Chapter 37 | A very Happy New Year

Real World, still Third Person POV
"CoRecT, bUt doN't woRrY, MisS tAlL, whItE aNd SexY. We'Re haNdlIng iT" a voice spoke, echoing around the room.
"Nightmare" Slenda groaned. "Lovely to hear you again" she added, rolling her eyes.
"WeLl yOu'D bE abLe tO sEe mE iF yOu lOoK inTo tHe flAmE oVeR tHe kiD" he said with a chuckle. And he was right too. The large blue flame emerging from your unconscious form showed showed a clear image of Nightmare in the arena, sipping from a glass of champagne.
"You said 'we're' but it doesn't look like you're doing much" Slenda said, crossing her arms.
"WeLl wE bOtH hAd oUr seTs oF opPoNenTs" he responded with a shrug.
"He looks familiar..." Sally said, scratching her head.
"Looks a lot like (Y/N) now that you mention it..." Jess added.
"ThaNkS, SmIleY" he responded. "GlaD tO knOw tHesE coPyCat sKillS haVeN't gOnE tO wasTe" he added smugly, running a hand through his hair. "BuT anYwAy, I fiNiSheD mY fIghT aNd tHe kiD iS aboUt tO clEaN hoUsE wiTh thEsE CoLosSi" Nightmare explained calmly, taking another sip of his champagne.
"Colossi!?" Slenda exclaimed worriedly. "As in plural!?" She added, the worry on her face and in her voice becoming more prominent.
"What are Colossi?" Sally asked, a look of worry appearing on her face.
"Giant creatures, thought to be extinct. They're more of a class than a race, but they're, in short, much larger versions of things you'd find here on Earth. Some humanoid-"
"WhiCh tHe kId iS curRenTlY aSs-kiCkInG" Nightmare interrupted.
"Some humanoid..." Slenda repeated, grunting in frustration. "Some not, such as lizards or fish, along with other variations. However, they bleed black blood and can only be injured if attacked on very specific parts of its body, and those locations are different per Colossus" Slenda explained.
"YeaH, sOmeTimEs tHey'Re oN tHe baCk, thE aRm, lEg, wHatEve- KID!" Nightmare interrupted himself as his attention was drawn away from the 'lesson'. "tHis craZy sOnoVa bItcH..." Nightmare mumbled, his eyes full of astonishment. "YoU neEd tO sEe thIs!" Nightmare exclaimed, turning his point of contact like a camera on a tripod towards you and the action. The flame-screen the girls were watching quickly grew to the size of a wall, almost like they were watching on a projector.

Meanwhile, from (Y/N)'s POV
I felt a warm sensation as I was trying to direct my magic to my sword. Opening my eyes, I saw that my arms were covered in the same blue flames that I was trying to direct. Grunting in exertion, I pushed the katana even deeper as I felt the fire forming in my hands once more. As I tried to channel it into a point of focus, the heat in my hands grew hotter and hotter until I felt it coursing through my body. 'Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate concentrate concentrate concentrateconcentrateconcentrate...' I repeated in my head, putting all of my energy into in.
"KID!" I heard Nightmare yell out, breaking my focus.
'Shit...' I thought, flinging myself up to the top of of the beast. "What do you want?" I asked telepathically, turning to face the rest of my enemies.
"I saId foCuS tO a poInT, noT tHrOugH yoUr wHolE boDy" he said, a hint of disappointment in his voice. "I mEan, jUsT loOk doWn aT yOurSeLf aNd yoU'lL sEe wHaT I mEaN" he sort of explained. Confused, but trusting his pre-existing knowledge, I looked down at myself to see that I was cloaked in blue flames.
"Shouldn't my clothes be on fi-"
"On FiRe? NoPe, maGiC rEsiStaNce. iT's paRt oF yOuR 'uPgrAdE'" he explained, cutting me off in the process. "NoW, kId! YOu goTtA foCuS!" He yelled, doing his best to be motivational.
"Right!" I exclaimed, my powers now being charged with bravado.

