Chapter 5: The Battle

A/N: I went ahead and added the song she sings in the thingy above. Whatever it's called. Anyways, thank you all for reading! It means so much to me. There may not be many chapters in this book, but on average each chapter is like 10 pages long, on google docs , soooooooo. I also will be adding a couple filler scenes here and there, so please don't yell at me for changing things too much. Thank you all so much. :)

Charlotte finally calmed down, and accepted the circumstances were inevitable. She went to lay down. After sitting there for about an hour, she realized it was hopeless. She would be receiving no sleep that night, under the concrete ceiling. She looked around at the other people sleeping. It probably isn't best that she won't get any rest before a big battle. They were to wake in two hours time. A tired soldier is never good. After turning over a couple times more, she stood up. Creeping over sleeping bodies, she started to wander the how. She ended up on the ledge, sitting where her and Peter were a few hours before. For some reason, sitting up there, she thought about a song, her mother used to sing to her. That was before she died. It was a lullaby, that doubled as a waltz. The song always makes her cry, but she couldn't get it out of her head. She made sure she was away from where everyone was sleeping. Quietly, she started to sing.

"Words we have said

Grew in my head

Colored my thoughts

Sang to me in bed

Lost memories

Grew into trees

Covered the doors

Swallowed the key" She closed her eyes and started to cry. Her mother meant so much to her.

"Winters have come and gone

You know

Winters have come and gone

You know

But I'll meet you young and free

For a dance 'round the memory tree

Said I forgot

But I did not

Dreams we had

Play in my head

Did we believe

The cry of the leaves?

Would we forget?

Winters have come and gone

You know

Winters have come and gone

You know

But I'll meet you young and free

For a dance 'round the memory tree"

On the last verse she couldn't hold it in any longer. She missed her mother. She only had a short time with her, but it was the best few years of her life. It was always so hard for her, growing up without a mother, or parents for that matter. No one to be there.

"That was beautiful." A voice said making Charlotte jump. She didn't know anyone was listening.

"Don't scare someone on the edge of something." She said, desperately trying wipe away tears when she realized who it was. He smiled at her, his smile fading when the light of the torch caught her face just right, the tears glistening in the radiance of the fire.

"Are you okay?" Peter asked sitting next to her.

"I-I'm fine." She said faking a smile.

"Then why are you crying?" He asked, confused.

"That song is just sad."

"Then why sing it?" He questioned. She stayed silent.

"I opened up to you. It's okay to have the situation be two sided."

"It's the only thing I have left of my mother." She blurted, starting to cry again.

"I'm sorry, I really shouldn't be crying in front of you."

"Don't be. I have sisters, I can handle it." He said kindly.

"I doubt they cry very often though. They are all so courageous. So strong. Like nothing in the world could bother them." She said.

"You are too." He said.

"Not always. As you can see." She gestured to her tear-stained face, laughing slightly.

Charlotte looked at the floor, tracing circles on the ground. A piece of hair fell over her face. Peter reached out and tucked the strand behind her right ear. She looked up at him, and saw him smiling, comfortingly. This is the first time in a while she had actually felt safe. She shook off the feeling quickly, telling herself it was just a friendly gesture.

"So, what are you doing up?" She inquired.

"Shouldn't you be resting before battle."

"I couldn't sleep. I was worried, going over plans, stressing. Everything has got me so worked up." He said.

"You are going to do fine. You have this all under control. I will just warn you, it will not be easy."

"I understand, as long as we all stick to the plan it should work."

"I'm nervous, Peter." Charlotte spoke softly, as the young man scooted closer. He puts an arm around her giving her a side hug.

"Me too." He said. Her head laid in his chest.

They sat that way until they fell asleep in one another's embrace. It was short lived, but every bit wonderful. When Charlotte woke up everyone else was bustling about, below them. She looked at the Young King sleeping beside to her.

"Peter, wake up. Peter." She said softly shaking him.

"Hm, What?" He said, eyes fluttering open.

"Peter, everyone else is getting ready. They need you." She said. He looked at her, quickly standing.

