The New Rule

It was a peaceful day outside, not a cloud in the sky, birds chirping, and a light breeze to contrast the heat of the sun. Despite the nice weather, there wasn't a soul outside enjoying the peaceful land. Everyone could be found in the common room of the smash mansion, where there was a yammer between the smashers. The hands in charge just changed a rule; pets were now allowed. No more than two smaller animals - no bigger than a cat (i.e. two greyhounds in one dorm weren't allowed) - and if they made any commotion, it was the owners' responsibility.

As soon as the announcement was given, the smashers ran off to find their dorm mate to figure out what animal should accompany them. Master Hand, on the contrary, stood still and hoped he wouldn't regret this decision.

Link strolled through the common room, giving Marth a high five as he passed by and Zelda a thumbs up, who waved and returned the hand gesture. He stopped when a pomsky was held up in his face by a certain red-headed swordsman. Link smiled and took the pomsky from Roy's hands and gave the puppy a light scratch behind his ear and the pomsky let out a happy bark. The little dog turned his head towards the child walking up to the two, causing the dog's tail to wag. Link took the hint and handed the little animal to Lucus, who happily hugged the dog and let out a little giggle as the puppy licked his face.

Link let out a soft chuckle. Everyone in the smash manor knew Link had a soft spot for animals, so it was no surprise he was part of the group trying to allow pets in the mansion. He - along with Zelda, Roy, Marth, Lucina, Rosalina, Yoshi, and Olimar - had been working on a plan to convince the hands in charge to finally give in, and to everyone's surprise, it finally worked.

"That's only the first of many hyperactive creatures to join the smash community," Roy chuckled.

"No kidding," Princess Peach chimed in making her way to the two fighters. "I just can't believe you all were able to convince the hands to allow pets, they seemed very inflexible when it came to pets in the mansion."

"Yeah, well what can I say," Roy started, slinging an arm around Link's shoulder, "we were just speaking for the people. They had to listen at some point."

"Well as shocking as it is, I've got to thank you all," Peach turned her head and looked around the room, noticing the number of smashers in the room was much smaller than a couple of minutes before. "Perhaps thanking everyone else could wait till later. I've got to find Mario and get a little companion from the Mushroom Kingdom before Master Hand changes his mind." And with that, the princess said her goodbyes and quickly, but formally, made her way to Mario and the couple sped off to a portal.

"She's got a point," Roy said, taking his arm off of Link and turning to face him. "I'm surprised you're still here, animal lover. What kind of animal are you planning on getting? Or animals? You thinking of a Huskey, or perhaps two gerbils? Knowing you, we might see a chicken running around the mansion."

The hero in green smirked. "No, I actually had something else in mind."

The red-head just stared at Link waiting for him to continue. When he didn't, Roy raised an eyebrow, "Well?"

"Don't you have a monkey to find and train how to fart on command or something?"

Roy's eyes widened. "I haven't even thought of that!" Roy ran towards Marth and Ike and grabbed their wrists to drag them outside. "We'll finish this conversation later!"

Link snorted and rolled his eyes, watching as Roy dragged the two confused swordsmen out of his vision. Link made his way out of the common room and headed to his dorm. He wasn't in a rush to get a puppy or a bird or anything. As excited as he was that they were able to alter the rule, that was the easy part. Now came the hard part: convincing Pit. Pit had nothing against animals, quite frankly, he really liked helping Link take care of injured animals or playing with the wild animals that came into Ordon when he went to visit his boyfriend. He even owns two unicorns. As much as he liked animals, whenever the topic of a house pet came up, he was always less than pleased. Link couldn't really blame his boyfriend either, he couldn't count how many times a dog mistook his wings as a play toy or a cat saw them as a cat scratcher. Even birds would sometimes peck, which baffled them both. Yet, Link was determined to change the mind of the cherub.

Link reached his door and went inside the rather large living quarters. Each dorm room was practically the size of a small house, Link's room being one of the nicest since he is one of the original twelve. There were two bedrooms (Though one wasn't as occupied) with a bathroom connecting the two, a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, and a small laundry room.

The hero of Twilight plopped down on his bed and turned his head to the window and the sky above. He still had an hour or two before Pit got back from accompanying his goddess in a meeting with other gods. Perhaps he'll think of something by then.

----

Pit entered his room, noticing his mate laying on the bed staring off into space. Pit closed the door and made his way to the bed, laying down and snuggling under Link's arm.

Link turned his attention to the light being on his stomach and smiled softly, a smile which was returned by his companion.

"What are you thinking about?" Pit asked after a moment.

"You," Link snaked his hand into Pit's soft brown locks. "How was the meeting?"

"Long, just gods checking to make sure everyone is doing their part and staying in check to avoid another Uprising."

"Sounds fun," Link ruffled the boy's hair and sat up. "You want to take a walk?"

Pit perked up at that last word. "Getting out sounds great!" The angel stood up and stretched, waiting for his boyfriend to do the same.

Link stood up and led Pit out of the room and to a portal to Hyrule. Once the two were through the portal, they found themselves in Hyrule castle. They made small chat as they made their way out of the castle and to the shops around, stopping by most and admiring whatever was being sold or engaging in conversation with familiar faces. Hours passed by, and soon enough the sun started setting. One by one, shops started packing up for the night and the Hyrulians started heading home.

Link looked up at the setting sun and the stores still open, then turned to his boyfriend. "One more then we call it a night?"