Holding the hilt of my katana with both of my hand, I stood in a readied stance and closed my eyes. 'Focus it to a single point...' I thought, swiftly quelling my aura of fire before relighting my hands and trying to channel it into the blade. I felt my hands grow hotter and hotter and I opened my eyes to see that my hands and the hilt were coated in flame. 'Not good enough' I thought, stopping my magic and taking a deep breath. I was going to try again, but seconds before I closed my eyes I watched as my original giant enemy was now wielding his and his teammate's weapons and he was bringing them both in from the sides. "Shit!" I exclaimed, jumping up to avoid the impact. As I soared up, I felt one of the bats clip the heel of my shoe and causing me to tumble slightly. "Oh fuUUUUUCK!" I yelled, that slight tumble turning into me plummeting straight to the ground. I looked around me in a panic, hoping to see something I could grab.

But to no avail.

As I kept falling and falling, I admittedly began to lose hope that I'd make it out of here despite still trying to find a way to save myself. I stopped looking after passing about halfway, hoping that when I was to splat it would be painless and fast. 'Am I... really dying here?...' I wondered, parts of my new life flashing before my eyes. The sound of the world faded away and was replaced with the rhythmic thumping of my own heartbeat, and as my eyes slowly closed to cover up the world around me I began trying to finally make peace with myself. 'It wasn't a lot, but I did... alright' I thought, remembering my first patrol. But pretty quickly, my train of thought was cut short.
"KiD!" A familiar, distorted and demonic voice called out, his voice tearing through the silence. "YoU quIttIn' nOw?" His voice echoed, making me turn to where he was stood. I saw Jess, Sally, Ann and Slenda all looking at me with worry and anticipation. "No wAy I'M leTtiNg yoU gIvE uP noW!" He added, his tone full of expectation. "YOu eVeR waNnA sEe yOuR giRl agAiN?" He asked, grabbing my full attention. "ThEn yOu bEtTeR reAcH oUt, anD KiCk! sOmE! AsS!" He yelled, his barbaric words piercing my heart.

As Nightmares words resonated with me, my mind flashed back to the beginning of this battle. And then it hit me, I remembered how Nightmare caught the sledgehammer. When he saved me and I looked over to him, I saw that a shadow arm was stretched out of his and he used it to grab the hammer. 'Reach out!' I repeated, seeing 'New power unlocked: Shadow Stretch' on my HUD along with my realisation. "It's now or never!" I exclaimed, furrowing my brow and holding my arms out whilst hoping to whatever god there was that this was going to work. As both of my arms fully extended, I felt a bubbling wave of ice cold energy go through my arms. I watched as wavy rings of shadows moved up each of my arms and when they reached my wrist, turning into shadow arms that extended out and gripped one of the bats that crushed the head I was previously on. "WOOHOO!" I yelled valiantly, swinging like an ape on a vine as I felt my feet almost touch the ground.

Luckily for me, the creature still kept its bats level as it breathed heavily after crushing its now falling comrades skull. I swung my way back through and I managed to loop myself back up onto the height of the bat, as I let go of my grip I did a backflip and yet another three point landing. 'No more mister nice vigilante' I thought, sprinting along the weapon once again and smiling at my title. Drawing my pistol, I shot two rounds into its left eye as I ran towards the right. 'Ten, eleven, and that's what I'm crankin' it up to!' I thought, holstering my pistol before pulling out and throwing my wakizashi into the creature's right eye and causing it to reel back in pain from both of its eyes being attacked. As it reacted to the attack, I was once again flung into the air. "Not this time!" I yelled, using a shadow hand to latch on and pull myself towards the deeply buried wakizashi. With the momentum I gained, the weapon was torn from the eye and pulled back into my hand as I soared above the creature. I was roughly twenty feet above the beast when the wakizashi came to my hand, so I held it above my head with both hands and as I landed I slammed it down on a glowing point I saw on its head. Knowing I had the advantageous position, I closed my eyes and focused on the blade of my weapon. I thought of the design of it in my mind, doing my best to picture the whole shape in comparison to where my hands were. 'Focus... focus and concentrate...' I thought, doing my best to channel the power in a much gentler fashion. I felt a thin line of heat emerge from my palms and trail down the hilt of my weapon. Opening my eyes, I watched as the flames coiling around my wrists began to snake past the hilt and wrap themselves around the blade that was fully buried in the head of this creature. I pulled the blade out slightly to see that its edges were coated in blue flame.