"At least we got some sleep." he laughed, before running off. Charlotte took a send realizing she felt happy, for the first time in a long time. Just sitting there hugging him made her feel better. If it was that easy for him to comfort her, that boy could do wonders.

Charlotte ran down to the archers station, with great haste. She helped them load up the ammunition, discuss plans, and armor all of the soldiers up. It was established Charlotte was to care for Caspian. She was to have his back as he led the troops in the courtyard, while Peter, and Susan went for Miraz. This would be a gory battle. So much blood is to be shed. On both sides.

1 ½ Hours Later

Gryphons soaring overhead, carrying men to the top of the tower. One including Edmund. Charlotte looks down toward where Edmund was. She saw him reach down and strangle a guard. He looked over the railing, and clicked his torch 3 times, signalling for the other gryphons to come in. From the treeline, Narnians begin walking toward the castle. Being carried in the sky was new for Charlotte. She liked it. That was until they started diving. The hybrid's grip was low enough that Charlotte could aim her bow, but as it flew farther; it's talons started to hurt her, digging into her torso. She refocused, aiming her bow. The girl set her eyes on a guard, in a nearby tower. Charlotte let a single arrow slip from her bow, hitting him square in the arm. The Telmarine let out a cry of pain.

Caspian was on the tower across from her chopping down a guard, with one mighty swing. Edmund flashed again, this time catching the attention of a Telmarine guard. Aiming his crossbow, the man set his sights on Edmund. Charlotte noticing him, aimed and fired taking down the guard. Then the mighty bird, set the girl down on a nearby wall, taking off again. Peter was dropped off right next to her, slicing down the other soldier that was stationed in front of them. Caspian behind him. They all stood on alert, waiting.

"Charlotte. You know what we have to do, we have to save him." Caspian whispered, reading her mind.

"Agreed." She whispered back. They started making their way over to the wall to scale down.

"Wait, where are you going?" Peter asked, confused.

"We have to look for the Professor." Caspian said.

"But the plan." Peter argued.

"The plan could still happen if we go, now." The prince said, turning to leave.

"Let me at least come with you." Peter blurted, in a whisper.

"I'll hold the rope so you two can go down and unlatch the window, and climb in." Charlotte volunteered.

"How will you get in?" Caspian asked.

"Don't worry about me. I'll find a way. Now go." She said, grabbing the rope. Caspian was the first down. He landed on the ledge with ease.

"Professor?" He whispered, tapping on the window. Peter was edging his way down, landing on the landing, beside him. Caspian took his dagger and broke the latch holding the window closed, opening it. Peter looked up towards where Charlotte was. He started fiddling with the rope. She dropped it and he looked confused.

"Trust me." She said, reassuringly. He stepped into the room.

Charlotte turned around, holding herself over the ledge. It was about a 5 story fall. Charlotte looked down nervously.

"Don't look down." She told herself, nervously. Her foot reached down slowly, feeling for a stone below. Charlotte wedged her foot between the bricks. She let out a relieved breath. One foot after another, every brick making her shake worse. Why on earth would she do this? On the next brick her foot slipped. The block came loose and plummeted to the ground below. She cursed to herself.

"You have this, keep going." She told herself again. The window was in sight. She lowered, dangling. Charlotte took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself for what she was about to do. She took her legs and pushed. She swung out and she let go, flying through the window. As soon as she fell on the ground she smiled. Caspian looked up from what he was holding in his hand, to her. She was already standing by this point.

"I have to find him." Caspian said, still panicked.

"You don't have time." Peter said back, still in a hushed tone.

"You need to get the gate open."

"You wouldn't even be here without him." Caspian said, looking to Charlotte for help.

"And neither would I." He said. Peter looked towards the girl as well.

"You and I could deal with Miraz." Susan said from the window, talking directly to her brother.

"I will go with Caspian, make sure the plan goes well." She said, knowing it was the only option. Otherwise all hope for the professor would be lost. She can't lose him, not now. She looked to Caspian.

"And I can still get to to the gate in time." He said, looking at all of their face, and then walking towards the door. Charlotte followed.

"Where do you think he is?" Caspian asked, closing the door behind him, wandering farther down the hall.

"If Miraz found out he helped us, he would probably be in the dungeon waiting for council to decide on punishment." She said, turning a corner sharply.

