Chapter 8

The sun wasn't shinning as brightly now as it had been earlier on. It had nearly faded completely and dark grey clouds had now appear in the sky making the world suddenly darker. They were heavy, threatening rain.

"Please, let him be home," Jane prayed out loud, as she walked up the pathway to his house. She took a deep breath, then rang the doorbell.

Jane heard the doorbell ring and waited. No response. Jane gave the doorbell another press. Maybe he wasn't home from school yet.

"Jane!" Jane turned around to see Scott standing behind her at the top of the path. His voice was sharp and his face looked as hard and cold as stone.

Suddenly, Jane felt nervous. She though that apologising, making up with him would be easy, but the look on his face, and the tone of his voice suggested otherwise.

"I..." Jane swallowed hard, lost for words.

"What do you want Jane?" His voice was angry and he spoke through gritted teeth.

"I'm sorry!" Jane blurted out. "I'm so sorry for the losing my temper with you. For saying the things I did and for slamming the door in your face."

"I don't understand Jane," Scott said. "I don't understand why you've been acting the way that you have. Does it really bother you that much that I'm friends with Jaz? I don't know what's come over you lately. I don't like the new Jane. I don't like her at all." His voice was still sharp, like the tip of a knife.

"I know," Jane replied, her voice was soft. His words stung.

"Why?"

"I... I can't tell you. I sorry, I just can't."

"Why not? Why can't you? Please Jane, just tell me!" Scott cried.

Jane swallowed hard, they were standing closer together now. Both standing in front of the house door. She looked at Scott's exasperated face. She had to tell him the truth. If not, she could risk losing her best friend, forever. Her heart was racing fast, beating so hard against her chest she wouldn't have been surprised if it had burst out of her body.

"I'm in love with you." The words came out in a rush, and Jane could feel her cheeks turning red, as they started to burn.

Scott didn't say anything.

"We've been friends for a long time," Jane proceeded and over that time my feelings for you have grown stronger. That's why I was so angry about you hanging around with Taz. I was jealous. But I'm sorry, it was wrong of me. You can be friends with anyone you want to be. You can have feelings for whoever you want to."

Scott's expression still hadn't changed as the door to the house suddenly opened.

"Scott, you're home! Jane, it's good to see you. I heard the doorbell ring but I was in the middle of having a nice relaxing bubble bath. It's so nice to get a day off from work in the middle of the week." Trish said, unaware of the tension in the air. Suddenly, she looked confused. "But Scott, you have a key."

"I better be going." Scott said, ignoring his mum's sudden outburst and Jane's heartfelt apology. And with that, he disappeared into the house, slamming the door shut in Jane's face. Just like she had done to yesterday, too him.
