bark a harsh laugh, rolling my eyes.

"It's exactly the same thing, Steve," I feel myself getting worked up and try to calm down, clenching my fists. Maria notices this and frowns in concern.

"Stand down, Y/N," she says quietly. I clench my jaw, nodding and turning away from the Avengers.

"You put everyone into more danger by disobeying orders to protect one person," Steve kept at it, keeping on adding new things to his list of complaints about me until eventually I lose it in a way I hadn't done in a while.

"Shut the fuck up," I finally scream, turning around. My friends know what's going on and duck for cover just in time to not be impaled by the shards of ice that explode out from my body. The Avenger's eyes widen and they drop to the floor, looking at the icy wasteland I had created against my own will.

I was breathing heavily, my fists were clenched again as I took in the scene in front of me. The actions of a few seconds ago register and my hands fly over my mouth in shock. I rush from the room, feeling the tears prick my eyes. There was only one place I wanted to be.

James' grave was in a secluded area of the graveyard. He was buried next to his grandparents and his dad, who died shortly after James did in a car accident.

I sat in front of his grave, cross-legged, talking to him. It was something I hadn't done in a while, not at all since the arrival of the Avengers, since I had met Bucky.

Bucky... God, what must he think of me? I thought I had control of my actions and I did, for a while.

"I really like him, James. I think you would, too. He takes care of me, like you did. I don't want him to go back to the US, James, I'd miss him too much," I'm silent for a moment, almost as though I'm expecting a reply and I know how ridiculous that is.

"I think I would have liked him," Bucky takes me by surprise, sitting next to me awkwardly mimicking my position with his legs crossed.

"Buck..."

"Maria told me you be here," he says, his eyes scanning over James' gravestone. "I wanted to check that you were okay," he says, his gaze finally dropping on me, noticing that I had been watching the whole time.

Bucky gives a soft smile, putting an arm over my shoulder and pulling me close, pressing a kiss to my head and holding me tight.

"I'm sorry about..."

"It's okay, no one was hurt," he shushes me, rocking me gently, trying to offer me any comfort that he could. "Plus, Steve kinda had it coming," he admits, laughing and prompting me to do the same. "You did the right thing, saving Lillian," he whispers, kissing my hair again, "I was so proud of you, so proud of my girl," and with just those words, everything seemed to be made better.

"How do you do that?" I question him.

"Do what?"

"Make everything better,"

"Because I love you?" He suggests. I turn to face him, shocked by his admittance. While he sounded so confident in his words, looking at him I could see the underlying shyness that he felt admitting his feelings to me.

"I love you too, Buck," I murmur, nuzzling my nose into his neck and he chuckles, picking me up and twirling me around.

"I'm glad you said that," he says as he places me down, his long hair frames his face and I reach up a hand to brush it away, grinning at him in utter joy. He leans down so that our noses are pressed together, his blue eyes sparkling in delight as he pushes his lips against mine gently at first but with gradually more and more passion.

We break apart, breathing heavily and I become acutely aware of the setting, pressing my face into Bucky's chest as he puts his arms around me.

"Come to the US with me,"