"Here." She said pointing to a wall. Caspian looked at her, confused, telling himself that the girl standing in front of him was delusional

"It's a shortcut." She said, pulling the torch that was nailed to the wall. The "Stone" scraped moving. If they had looked on the other side of the wall, the bricks were hollow.

They quickly, ran down a staircase that led to the dungeon corridor. Charlotte ran faster than the Prince, grabbing the key, and throwing open the door. It pained her, when she saw him. The Professor was lying on the ground, in shackles, bruised from head to toe. She kneeled down beside him, shaking the man. He woke up with a gasp. Caspian knelt next to Charlotte. He looked at Caspian first.

"Five more minutes?" He said jokingly. Caspian took they key from her and started to unlock his shackles.

"What are you doing here? I didn't help you escape just so you could break back in." He said. The two helped him up.

"You have to get out before Miraz learns you are here." He said, grabbing Caspian's shirt.

"He's going to learn soon enough." Charlotte said. She handed him the key.

"We are giving him your cell." The prince said hastily, finishing her thought. The professor took Caspian by the collar and pushed him against the bar.

"Don't underestimate Miraz, as your father did." He said. Caspian looked confused, and worried.

"What are you talking about?" He asked sternly, getting more upset by the second. The professor looked down towards his feet.

"I'm sorry." Was all the old man said. Caspian's eyes widened. He took the man's hand and threw it off him, turning sharply, and running up the stairs. Charlotte knew exactly what he was doing. She quickly put her hands on the old man.

"Stay safe." She said, looking into her dear caretaker's eyes. With not more than a second glance, she took off after the future king.

"Caspian." She hissed quietly, trailing up the stone stairs. Caspian had been blinded by rage. Charlotte turned the corner, only to see him drawing his sword. The Prince was already in Miraz's room. He lifted it to Miraz's throat. The man, woke up not alarmed at all. He just laughed, maliciously.

"Thank goodness you're safe." He said, humor in his voice.

"Get up." Caspian said flicking his sword upward. Miraz uncovered himself, nudging his wife, and stood up. His wife looked at who it was.

"Caspian?" She asked. She had no idea, Miraz had tried to have him killed.

"Stay where you are." Caspian spoke, with murderous sound in his voice. Charlotte had never seen him so angry.

"What are you doing?" She asked again.

"I should think it's obvious, dear." Miraz spoke sarcastically, eyes set on Caspian. Charlotte looked in horror at the scene about to unfold.

"You know, some families might consider this inappropriate behaviour." He said with the tilt of his head.

"That doesn't seem to have stopped you!" The prince said, pointing at him with a sword.

"But you are not like me, are you?" Miraz hissed. Caspian looked at him, eyes narrowing.

"It's sad. The first time you've shown any backbone... and it's such a waste." While Miraz was taunting Caspian, Prunaprismia reached up to the bed stand behind her and pulled out a crossbow.

"Put the sword down, Caspian." She spoke, trying to have as much authority in her voice as possible. It was hard though, seeing as her voice quivered and shook. As quick as she saw it, Charlotte drew her bow.

"Lower the crossbow." Charlotte said, angrily.

"I don't want to do this." The wife said.

"We don't want you to either." Susan said, with bow drawn as well, bursting open the door. All eyes went to the entrance. The crossbow flicked towards them, then back to Caspian. Miraz put his hand on his hips, annoyed.

"This used to be a private room." He said.

"What are you doing?" Peter said angrily, looking towards the young man holding the sword, to his uncle's throat.

"You're suppose to be in the gate house!"

"No!" Caspian yelled back.

"Tonight for once, I want the truth. Did you kill my father?" Caspian said through gritted teeth, pushing the sword closer to Miraz's throat. Miraz backed up as far as he could. He leaned on the window sill.

"Now we get to it." Miraz said, with a nod.

"You said your brother die" His wife said.

"That was more or less true." Miraz replied

"Caspian, won't make things any better." Charlotte said stepping closer to him.

"We Telmarines would have nothing had we not taken it. Your father knew that as well as anyone." Miraz said.

"How could you?" His wife said lowering her crossbow.