Plunging the blade back into the creature, I gripped the hilt even tighter and tried to channel my magic in a more aggressive manor. With a twist and a push, I forced the flames to lash out, some of them even bursting up through the wound before going back to the blade itself. As the flames burst out, the creature swung its arms in a blind frenzy.

Meanwhile, back in Ann's Office in Third Person
"What is he doing!?" Sally yelled, tensing all over in worry and anticipation.
"I have no idea!" Ann responded, worried and confused.
"He'S leaRniNg..." Nightmare said simply, his tone almost proud.
"Learning? Learning what?" Slenda asked, looking at you with bewilderment and awe.
"This sounds fresh outta a 90's movies..." a familiar voice cringed from the door. "Lemme watch!" It added, with Benny squeezing in between the group as she chugged the beer she was holding before grabbing another out of her phone.
"He'S gaIniN' sOmE cOntRoL oF mY poWeR. aNd aS muCh aS I haTe tO aDmiT iT, hE's dOin' wElL" he explained, crossing his arms as he did so.

"He is!?" Jess exclaimed, her tone full of several emotions at once. "Why!? How!? Wha!?" She added, wanting answers to questions she wasn't sure how to phrase.
"He jUsT neEdeD a lItTle... moTivAtIoN, tHat'S aLl" Nightmare explained vaguely.
"Oh? And what was that?" Slenda asked, hoping to be able to help you train this ability.
"LoVe" he responded plainly. "As clIchÉ aS iT iS" he groaned.
"Love? Seriously?" Benny slurred skeptically.
"WeLl tHe onLy reAsoN hE's sTiLl figHtInG iS beCauSe I brOugHt uP SmIleS" he said, looking at Jess when she was mentioned.
"M-me?" Jess asked, blushing a light pink.
"YuP, hIs gIrLfrIenD" he added simply.
"Lucky bitch..." Sally grumbled jealously.
"WoAh!" Nightmare exclaimed, dropping his champagne glass. "NevEr exPectEd tHaT frOm yOu" he said, baffled at Sally's sudden outburst.
"A lot of us girls feel like that, especially considering Jess was the first after everything that happened between them both" Slenda explained, causing Jess to look at the ground shamefully.
"ThAt'S whAt I saId tO hIm!" Nightmare exclaimed, remembering your conversation before you left. "BuT, I thInK hE rEallY dOeS hoLd yOu deAr, weIrdO" He added, looking at Jess once again. "JuSt loOk, hE's fIghTinG tHiS haRd tO avOiD tHe FutUrE wE saW. He cAn't beAr tO sEe yOu uPseT anYmorE" he explained, looking back towards you as he spoke. "It'S alL iN tHe naMe oF lOvE" he finalised, keeping his attention on analysing your moves.
"For love? For me?" Jess asked, to no one in particular. "What an idiot..." she added as a bashful smile spread across her face.

Back to (Y/N)'s POV
As the beast swung its arms an idea, better than all of my others, formed in my mind. 'What if I...?' I thought as as pulled the sword to my left, causing the beast to jerk in the same direction. 'Does that mean...?' I moved the sword forward as if it was a joystick, and much to my pleasure the creature began to stomp its way forward - directly to its comrades. 'Oh fuck the hell yes...' I thought, throwing this creature into a full sprint. As it got closer to the rest of its colossal comrades I sent a pulse of flame through my weapon once again, making the creature roar and wildly swing the dual weapons it kept a tight grip on. The first attack immediately collided with the skulls of another enemy pair, tossing them to the floor as they bled out on the way down, spewing their black blood everywhere as their bodies crushed the rest of the Shamblers. 'Oh that is kick ASS!' I thought, getting very excited to keep trying out this 'toy' for as long as it lasted.

Pulling back for a second, I counted that there were still two more pairs of enemies. Although this wasn't counting their even larger, and assumed, leader. As I was counting, another pair rushed me, flanking from the left and right with their bats ready to strike. I pulled back on my hilt with such speed, the beast took a small leap back and managed to dodge, causing their weapons to collide and shatter in an explosion of rocky debris and dust. As the dust poofed up and clouded, the vision of both me and my adversaries was obscured. 'No matter' I thought, holding out my free hand. 'Let's see how well I can control these...' I thought forming a fireball in said hand. I aimed it into the middle of the cloud and when it reached the centre, I clenched my hand into a fist and watched as the blue ball exploded into flames, the explosive shockwave clearing out the smoke. With a smirk at my success, I made my creature attack once again, easily crushing the two opponents who stood together.

