23. big little sister

Arthur wakes early the next morning and decides to cook his wife breakfast. He hums as he cooks, flipping a pancake as he does. "You got better." A voice says.

Arthur drops the pan. "Shit! Renesmee what the heck!" he hisses.

She smiles. "Surprise. I missed you."

"Great I missed you too, now go. You can't be here." He snaps, whispering loudly.

She scowls. "I can and I want to. You've gotten mean."

Arthur glares. "What do you want."

She glares back crossing her arms. "I want things to go back to normal, you selfish jerk."

He rolls his eyes. "Oh charming, that'll work. Go, I don't want you here. I'm happy."

"You are? Great, you can be happy at home too without some whore in your bed." She smiles.

"That's my wife." He snaps.

Renesmee laughs loudly. "W-wife!?" She sniggers, trying to compose herself. "Oh god, you drunk married someone, didn't you. Oh, Emmett owes me 50 bucks."

Arthur scowls. "You bet... Yknow what, doesn't matter. Out."

"You're so boring." She whines.

Lucy comes out slowly in Arthur's blue button-down shirt from yesterday, the sleeves rolled up. "Who's... This?" she says slowly.

"Hi! I'm Renesmee, his sister." She holds her hand out.

"She's actually just leaving," Arthur says, his expression firm.

Lucy looks between the two. "I feel like I interrupted?"

"Yes."

"No." Arthur snaps glaring at his sister. "Ness has issues with privacy. I apologise."

"Don't apologise for me." Renesmee glares and smiles sweetly at Lucy. "Soooo how did you meet?"

"Ness, seriously." Arthur snaps.

Lucy backs up. "I'm gonna.. Go shower. Let ya'll have your moment." She hurries away and closes the door quickly.

"Oh thank god she's gone," Renesmee says.

Arthur throws the spatula at her and she just ducks. "Go. Away."

"I came to tell you something." She sits on the counter and swings her legs. "Something you reaaaaally want to know."

Arthur rolls his eyes and crosses his arms. "Yeah?"

"Dad's coming."

"I know."

Renesmee groans. "Awh who told you? I wanted to see your face when you heard." she smiles.

He rolls his eyes - again. "Immature. Don't you have a pack of mutts guarding you all the time? Why was this the one time they slipped up?"

She grins. "Running away is SO FUN! I see why you did it."

He laughs once. "Yeah, you get away from the little peeves in life."

She ignores the jab and smiles. "So what are we doing today?"

"Lucy and I are going to hang out." He says, emphasising her name.

Ness smirks. "Oh yay, I can join-"

"No. You're going to go home, Renesmee."

"No!" She snaps, angry now. "You made a promise to me! You promised me you would never willingly leave and you then go and get almost murdered and then leave!" She yells.

He stays silent for a moment; he did promise her. The time she asked him to, he said he'd never leave, if he had the choice. He sighs deeply. "I wasn't happy, Ness... Can you understand that?"

"You didn't even try. You almost died - again, might I add - and you leave! Before any of us can even handle what just happened!" She snaps, glaring.

Arthur rolls his eyes. "But it didn't happen to you, did it? Your skull wasn't smashed in. And it was your mate's brother who helped her cover it up."

"And he was dealt with - it almost tore the pack up."

"Shame it didn't." He mutters.

Renesmee rolls her eyes this time. "Look, you need to suck it up that people care, stop being so opposed to tha-"

"I am not in any way opposed to you guys caring." He glares. "What I am opposed to is my life choices being monitored, controlled and decided for me. This is the first decision I made for myself. Perfect little Nessie got everyone in her corner no matter what, not even when it almost killed them. Nessie got a mom and a dad, she got freedom to love who she wants and do what she wants. And what did I get? Scrutiny. Judgement. Questioning. Are you sure that is wise, Arthur? I think its best you don't do that, humans are fragile. Oh we just care, but we'll show that by taking every aspect that makes you free away!"

Renesmee goes silent, not able to respond. "Well... when you say it like that..." She mutters.

Arthur scoffs and walks off, going to the bedroom. Lucy smiles small. "Sorted?" She asks gently as she puts her ring back on, her bikini covered by a light lace coverup.

He smiles gently. "I made my point, but we are going to be stuck with her for a day or two... I am afraid my dad is coming, too, but I will go meet him so he doesn't come here."

Lucy frowns. "You don't want me to meet your dad?"

"Of course I do," he tucks a stray lock of hair back. "But things aren't exactly great between us right now. We have a lot to discuss, and I don't want you burdened with that. You can meet him and judge him for yourself."