"For the same reason you will pull that trigger. For our son!" He yelled.

"Stop!" his wife yelled, raising the weapon again.

"Stay right there!" Charlotte commanded.

"You need to make a choice, dear. Do you want our child to be king? Or do you want him to be like Caspian here?" Miraz said harshfully, stepping forward.

"Fatherless!" He sternly, yet tauntingly at the same time.

"No!" His wife yelled, pulling the trigger. Her arrow flew directly into Caspian's arm.

"Caspian!" Peter yelled. Caspian fell to the floor. Charlotte, and Susan shot their arrows at Miraz, but missed. He had escaped, at the last moment possible.

Suddenly the bells sounded. Charlotte looked panicked. They know they're here. It's an uphill battle. Charlotte took Caspian's arm.

"Forgive me." She said pulling it out. He let out a scream of anguish. Peter and Charlotte helped Caspian up. They all started running. As they rounded a corner, instead of going the way they were suppose to Peter ran forward.

"Peter!" Susan yelled.

"Our troops are just outside! Come on!" He yelled looking back. Peter ran outside, drawing his sword.

"Now! Ed! Now! Signal the troops!" Up on one of the watchtowers, Edmund was being held against the edge of the railing by a soldier, swords crossed.

"I'm a bit busy, Pete!" Edmund yelled as he headbutted the soldier. Peter kept running. He ran as fast as he could to the wheel, Charlotte, Caspian, and Susan, in toe.

"Peter! It's too late. We have to call it off while we can." Charlotte yelled at him.

"No, I can still do this!" He yelled struggling with the wheel.

"Peter, this is not about you."

As she said this soldiers started pouring out of the castle.

"Help me!" He yelled with a grunt. She looked at him, one last time before running over.

"Exactly who are you doing this for Peter?" Susan asks angrily. The draw bridge started to rise. "Charge!" Was heard from outside the gate. Narnians came running through the gate. A rush of adrenaline, is what made it so intense. All of them drew their weapons.

"For Narnia!" Peter screamed, letting go of the wheel. The battle had begun. Charlotte drew arrows from her back, shooting every soldier that came her way. She grabbed a dagger from one of the soldiers on the ground, and threw it at another. Charlotte kept fighting, having no idea when it will end.

She looked around her, the sound of screams, haunting her thoughts. Charlotte looked in front of her to see a soldier, with sights on her, sword drawn, lunging at her. She took an arrow, aimed and fired. The arrow grazed his head. The soldier didn't seem to notice. Charlotte reached beside her grabbing a sword, running as well.

It all happened so quick. The soldier jumped towards her.

"Archers! Pick a target!" One soldier yelled, from above. Charlotte looked back to see a soldier's sword inches from her. She swung knocking the sword out of his hand, chopping him down. She looked up to see an archer aiming at Peter.

"No." She said, running towards him. Charlotte took the soldier Peter had been fighting with, and flung him away from the kind..

"Peter, watch out!" She yelled over the commotion, stabbing the soldier in the stomach. He wasn't listening. She looked up to see Edmund sliding down the roof. He kicked the soldier, who was about the shoot. He fell over the railing, falling to the earth below. Peter looked at the soldier and up in realization.

"Ed!" He yelled seeing all the archers next to him. Ed's head flicked to the side seeing them. He started running.

It only took them seconds the aim, and fire. Edmund ran into the door, bursting it open. He fell. They kept firing. He, in a bustle, kicked the door shut. The arrows landed into the door, not breaking through. Charlotte and Peter let out a sigh of relief. She looked towards the male standing next the her, but his eyes were elsewhere. The balcony. Miraz stood watching in amusement. Peter gritted his teeth. The High King started to run towards the wretched man. Charlotte started to chase after him, when saw she was needed down here. She kept fighting. The girl hit more and more soldiers as they came her way, but she still watched Peter nervously. The boy ran up the stairs leading towards the balcony, pushing soldiers as he went. When he reached the landing, a soldier swung. He swung back, nailing him in the face with the hilt of his sword. Charlotte did not realize she was holding her breath, until she inhaled deeply.

