{Oak} chapter 2

I awoke at dawn. The sun shined through the windows of the small cabin as I rubbed my eyes awake. Pulling my hands up over my head I  stretched my back hearing my spine crack. I slept on Just a wooden bed frame so it wasn't the most conformable.

I walked over to my red hiker bag in the corner of the room and took out some clothes that was in need for a wash.

I slipped on a worn out gray sweatshirt, black ripped jeans, and my one and only pair of shoes, which were tan timberline. Taking out my map I layed it across the light wood floor. I was currently on a fourth day of my long trip and today is my last day. My goal was to get to Canada where hopefully I would be...safer. I  grabbed my bag  and slung it over my shoulder.

Taking out a box of matches I go over to the red container of gasoline and pore it all over the cabin making sure every inch of it is coated. I slide a match against the box and silently let it fall softly to the ground making the cabin ignite in flames.

I flip over my hoodie and as I exit the cabin going over to a nearby tree and mark it with my silver knife, making sure if I ever cross here again I'll know not to stay. Turning around I took one last look at enormous flames engulfing what was once a simple cabin. I could feel it was  going to rain later today, which would put out the fire. I turned on my heels, walking in the opposite direction.

I soon stumbleupon a huge oak tree and smile. I haven't seen or climbed an oak tree in years. I ran towards it setting my duffle bag down and started to climb. I had an oak tree at my old pack and I used to climb it with my older brother all the time.

"Riley please be careful," my mom shouts from bottom. " I know," I say my squeaky voice shouts for the hundredth time already. I slowly bring one leg up raising the opposite hand pulling myself up higher.

"Hey Riley let's have a race whoever get to the top first wins," my brother Devin says.

"You're on!"

" Ready...Set...Go!"

One foot opposite arm I keep telling myself the whole way through and eventually I make it to the top. "Aw man it was a tie I really wanted to beat you!" Devin wines.

"Not in a million year," I say back.

"Wanna race to the bottom," he says with a sly grin.

"No...but I'll be down in a second"

He gives me a curt nod and starts his way down. It's so beautiful from up here. I mean I could see the whole pack like where my house was, the crazy old lady Mary's shop was, I even saw my best friend Sandra playing outside. I felt alone up here. The good kind though the kind that you need once in a while to just think to yourself and have "me time."From that day forward I claimed that tree as my special spot.

As I opened my eyes I had realized that I had fallen asleep in the tree. It was sun down right now and I had already wasted much needed time to find a place to sleep. I was not going to sleep in the tree it's too dangerous.

As I climbed down I got a whiff a peculiar scent. Wolves. I harshly unzipped my bag, scrambling for my map.

Shit.

I was in Summit pack territory. Summit pack is the most dangerous pack in the country. I must have been too preoccupied with the tree to notice I had stepped foot on there land. When I was little I would hear horrible stories about what they would do to the people there.

I stuffed the map into my bag quickly, zipping it up and slinging it over my shoulder.

"Crack."

My head snaps to the direction of the noise seeing a pair of yellow eyes looking right at me. I feel almost paralyzed when I see two other yellow eyes appear next to the one on either side. They slowly get closer and closer until three light brown wolves are standing five feet away from me growling. The only thing I can think to do is run and so I do until I feel a teeth grab my arm and fling my head into the oak tree and everything after that was black.