As they dropped, I was charged at by one of the last pair. I did my best to move, but it was faster and more nimble than anticipated and it collided with the left arm of the beast I was atop. It roared in pain as a loud crunch could be heard from around its elbow and it retaliated with a swing of its own, bringing its force down and crushing the skull of my enemy of its own free will. As we regained our balance, I saw the other giant dashing in with its weapon raised, ready to attack the other arm. I tried to move my creature back but before I could get very far, its right arm had already taken the impact and therefore rendered its ability to attack useless. "Fuck!" I exclaimed, losing my balance once again. As I tripped, I tightened my grip on my weapon but as I fell I ripped it out of the creature's head - finally killing it. I felt it begin to stumble whilst I tried to catch myself, making it even harder than before. As black blood started spraying everywhere I got disoriented and covered in the fluid, causing me to slip and fall off of the already toppling beast. As I began my descent, I looked over to see that the 'big boss' of the giants had moved in closer with my current attacker not too far in front. 'Need to be fast' I thought, reaching out for the lackey's bat. As my shadow arm extended, I did my best to be cautious of the larger enemy. It was at least double, if not triple, the height of the others. I used the bat as a point to swing off of as to gain as much height as possible, which paid off considerably when it swung and missed, giving me a larger amount of leverage.

I soared up to the boss creature's upper chest and once I was at the apex of my height, I used all of my strength and slammed my blade right into the creature's chest. As the weapon pierced its flesh, I did my best to keep moving. Gripping and pulling at the beast's fur/hair, I made my way up and tried my hardest to once again reach the creature's head. I used my wakizashi as a climbing pick as stabbed and pulled at its chest, clambering up as around it, dodging its smacks against its own body as it tried to swat me like a fly. As I stood up on its shoulder, I looked up to see its eyes locked onto me and its hand's colossal shadow looming over. It came down faster than I realised, but luckily enough I managed to glitch through it in time, leaving me on the back of his hand. Looking around, I saw that this beast was much more alert than the others. The second I was on the back of its hand, it began to move again, attempting to shake me off. "Gotta act fast!" I yelled, spinning for momentum before underarm throwing my blade into its eye.

As it recoiled slightly, I knew I was going to need more force. Holding my hands to my side once more, only keeping them there for a short moment, I lunged them forward once more and threw one large ball of flames centred on the hilt of my weapon, forcing it all the way through the eye and possibly severing the optic nerve. The moment the attack hit, the creature reared its head back and stumbled, leaving me an opening. Drawing my attention back to its arm, I saw several glowing symbols lined up the appendage and they were exactly the same as the one on the head of the one I controlled. Determined to end this quickly, I drew one of my katanas and I slammed it into the centre of the glowing symbol that I was stood on, and I did my best to quickly light my sword despite the spurts of black blood erupting out of the wound. The second I saw the flames line the blade, I gripped the sword tight and sprinted along the arm of this boss, making the flames burst out whenever I felt resistance along my path.

When I passed each symbol, they all faded as I slashed through them and by the time I reached the beast's other shoulder, its whole arm was spraying its black blood like there were pressure hoses inside. As I began to climb up to the head, I felt the beast's weight shift as its entire arm went limp, all of its liquid contents spilling to the floor. After regaining my balance for the umpteenth time, I finally climbed atop the head and as I stood up there I saw the glowing symbol from before, however this one was much bigger and brighter than the others despite its light being covered by the beasts thick, fur-like hair. Raising the katana above my head, I plunged it down through the centre of the symbol once again.

But it's never that easy.

