Chapter 52 | Nous Tombons Tous

It was day two of my 3 day deadline. I for the past two days, I've been "ignoring" Athos and the others. When I wasn't on duty or grabbing a meal, I was in my room. Milady didn't fully trust me, she knew I had a soft spot for Athos. I curse myself from being so readable, except for currently when it was completely intentional. Either way, she would see that I'm distancing myself, probably from a guilty conscious. Athos or the others would throw an annoyed or confused look. To her, it would seem an air of distrust was brewing between Me and my Friends.

On the third day, Athos, Aramis and Porthos were out on patrol when Constance knocked on my door.

"Go away, Constance." I say exhausted.

Her chipper voice calls from the other side.

"You promised last week to come with me to the Market!"

"Well I changed my mind."

"You've been in there for days. You need to get out, I'm not leaving till you come out."

I take a few dramatized beats of silence.

Constance sighs and I hear the wood beneath her feet creak as she shifts.

I open the door. My face as indifferent as I can manage.

"Fine."

"Perfect!" She grabs me by my wrist and drags me all the way to the market. I follow her from booth to booth as she ogles the products each offers. I gain interest. I hear them, before I see them. Their heavy steps come past us. They almost completely go by before Aramis stops and smiles. The other two stop a few feet away.

"Daria. You're outside."

"Yeah, so?"

He looks hurt "I didn't mean any ill intent, I just meant I'm happy to see you out and about."

I rock on my heels. No response.

"Leave her, Aramis. She clearly doesn't want us for company." Athos says tiredly.

"I'd care for some more than others." I say underneath my breath.

"What was that?"

I don't answer him.

He takes a step towards me. A few people around us begin to turn their attention to the commotion.

"I asked you a question. Remember who the superior here is."

"Maybe by age, and experience. But as for the superior gunsman or woman. Lest we forget my far better Sword skill."

"What has you so bothered?"

I begin to pull out the deeper cuts.

"You are my problem. Strutting around here with your holier than thou attitude. Frankly, it's tiring. Not to mention your incessant need to lie."

He smiles amused. And ah ha look in his eyes.

"Now I see why you're truly mad."

I step closer.

"Pray tell."

He tilts his head down, cocky.

"Because you found out you weren't the only one keeping my bed warm."

My mouth falls and my hand lands a hard smack! Across his cheek.

More heads turn, murmurs begin around us.

He smiles venomously. I go to smack him again but Porthos tries to step between us.

"That enough." He warns. He and Aramis begin to walk ahead, Athos trailing them but still looking in my direction.

Athos laughs.

"See. You might wear the Symbol of a Musketeer but you're just a Stupid little girl."

I grab my gun, holding it level to him now frozen character. Screams and gasps erupt from the street.

"Brave words for a coward."

"Put the gun down Daria." He holds his hands up. Aramis and Porthos following his motions.

"No, Athos. I think it's time for some truths, since your the tight lipped kind. Like for starters how you killed your wife. Good to know the Musketeers like to employ criminals." I wanted to vomit, saying those words to him.

"Keep your mouth shut!" His anger seemed nearly genuine.

"I thought you didn't care what I had to say, I'm just a stupid little girl. Right?"

His face is full of rage now. He goes to grab his gun but mine goes off first. It hits him in the shoulder, and I hold stop myself from running to him as he goes limp and falls to the ground. Constance screams and runs to him. I wait a moment.

Porthos feels his pulse and looks to me grimly.

"He's dead."

My face falls.

"Murderer!" Screams old man, pointing an accusatory finger at me. More people begin to shout at me, as a mob forms around me. Aramis and Porthos begin to drag Athos's limp body away. I looked to Porthos for any signs of real distress but saw none.

The crowd pushed further into me, some trying to grab me. Others backing away in fear. I pull free and begin running away. The more cowardly, the better. After a few blocks I dipped into an empty alley. Just as I'm catching my breath, a light breeze hits me. Suddenly a Cloaked Milady is beside me.

"It's done." My voice is hollow. Tears are trailing down my face.

"I saw. Well I saw most of it. That mob didn't leave much room for a private viewing." Her voice is a bit shakey. Her face not as void of emotion as she'd like to think.

"This is what you wanted. Why are you upset."

"Don't be ridiculous."

I kept my solem disposition.

"So we are done? You'll leave My brother and friends alone?"

Her cold stoned face nods.

"Of course, but there has been a slight change of plans."

"What?" I take a step towards her.

She just smirks and then pulls the hood to cover her face more. She runs down another alley and before I can go after her, I'm Cornered in by a group of Red Guards. Each of my arms is restrained. Brass cuffs are placed around my wrists.

"Daria La Vielle, you are under for the murder of a Musketeer." One officer says.

In the confusion, I'm unable to fully process the moment. So I say nothing. I simple follow them to the Prison.