She turns her head and kisses his palm. "Okay... last in the pool owes the other a beer."

He laughs and throws his shirt off as she darts out of the door, both ignoring Renesmee as they run past. Arthur tackles Lucy into the water, her shoving him playfully. "Jerk!"

"I win!" He laughs, pushing his hair back.

Renesmee comes out and sits on a lounder in the shade, her flowy dress showing her pale legs. "So. How did you guys meet?"

"I'm sure Seth told you." Arthur says.

She shrugs. "He told us his version, I wanna know the truth."

Lucy smiles. "We actually hated each other - Seth stole my best friend from the girls holiday we were on. So I guess I stole his friend as revenge."

"Uh, I stole you."

"Who got who drunk?" She smirks, raising an eyebrow.

"I mean, I was already drunk, you got me wasted." He grins.

Lucy rolls her eyes, both splashing each other. Renesmee watches them, unable to deny the connection they have. Is it just Arthur clinging to feelings he wasn't ready to lose with Holly? Is this time away his moment of rebellion? She can't deny that he does look happy. He looks healthy...

"Hey, airhead."

Renesmee breaks from her thoughts and looks over at Arthur whos now on a lounger as far from her as possible. He nods to Lucy, who waits in the doorway.

She smiles at Renesmee. "Can I get you anything?"

"I'm okay, thank you... Actually, a water would be nice." She smiles gently. Lucy disappears inside and Ness looks over at her brother. "So... what does she know?"

"Nothing but my ex is a psychotic bitch." He says as he closes his eyes, relaxing.

Renesmee moves to the lounger beside him. "She can't know..."

"She is my wife, this isn't a joke like you think. There may have been nothing at first but we have something, we are making this work because we want to. This has nothing to do with you, the family, Holly. This is about me and her and for once everything feels... it feels right." He says, looking at her.

Renesmee sighs. "I get that... But look at what has already happened. Do you want her caught up in that?"

"Ness, shut up or I will go to Aro, make him change me and I will kick your ass." He snaps.

Ness scowls. "Now that is not funny."

"I'm not the one he has a problem with, am I?"

Lucy comes out with the drinks, cocktails for her and Arthur and water for Ness. "Babe, its like 10am." Arthur laughs.

She grins. "It's the right time somewhere, who cares."

Renesmee watches them as they sit on the same lounger. "Sooo, Lucy, tell me about you." She sits criss cross on the lounger.

Lucy blushes. "Well, I was running away from one marriage when I fell into another. Oh, I wasn't married, don't panic." She laughs as Ness raises an eyebrow. "I was engaged. Right outta high school - swear, everyone thought I was pregnant. I was just stupid - young. So I made Sadie take a trip with me when we went on spring break, tryna find what I wanted. And low and behold." She motions to Arthur who grins.

"Shit story, take a shot." Arthur smirks.

"You're a shit story, you take a shot." She scowls as she goes to grab the tequila, bringing it out.

"Huh?"

Arthur laughs at Nessie's confused expression. "If you tell a shit story, you take a shot. Rules." He shrugs as Lucy pulls a face at the taste.

"It was a story how you met... I dont get how it's shit?" She asks.

Arthur rolls his eyes. "How does it matter how we met? I got her drunk, she got me drunk. We got married and banged and here we are 3 months later."

"Oh that makes our love sound so charming, take a shot." Lucy pours one.

Ness watches how they interact again; love? They've both referred to a connection of sorts, whether that be love or that Ness assumes they have not been entirely sober in months, she cannot tell. "How are you gonna tell dad?"

"Seth did that for me, no? Suppose I should thank him."

"Rose is so mad. Dad isn't even the one you should be scared of." Ness shakes her head.

Lucy smiles. "Rose? Who is that?"

Renesmee gasps. "You really don't talk about us?! We have a big family." She turns to face Lucy. "There is mawmaw and pop, Esme and Carlisle, and they are the nicest people you will ever meet. Then we have uncle Emmett and aunt Rosalie - she can be intense, but total sweetheart. Aunt Alice is like a little pixie know it all, but she just wants whats best, and uncle Jasper is so socially awkward it hurts."

Lucy giggles. "Wow, you have a big family. What is that like?"

Arthur is about to answer when he sees something in the distance, his eyes widening. "Ness! You.. ugh! Lucy, go inside. Please!" He says as he scrambles up.

Lucy frowns, confused. "Why-" She gasps as two people suddenly appear in front of her. They... they sparkled for christ sake!

Edward glares at his son. "We gotta talk."
