Chapter 17

I crash to the ground as Lisa tries to break my fall. The next thing I know, I'm lying on my back with my sisters screaming all around me. The room continues to spin.

"Lauren? Lauren!"

"Someone get Julia."

"Call a freaking ambulance!"

I try to keep up with everything being said but I don't understand their words anymore. I can hear them but my brain isn't processing them right. Christina rushes into my line of sight, saying a bunch of things that mean nothing to me. It feels like something is sitting on my chest, leaving me paralyzed and suffocated. I hear wheezing and realize that it's me. Panic starts to overtake the feeling of warmth.

Julia pushes Christina out of the way, towards the couch, and starts shouting at me. I look at her confused, only getting words here and there.

"Lauren...take...breathe...stay."

Amy holds my hand, squeezing all of the blood out of it. Her face seems to be the calmest out of all my sisters. This is surprising as she's usually the most panicked. She doesn't say a word. She just sits next to me, trying to stay out of Julia's way as she puts a blood pressure cuff on my arm and keeps two fingers on my throat to monitor my pulse.

I look over to my right to see Kevin bear hugging Dani, who is fighting against his grip with everything she's got. Lisa just stands there staring at me while Kath and Christina cling to each other.

"How much longer?!" Julia screams.

I snap my head back to her, starting to make out the words she's saying.

"Three minutes out!" James says. He's holding his phone to his ear. His face is completely pale. I think I'm going to puke.

"Does anyone know what she took?"

Amy, who is still holding the pill bottles, silently hands them to James. He tips them out on the floor and goes back to screaming into the phone.

"Lauren how many?" Julia asks me. I try to answer her but all that comes out is a laugh which turns into a cough. Julia's face changes from worry to anger for a second.

"Goddammit James! Where the hell is the ambulance?"

"It's at the gate. They're bringing it in now," he says to her.

Ambulance? That doesn't sound good, I think to myself. I try to protest but Julia shuts me up real quick.

"Don't even."

She looks over to Amy.

"Does she have a history of this?"

Amy shakes her head no. "We didn't know," she whispers. Her eyes never leave my face. There's a deep v between her furrowed eyebrows. I try to squeeze her hand, smile even, anything to relay to her that it'll be okay but my body isn't responding to me.

I feel myself starting to pass out. My eyes are growing heavy as waves of fatigue wash over my body. Black spots start to creep into my vision.

"No, stay awake Lauren. Stay with us," Julia orders.

I try my hardest but it's a losing battle. Both her and I know it. The last thing I hear before my vision goes black is someone shout that someone is seizing.

When I open my eyes again I'm in the back of an ambulance. I can feel an IV line in my arm and there's an oxygen mask on my face. An incessant beep of a heart monitor clashes with the siren. Two paramedics are fussing around me and I try to swat them away.

"We've got her back!" one of them shouts.

Back? Where did I go?

"Lauren, are you with us?" the other one asks.

I try to say yes but the mask muffles my voice. When I go to yank it off, the first paramedic grabs my hand.

"Leave it on. My name is Abel. We've got you, okay?"

"ETA?" the other one shouts.

"Six minutes."

The voice belongs to someone I can't see.

"Lauren I need you to try and stay awake. Keep your eyes open."

When Abel tells me to stay awake, it makes me realize just how tired I am. My body feels like it was put through a garbage disposal. All I want to do is sleep.

"Getting another dose of Narcan ready," the other guy says. I try to look over and see what he is doing but Abel blocks my line of sight.

"Don't worry about Carter. Just stay with me. We're almost to the hospital," Abel says.

I hear the heart monitor start to beep weirdly as it gets hard to breathe again.

"Take some deep breaths Lauren," Abel instructs.

I try but the pressure is back on my chest. It builds as I start to struggle against it.

"Get me that other dose!"

That's when I pass out again.

Hey guys, I just wanted to give a heads up that due to everything that's happened in this chapter, the next couple of ones will be written from Amy's perspective. We're almost at the end of the book but don't worry! I'll be starting a sequel soon after. Thank you so much for the support and getting over 100 votes! Definitely never would have thought that anyone would read this story at all, let alone enjoy it so thank you again!
