Resting In Peace

It was some moments before either Casey or Matias said a word.

"Mary?" The two gentlemen looked at each other, both pale and shaken, but still standing, dumbfounded by what the ghosts said.

With a sudden realization, they knew at once what 'Mary' they were talking about. But loudly came footsteps down the steps of the basement that made the men gasp in fear turning round. But it was only Mr.Harvestspell and his wife. With a lighted lantern to bring more light in the room.

"M-Mr.Barrington! M-Mr.O'Daly! I-I heard the noises again! But then I heard a loud boom and saw the door to the west wing was broken in too! A-are you alright! Did-did you see anything?!"

"Y-yes, Mr.Harvestspell. We saw and heard everything.." Matias spoke, not looking at their host, but towards the spot where the specters had pointed. Those large boxes and tarps.

"And if you will help us, I want to move those boxes over there" he pointed. When he did, visible fear, finally, visible fear came into the face of the mistress.

"T-there is nothing there, Bradford! Just old boxes of brickabrack and junk! Let us return to bed!" She began to tug at her husbands arm. But he looked at her with a defiance.

"No Mary! I am tired of this! For twenty years I have had to deal with your arguing and telling me I am mad. I know I am not! And these men have been given to me by The Lord as witnesses! And I want this hellish nightmare to end!" And with this final stand, he wrenched his arm away from her grasp, and made his way over to the boxes to help the gentlemen move them. They didn't notice Mrs.Harvestspell rush out of the basement until after they had cleared the boxes.

Behind the boxes and tarps, there was a small hidden door, about the size of a child could fit through. Matias took the lantern and opened the dusty old door. The three men looked inside and all audibly gasped.

Inside, was a tiny room, about the size of a large cabinet or box. Laying on floor, bound together, were two corpses. Their white, skeletal, bony feet showing to the three men after opening the door. Around the bodies were about three or four yards of heavy metal chains.

The three looked at each other and nodded silently that this was a matter for the police. That they would call for the authorities right in the morning. And that's precisely what they did.

It took a week, but at last the two bodies were laid to rest in the Dorset cemetery, and with the help of the authorities, and with the help of Casey and Matias doing some research, they uncovered the mystery:

The bodies were that of two college friends of Mr.Harvestspell; one Braddock Holland, and Chess Rivers. They had went missing years ago, and it was revealed were less than faithful to their friend and their own wives. It was discovered, from many witnesses who had seen them in public, that they were actually both separate lovers to one Mary Reginald, during which she was engaged to Bradford Harvestspell. One didn't know about the other, and had gone this way until after Miss Reginald married and became Mary Harvestspell, wife of Bradford Harvestspell.

One night, a year after the marriage, while Mr.Harvestspell was away on a trip it seems, the two suitors had put two and two together and confronted her upon her lies. What passed at this interview, no one knows. But officers speculate that instead of trying to mend the broken bonds, Mary had killed her two affairs in the room on the third floor with a conceded weapon. Then, had tied the two bodies in chains, and with all her strength, dragged the two dead men towards the west wing and the basement, whereupon she placed the bodies in the secret room.

The disappearance of Mary Harvestspell was soon to be proof of this deed, for it was said she was reported to have fled to America, two days after she had left that night.

With the case solved, Mr.Harvestspell paid his fares to the ghost hunters, and had moved out of the house all together, on the pretense of moving to Switzerland.

Upon arriving back at the society, and of making the file of their adventure, the chairman sat in his seat impressed, looking at the photo Casey had taken, and of the careful notes and recordings of the haunting taken by Matias.

"Excellent Work, boys! Your task was a complete success! And I jolly think it is right to say you two are in need for a promotion!" He said to the two smiling men, now Full Time Professional Investigators.

And it was a cheery night in the parlor, as the gents of the society drank their brandy by the warm fire of the fireplace, and listened to Casey O'Daly and Matias Barrington tell their own ghost story as the autumnal winds blew round Devonshire Road. While the ever glowing moon in the deep black sky, shined upon The Haunted Gents Society.