As the blade plunged through the beast and it grunted in pain, a volley of arrows came my way. Some missing entirely, some hitting the beast and others I had to dodge. I was lucky to have the first one come early, only for it to miss and alert me. After I thought the volley was over, I turned to the enemies to see (and hear) a ballista bolt was fired and heading my way. Without thinking, I drew my second sword and pulled out the first from the creature's head simultaneously and crossed them in front of me. 'Wait for it...' I thought, staring at it as it was coming towards me. 'Just a little more...' I waited, holding my stance patiently. The ballista bolt got closer, and closer, and closer, until it was about two feet away from my face. "Jackpot!" I exclaimed as I swung both of the blades out and up, knocking the bolt up and letting it tumble through the air before it fell back down and, with my help, impaled the creature where I had already stabbed it but at the same time making me drop both blades. By the time I had noticed, the creature began to move again and my swords had already fallen out of sight. "It's now or never..." I mumbled, crouching low and doing my best to focus the magic to my feet. I pushed off of the ground and jumped as high as I could, doing my best to shoot flames from my feet to give me an extra boost along with the assistance of my shadow arms using the bolt as a launching platform. I launching into the air once again and looking down I saw that I was directly over the creature's wound and I had to end things quickly.

I held my hands to my waist again, letting the fire charge itself up for what I was hoping to be my final attack. And that was when I heard yells and clanging metal ring out around the arena. Looking to the wall, I watched as bowmen diverted their aim from me to a figure that was cutting down their forces with incredible power and speed. 'Trying to show me up?' I thought, knowing who my only ally here was. "Like I'd let that happen!" I yelled, the flames at my side growing bigger and hotter than the rest of my others. "Take... This!" I yelled, pouring all of my power into this attack. The beam was double the size of my first and even propelled me up slightly as I watched it tear through the ballista bolt and vaporise the head and upper half of this creature's torso, leaving a cauterised crater in its body. As the beam cleared and I began to fall back down, I watched as the creature started to fall with me and in a moment of childish joy, I thought of a way to get back down safely without hurting myself or my Smokin' Sexy Style. Reaching out to the creature's right arm, a shadow arm stretched out and hooked itself inside of the beasts still bleeding and gaping arm wound. As it latched on, a pulse of pain shot through my arm and made me grip it in pain to make sure I could keep a hold. As I swung and looped around to the back of my falling foe, I saw a white bar next to my health flashing a light red and reading 'Mana: Empty', showing me why magic was getting more and more difficult to use. 'C'mon body, don't fail me now!' I thought, putting all of my effort into my swing.

I made it onto the abnormally hairy back of the creature and using my real hands, I gripped on tight for most of the ride down. But the body got lower and lower, I began to find my footing and let go before I started running up/along the back of monster's corpse after spotting the other giant doing its best to try and escape a collision with this falling beast. As I ran and ran and ran, I watched as the last enemy was almost out of the range of the falling behemoth. With a yell of exertion, I sprinted as fast as I could up the incline and as I made it to edge I dove as far as I could and made it over the enemy I was 'chasing'. As I soared over its head and dropped into its line if sight, I gave it a wink as I drew my pistol and perfectly placed a shot in the centre of its eye. As the bullet left the chamber, it seemed much more powerful than all of the others. It rocketed forward faster than anything I'd ever seen and it was coated in fire like a meteor entering a planet's atmosphere, all before going through its eye and splatting its brains out behind it and leaving the true behemoth to crush its corpse. "That's twelve... and I am so touching myself tonight" I said smugly.

I looked to the ground and reached out, a shadow arm darting for the floor as pain darted up my arm at an equal speed. The hand at the end latched its clawed fingers into the ground and pulled me down to the ground, accelerating me downwards, but as I hit the floor I tucked and rolled and somehow I got up completely unscathed. With a satisfactory smile on my face, I walked over to where Nightmare was once again stood. Much to my confusion, he was waiting next to an odd-looking flame portal that showed every girl in the mansion watching me in anticipation. I kept walking in the same direction, more or less headed straight for them, and with a quick gun twirl my weapon was in front of my face and pointed up. "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals" I said as I blew the smoke off of the gun cockily before spinning and holstering it. I then pointed gun fingers behind me, and made it 'shoot' the enemies behind as they hit the floor together, making my coat flap up dramatically. "And a Happy New Year" I added, my coat elegantly dropping back down.

But then slow applause began to echo around the arena. "Even if this fight is won, our battle is not over..." Zalga said angrily.
"Watch out!" All the girls yelled out in unison, but it was too late. I was struck by what felt like several appendages piercing my back. As I dropped to my knees, I turned back to see every colossal corpse had black, misty tendrils coming out and they were all locked on to me.
"Ha, stupid Man-Thing" Zalga scoffed. Within moments, they all attacked me and I had passed out.

"Like he said, Happy New Year, ladies"
