Chapter 24: The First Step

"Hello." Jinkyng comes in. I sit up.

"Hey," I reply "Wassup?"

"Umm... yes? Wait- I know this... um... I have arrived for us speak. I mean to speak." I smile, but it quickly disappears.

"Are you... alright?" she asks, concern spreading across her features.

"Yeah," I shrug. "I guess I'm just tired."

"Okay then. Well, you might want to come soon, the Queen and King have announcement to make."

"Cool," I say

"No, the temperature is at-oh, wait. This is another slang, correct?"

"Yeah."

"Cool." Jinkyng grins at the discovery of the new phrase, then she leaves. I sigh, putting on the accepted clothing before going to where Jinkyng is waiting for me.

I follow her to where a large crowd of people is gathered. Jinkyng leads me over to a special seat, and sits me down, next to Aaron. Then she stands behind me, back straight, keeping her eyes busy. A large stage area in front of us is haphazardly constructed from bare materials. I'm not even totally sure that it can hold any weight without falling to pieces. Then the lights dim. A spotlight falls on the centre of the stage, and into the spotlight steps the King and Queen. Everyone oohs and aahs, before the queen settles them with a wave from her long-fingered hand. An earpiece is handed to me, and I recognize it as a translation device. I hastily put it on, not wanting to miss anything. Then The Queen opens her mouth, and says,

"Hello, faithful citizens. I understand you are confused what we are doing on such a structure, but my most trustworthy advisors inform me that this is called a stage on earth. It is used for performances or announcements such as this, so as to capture attention from all onlookers." she then turns her head slightly and looks over to where I am seated. I lower my gaze, and when I look back up, she has turned back to where the King is sitting. I sigh and suddenly the King gets to his feet.

"We, as a people, must come together in these times of desperation. As you know, my son met a human and we have managed to bring her on board to help us destroy the humans." Aaron nudges me and I notice the king staring at me pointedly to stand up. I look to Aaron, who just smiles at me and nods. I quickly jump to my feet and as soon as I am stable, everyone around me starts clapping and I just stand there, a helpless fish inside a swarm of sharks. The queen quickly steps up and speaks into the small microphone.

"Miss Coleman will now give us a few tips on human vulnerability." as she walks away.

"I will?" I look at Aaron. He nods. I get up and walk over to the hastily prepared stage, feeling eyes boring holes in the back of my head.

"So, um..." I begin, looking to Jinkyng, who nods encouragingly, and I smile slightly. "Uh... get hurt easily... um, they have, um... soft flesh, I guess. And though they seem confident, uh, they can be very intimidated sometimes. The one thing most people are scared of, is, uh, people dying and stuff. Like if you want a human to do something against their will, uh, something that could make them, is the threat of someone important to them getting hurt or disappearing." As I pause for breath, I notice three people taking notes, their pens flying across the paper.

"Humans are also kinda sensitive." By this point, I'm not sure if I'm talking about humans or myself. "They can be very eager to protect those they love, but they can be hurt easily. Their skin is very easily bruised and some have these things called allergies which can temporarily leave the human weak, more vulnerable, and an easier target." I trail off awkwardly. I step back and I go to turn around when I hear the queen speak.

"Does anyone have any questions?"A few hands shoot up in the air. The Queen points to a muddy-coloured alien with three eyes.

"What is an allergy?"

"An allergy is like, when you... like, get sick because of certain things." The Queen points to a greenish alien with too many fingers.

"How sensitive is a human's' skin?'

"Well, the uh... the skin is the only thing protecting a human's guts, muscles, and bones. Since there is so much to protect at once, it is stretched and that makes it easier to get cuts from paper and other stuff."

The Queen points to a short and squat red alien sitting by the front of the stage.

"What else are humans afraid of?"

"Umm... it differs from each person and some can have similar fears but most people are afraid of different things." I slowly back away from the microphone stand and as I walk off stage, I feel the Queens eye staring me off the stage. Sitting back in my seat next to Aaron, he whispers to me,

"I'll meet you in your room after this." I watch as he gets up and leaves before I relax into the chair for the rest of the royals speeches.