Charlotte watched as a minotaur lept from the stairs onto the edge of the balcony, beating Peter. He raised his weapon about to strike, when he was shot by an arrow. General Glozelle, and a few men came out following their commander. The minotaur had been shot in the arm. The creature flinched, as Miraz walked closer. The man took, and with one mighty shove, sent the minotaur falling to it's death. Peter was in shock as the body flew right in front of him landing on the stairs, hitting everything single step on the way down. The minotaur landed with a thud.

Peter had been paying too much attention to the body, to realize what was going on around him. Charlotte aimed at the soldier approaching him and shot. Peter looked at him, surprised. It was as if he never even saw him there. He was focusing on so many things at the same. The King finally looked up.

"Get that gate closed." Was all he heard.

Charlotte had managed to fight her way over to the front wall. She thought to herself, as she swung, how lucky she was to still be alive. The girl glanced at the ground quickly, seeing all of the dead bodies around.

"AHHHHHH." She yelled swinging her sword over her head, taking out a soldier. He stood back up again. Suddenly everything went blurry. She had no idea what had happened. A soldier behind her had struck her atop her head. She tumbled. Her head hit the wall on the way down, causing her to let out a scream. A blood curdling scream.

Slumped on the ground, unable to move, as she gave up all hope. She lifted her hand to her head. Wet? Why was her head wet? She wasn't thinking straight. Blood, so much blood.

"Peter! Caspian! Someone help!" She yelled. Or so she thought. It came out more like a whimper. It was hopeless.

*THUD*

A rattling sound filled the castle. Even in Charlotte's drowsy state, she realized what was happening. They were closing the gate. She had to get out. The girl heard hoof prints running past her. One brave minotaur ran under the falling gate.

"Fall Back!" Was yelled. People started fighting their way back, towards the one chance of escape. People that had fought so hard to get up to the castle, had to fight just as hard to go back.

"We need to retreat, now!" Peter yells.

"Go! Get her out of here!" He said looking at Susan. She was just standing there.

"Back to the gate! Go!" The commanding centaur ran lifting her on his back.

"Caspian!" She shouted back at Peter.

"I'll find him! Go! Get out! Retreat!" He said turning back to his soldiers. There was more rattling. The minotaur couldn't hold it much longer. Peter knew he had to hurry. He continued looking, when Caspian came riding out with the professor, and two horses.

"Drawback! Retreat!" Peter yelled, mounting the brown horse.

"We need to find Charlotte!" Caspian yelled, scanning the bodies.

"You go! Get your professor out! I'll find her!" Peter instructed, swinging around as fast as he could scanning everywhere. He looked on the ground near the gate, only to see a girl. She was crawling for the gate.

Was it her? He thought to himself. He face was too scratched up to tell. He rode over as fast as he could. Her familiar white dress torn. He sweeped down, pulling her up. She yelped in pain, but he had no time to worry if she's okay. Suddenly in front of him, an arrow shot the minotaur holding up the gate. He rode as fast as he could, catching up with Caspian and The professor. The minotaur lifted the gate with all his might. His last bit of strength. They passed through, when the brave souls legs gave out, the bridge collapsing on top of him. The gate shut. Narnians lined the fallen gate, screaming and crying. Yelling for help. Peter stopped looking back.

"Run for your life."

"Save yourself!" Were being yelled from the gate. He looked at Susan in worry, and in pain. She just put her head down. He looked back once more. One of them was nodding. The centaur ran away from the gate and started fighting a lost battle. Peter looked back again, in tears. He realized what he had done, how it was all his fault.

"Peter! The bridge!" Was yelled, snapping him out of his thoughts. He looked back again, at his brave warriors, and took off. The bridge was closing. He kicked the horse and it ran, just barely making it on the other side.

"Leave us! Go brothers!" Was yelled from the gate.

"In the name of Aslan!" The last thing they will ever hear from those men. It was all over.

Edmund soared above the castle. Everyone inside. Dead. He couldn't believe how bad it was. Blood splattered the pavement below. It was too gory to fathom. He looked at Peter riding, depressed. His brother only looked back at Charlotte. She was crying. He could tell she wasn't crying because of the pain. It was guilt. Why she was guilty, he'll never know.
