The Little Match Girl is still one of the saddest fairy tale I've ever read.  Growing up, I didn't understand how the heroine could just die.  Yes, it has been traumatic to the seven-year-old me.  It's like sending a message that if everybody you loved died, the only way you could attain happiness is through dying, too.
