A Brief Encounter

It all started on my way to the store...

I had finally found the nearest grocery store, which was a good thirty minute walk from home, and thirty minutes back. So an hour walking and probably an hour there at the store, about two hours tops.

I took as little time as I could and grabbed only the necessities, milk, bread, fruit, vegetables, jelly, peanut butter, my Dad's oatmeal, my Special K bars, and of course five minute rice with red sauce. I could come back later for other stuff, I just didn't trust the town yet... And it was a good thing I hadn't.

On my way back home after (trying to) ignore odd stares in the store, I ran into some trouble...

I was loaded down with groceries when I heard a scream nearby, I didn't think anything of it, I went to help(my first mistake). I peeked around a corner and into an alley, from which the scream came. I'd done some research, I didn't want to run into any of the baddies in Gotham, especially the Joker, the bloodiest one of them all.

As I edged closer around the corner I came face to face with the attacker. He snapped his fingers and before I could scream a bandanna covered my mouth, muffling any sound I could've possibly made. I learned later that the disturbing scoundrels had recorded a girl screaming to lure in unsuspecting women into the alley.

I backed up into the alley's wall with my groceries still in hand, and tried to look a little menacing and determined.

If they want an easy fight they picked the wrong girl to trick!

When suddenly the crunching of one guy's nose was made available to my ears as a black and blue figure with pale skin came crashing out of the sky.

"You three are probably the most discussing guys I've seen all day..." He retorted.

A shorter red, black, green, and yellow boy choose that moment to come down from the roof as well,"Its been a boring day, so I guess I'll thank you!" He threw quite a punch for his age as blood spewed from the newly opened wound on idiot number two's face.

Ewwwwwwww! Gross....

"Alright! But remember Robin!"

"I know, I know Nightwing!" He mimicked him,"They still have to be in a discombobulated piece for the police!" He beat the idiot to a point where he just put on the handcuffs and the guy didn't care, either that or he was unconscious by then.

But even with just the two of them they'd pulverized the three guys in under two minutes, then they'd exchanged comments to each other.

"A little slow tonight, Dick." Robin teased.

"Sorry, but I hadn't warmed up yet." Nightwing replied stretching his shoulders to emphasize his point.

That's when they noticed me, the girl halfway tied up and leaning against an alley wall with groceries in her hands.

Well this is awkward... But hopefully isn't the oddest thing they've ever seen...

Then I remembered the faces of the small group who'd tried, and failed, to gang up on me. They'd been terrified of the two. But then I smiled from beneath the bandanna.

Well I'll just stay on the good guy side, and I won't have to worry about that now will I?

Nightwing took off muffler,"Mam, are you OK?"

For once I didn't know what to say, "I guess so..."

"New to the area?" Shorty correctly guessed.

"Yep, just got here today..."

"Thought so, be more careful. We might not always be around to save the day." He'd practically punched me in the gut with that remark as he turned and used a bat gadget of some sort to reach the rooftop.

It must've shown in my expression too because Nightwing moved in to cushion the blow,"Don't take it to heart," he whispered,"he tries to look out for others, its our job." He slowly left to chase after Robin, using his own acrobatics to climb up a fire escape, leaving me alone.

With only a memory and a bandanna, I was alone... With only one thing in mind.

They are my heroes!

So I walked away unphysical harmed, but about as mentally scarred as when I saw an elephant get scratched by tiger in Africa once when I was four. I'd seen blood before, I'd seen people and animals with missing or removed fingers and such before, the world was a cruel place and I knew it... But I'd never seen a hero, super or otherwise, before...

So I grabbed my groceries and started the thirty minute walk home, adding a new thing to my mental list get adjusted to: superheroes.

Maybe I'll do some research when I get home...
