Chapter 2 - Haunting Pasts & Present (2)

I settle into a state of ease that was developed over several years. The slight creaking of the floor boards as I walk slowly down the hall. I hold the cloak close to my chest while my right hand grazes against the faded wallpaper.

Memories from my childhood flash through my mind as I continue to make my way to the end of the hall.

*~*~*~*~*~*

It was bright out. Light seeping through the thick canopy of the trees, making pretty designs on the forest floor. I recall wearing a red jumper and hat. I held onto my mother's hand while we walked to Granny's. I looked up at her, taking in her long black hair - which hung loose that day.

As if she felt me watching, she peered down at me and smiled. I gave her a toothy grin back. I let go of her hand and spin in the pattern of light, laughing as I twirled. She laughed as well before something made her sober up.

Clasping my hand, she began pulling me forward in an urgent manner. As we entered the part of the forest that became dense in foliage, I watched as she tied up her hair and pulled on the hood of her cloak. Picking me up into her arms, she sped off. I thought nothing of it, it seemed normal somehow.

I stared at her. Her gray eyes darting left and right as we went through the forest. I listened to her breathing and heart beat until we got to Granny's house.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I shook my head clear of that memory. Finally reaching the oak wood door, I pushed it open and stood at the threshold. It remained the same after all these years. Like a well preserved fossil, my room reflects the eerie childhood I had once my mother died.

Placing the cloak on the dresser, I pulled open one of the drawers and pulled out a pair of worm out sweat pants and a soft red shirt. I slipped out of my clothes and into the ones I set out. The transition was complete in that simple act.

I went from being a trained killer to the sad six year old. At that point, I felt like my grandmother may come in and sit me on her lap and braid my long black tresses into pigtails. It's like I can almost hear my youthful laughs and meaningless gibberish.

Walking over to the edge of my bed, I pull back the down covers and sit on it. I take a moment to let my eyes roam over ever crevice of my room. It feels impersonal yet homely. A wave of fatigue crashes down on me.

Laying back in the bed, I let my walls down and allow sleep to take me under.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Eyes the color of honey, intrusive and patient. They stare at me, through me and into my past. I can make nothing out but the eyes. I am drowning in them. I look about me, there is nothing but darkness and those eyes.

Suddenly, there is mist filling the space around me, hindering my view of those strange eyes. Once it dissipates, I am in a new environment, but one I recognize well - the forest. The wind is howling around me, sending my hair up in a flurry around my face.

There is a soft sound emanating from the wind. It's almost like a whisper. The wind picks up another notch.

"They're coming" I hear the soft words spoken to me. I turn but see no one. "Hide." Another whoosh of wind and my vision is obscured.

"It's not safe!"

"What the hell is going on?!" My voice sounds distant and mutilated.

"It is not safe here for you child." There is a loud whooshing, followed by a clap of thunder.

I claw at the hair in my face, trying to see. All at once everything ceases and my hair falls back into place as if it were never flying and attacking my face. I turn around and in the distance I see a figure. Wisps of smog surround its frame.

Squinting, I try to make out the features. It was a woman, tall and slender, hair flowing as if there was wind blowing still. She looked at me, raising her arm slowly. Unconsciously, I was prepared for anything she could throw at me. Her hand was out stretched in a beckoning motion.

An unknown force came over me, dragging me forward. I tried to resist, but there was no point. It was as if I was hovering above the ground and pulled forward.

I now remained hoovering before her. She was masked by the smog, but I made out those bright gray eyes. Mama? I was baffled. Her face, which appeared out of the smog, was haunted and full of grief.

"It is not safe. You must leave. Now." Her voice was no louder than a whisper. I felt a shudder travel down my spine.

"What? Why?" I rasped, unable to control my voice. She shakes her head.

"It is best you don't know. Just leave." Her voices strains with the urgency of her words. I opened my mouth to speak but a loud howl cut me off.

Fear took over my mother's face. She closed her eyes, a crease forming between her brows. Below me a hole began to open. The dirt and grass was crumbling into the hole. I looked back up at my mother, her desolate grays looking at me with regret.

"Heed my warning, for the sake of me." With that, she dropped her palm to her side and I began to fall.

A soundless scream escaped from my parted lips. I hit the ground hard. I looked up at the graying sky and my mother. Tears were sliding down her face and rain began to fall. I reached out to her but dirt began to fall on me, filling up the hole. I screamed but dirt kept the sound from escaping. I tried to claw through but to no avail. I slowly feel the chocking sensation come upon me and feel like I'm fading.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I wake gasping for air. Once my heart rate slows down to normal, I inhale a deep breath. Tucking my knees up under my chin, I stay completely still.

What did she mean? Why is it not safe?

As if in response, there was a loud howl coming from the depths of the forest. My chest began to ache as I thought of that night again.

The blood, her face, the wolf. It was all so vivid.

A sudden spike of pain went through me. I hissed at the random pain I began to feel. It was coming from my abdomen.

I lifted the red shirt and winced as the fabric grazed across my sensitized skin. The urge to scratch at my skin profusely came over me and I obliged. My nails provided me some solace, until the burning sensation began. I continued to scratch until my skin turned red and started to peel.

I groaned as relief began to flow through me as my skin peeled. I got off of the bed and walked up to the floor length mirror and looked at my abdomen.

In the spot where my skin peeled was now three claw marks that look as though they were scars. They were ringed by a vine type looking marking.

"What the hell?" I murmured softly.

I walk back to the bed and lay down. I shut my eyes and force my self to fall asleep.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I'm in the forest, there is mist all around me. I get up to dust myself off and find that I am in a bright crimson, corset styled dress. I can hear the sound of a howl coming from the depths of the forest, but it was getting closer.

I bunched up the dress and began running. It was pointless; my feet were moving but I was going no where.

I heard a growl  behind me and turned to face the beast. It was large and black, its piercing honey colored eyes boar into my face. It snarled viciously and took a step forward, I took a step back. With the simple motion, its defensive position faltered - a whimper came from it before it turned and ran into the mist.