Pit nodded, waving goodbye to the Goron selling hot spring water. He turned his gaze to Link. "Where to?"

The Hylian scanned the area and spotted a small pet store that seemed to still be open. Link grabbed Pit's hand and headed to the small corner. Meanwhile, Pit just let himself be dragged to whatever location Link was set on.

The door to the pet store opened and the sound of different animals was heard all at once. Once Link stopped, Pit took in his surroundings, looking at the birds, the hyper dogs, the sleepy rabbits, and finally at Link. Link smiled happily at the animals around him. Pit let out a little giggle at his boyfriend's reaction. Pit let go of his hand and followed Link around the store until they both stopped at the kitten exhibit.

There were many types of cats in the open glass pen, but one light orange tabby kitten caught the angel's eye. The little creature was laying in what looked like an uncomfortable position against the glass right next to the comfy beds while all the other kittens ran around wanting attention from the two guests. Pit nudged Link to get his attention. "That one's like you," he pointed to the orange kitten. "Sleeping anywhere at any time in any position."

Link feigned being hurt. He looked back at the fluffballs and noticed a black kitten hissing at a white one, who returned the favor and batted the dark one on the head.

"There's you and Pittoo," Link pointed to the pair of kittens, laughing at Pit's face.

"We don't act like that!" Link raised an eyebrow. Pit crossed his arms, "Well... I don't act like that!"

Not a second later, the two let out one final hiss, turned around and sulked. Pit stared wide-eyed as the cats practically just reenacted his and Dark Pit's argument they had earlier that morning, ending in the same pouty manor.

"Pff," Link picked up the sulking kitten and held him to his face. The little feline looked back at the blond, mewing softly. "He's got really bright blue eyes." Link put the cat right next to Pit, looking between the two, "Like a certain someone." The Hylian turned the kitten around and held him in Pit's face, touching their noses.

Pit took the kitten from Link's hands. He stared at the blue-eyed kitty for a couple of seconds, then looked up at Link with an unamused look. "This kitten...This trip to Hyrule, doesn't have anything to do with the new pet rule, does it?"

Link stood still, "What new pet rule?"

Pit's eyes narrowed. Link was never a good liar. "Roy came up to Lady Palutena and me with a monkey holding a banana in one hand and a rat in the other."

Link blinked. "Well, that's his two choices. And he was giving me shit about what I would get," Pit scowled. Link smiled nervously, "I mean...How about that?"

"..."

Pit's glare was broken by a soft meow coming from inside the glass pen. The two humanoids looked over and saw the previously sleeping tabby kitten meowing at them. The white kitten joined the orange cat, pawing towards him. Pit looked at the two, then softly placed the kitty back.

The two kittens walked around each other. The white kitten jumped on the orange cat, both playing around, happily meowing at the other. They kept at it for a minute or two before the white feline laid down and the tabby cat laid next to him and slowly licked the white kitty's ear.

Link and Pit stood there, baffled. Slowly, Pit reached his hand out to the white kitten and picked him up, staring deep into the kitten's eyes, who in return meowed at the angelic being. Pit put his wing out flat underneath the living creature and softly placed him on the feathery appendage. The kitten pawed at the soft surface, quickly getting a nail stuck. He tried to pull his paw back, only to have Pit help him unhook his claw. Once again, the orange kitten meowed for the other, so Pit carefully grabbed the cat and placed him by the other.

The two kittens got comfortable and continued their calming actions. Pit grabbed a white paw and scanned it for a couple of seconds. Pit sighed, "If this one is like me, and this one is like you... then I guess they shouldn't be separated, hmm?"

Link's eyes widened. "Does that mean...?"

Pit picked up the tabby kitten, "But you're teaching them how to use the litter box," he wiggled the orange cat's front paws in Link's face, "And how to control these suckers when it comes to my wings."

"Done!" Link leaned forward and claimed Pit's lips in a passionate kiss. Link quickly pulled away, still gleaming, "Thank you!"

Pit let out a dazed "Mhmm," as Link went up the store owner. Pit looked down at the two furry animals, who looked back at him with big eyes. Pit scratched the tabby's head. "I guess I have always wanted a house pet." The two furballs meowed in content.

----

The two archers laid on Link's bed and watched as the two baby kittens chased each other. Link pulled Pit closer to him and whispered into his ear, "Thank you."

Pit laughed, "That's the seventh time you've thanked me this week, and we've only had them for three days!" Pit rested his head on his boyfriend's chest.

"I know, but I really am thankful."

The peaceful moment was ruined when the couple's attention was distracted by a voice coming from the hallway, "Dammit! Who gave Roy the idea to get a monkey?!?" Link sunk into the bed.

Pit turned to the hero, "You told him to get a monkey?"

Link smiled innocently. "I might have mentioned it... and to train it to fart."

Pit snorted, "Why?"

"I didn't think he would actually do it..." The two laughed.

"Are you kidding? It's Roy we're talking about!" The two settled down after a moment and Pit rested his head on Link again. "That monkey's not gonna be here for long."

Link thought for a minute. "I give it another week."

More yelling could be heard outside their room. "I give it two more days." Link nodded in agreement. Pit looked up at his boyfriend, "I like his rat though."

"I haven't met his rat yet. Perhaps we should pay him a visit."

Pit nodded and moved his hand to get up until a monkey screech caught their attention. The two stayed still in silence for a minute before Pit laid back down.

"Later," the two simultaneously said. They have their own animals to give attention to.
