Chapter Two: Unanswered Questions

Three hours later Adam and Kevin exchanged glances as Voight approached the private room they were guarding looking furious over something. Al and Antonio following behind did not look happy either.

"What's going on?" Adam asked standing up quickly with Kevin following suit anxiously.
"He knew three of them definitely," Hank offered up, "not sure about the fourth guy."
"So the guys Rhodes saw him talking to are involved?" Kevin double checked.
"CCTV footage shows him seeming surprised to see them but he shook hands with them without hesitation," Antonio replied stealing a glance through the slightly open door at the unconscious man, "we can see where they met the fourth guy and then headed in the direction of the truck."
"Jay went willingly," Hank added as a curse alerted them to their friends' return to consciousness.
"Hey Jay you just take it easy," the Unit Leader instructed slowly advancing on the bed and gently grabbing the hands that were trying to take the nasal canula off.
"What ... the hell hit ... me?" Jay gave up the battle and stifled a groan as he sank back onto the pillow.
"Was hoping you could tell us Kid," Al carefully sat down on the side of the bed noting the pained features which were marred by deepening bruising on the left side.
"No ..." Jay suddenly sat up despite the obvious agony it caused, "Will and Ethan!!!"
"They're fine," Al reassured calmly ignoring the alarms going off and easing the younger man back down as Will rushed in with Conor on his heels.

"Jay don't go moving around you could easily cause one of your broken ribs to pierce a lung," Conor gestured for the group to stand back so he could check the patient without hindrance.
"Let me guess you tried to get up?" Will shook his head in reprimand when Al motioned for him to take his place.
"Ethan okay?" the Detective asked softly after giving his brother a once over hoping the fire in his chest would ease up.
"He's fine," Will took a hold of his siblings' hand to make sure he focussed fully on him as Conor proceeded to do some probing after pulling back the blankets and raising the gown to check the damaged ribs.
"Good," the obvious worry seemed to have sapped what little strength Jay had and he closed his eyes hoping the pain in his head would abate.
"Jay I know it will hurt but I need you to take a deep breath for me," Conor ordered after placing the pad of his stethoscope against the mans' chest.
"Shucks that's what .... they .... always say," Jay opened his eyes and looked around the room and for the first time he seemingly became aware of everyone there as he automatically pushed Conors' hand away before pulling the gown down quickly, "don't need to be on .... display," he rasped keeping his gaze on his hands.
"Everyone out," Conor ordered unnecessarily as the gathered men headed towards the door after rushed words of goodbye.
"I'm staying," Will had kept a hold of the hand in his.
"But ...," Jay began only to be interrupted.
"I know the injuries you have Jay. Let me stay," the concerned sibling gently squeezed the hand in his.
"Only if you don't fuss," Jay reluctantly agreed, "cause I'm fine."
"Course you are," Will nodded ruefully trying to ignore Conors' eyeroll at the obvious lie.
"So let's get this over with will we?" Conor once again raised the gown and got down to business.

Ten minutes later Conor and Will exited the room to be greeted by the whole unit waiting for an update.
"He's doing okay considering the beating he took. He has no memory of what happened. Last thing he remembers is telling Will he was nearly at the hospital," Conor sighed before continuing, "he's already asking about being released but I told him with the concussion it's necessary to keep him in for a while."
"So how soon can you release him Doc?" Adam asked as he carefully patted his blackening eye.
"We'll see how he is tomorrow," Conor replied, "you sure you don't want to get that checked out?"
"Nah Doc, he didn't have much force behind it," Adam grinned with a shrug.
"Well I'm just glad the plan worked," Kevin spoke up, "only way to get him out from under that truck was for him to think you needed help."
"Yeah just didn't think he'd notice Will and Adam approaching from behind - not in the condition he was in," Hank sighed in regret.
"It had to be done," Al stated pragmatically as always, "now we need to track those guys down."
"Ye don't know for sure it was them though," Conor pointed out.
"No we don't but until we talk to them we won't know."
"Doc are the shoe prints all the same size?" Al checked.
"No. There are two on his left ribcage which are the same but there's one on his back which is smaller."
"Damn," Will cursed.
"Will I promise you whoever did this will pay," Hank laid a hand on the upset mans' shoulder for a moment then turned to his team, "Al and Antonio got the next watch the rest of us will get back to the precinct to see what leads we can find."
"Hank," Wills' voice stopped the Detectives in their tracks, "thanks."
"No thanks necessary, he's family," Hank brushed off the thanks and strode away with Adam and Kevin.

Once Al and Antonio were alone the latter sank down in the chair to the right of the door.
"Think I'll sit with him a while," Al stated as he walked into the darkened room and closed the door before sitting down beside the bed and checking the peaceful features. Thanks to pain meds his friend was being given a break from the pain wracking his body but Al knew that once he awoke again he would be dealing with a different sort of pain, especially if he recalled his subconscious return to Afghanistan.
