Ch 4

"So... Did you find the specific location of the treasure?" asked Rainsford, with excitement.

"Yes," said General Zaroff, also with excitement, "I prospect on this island in the past few weeks, and I think I found where the treasure is, but I'm not sure."

"Not sure?"

"Yeah, I found a path that contains many traps, but some of them I can't go through by myself. It seems that it needs at least two people working together in order to go through it. "

"Two people together?"

"Yeah, for example, there's a door that needs two people pressing the button at the same time."

"Then now we've got two people, you and me."

"Sure, we can do it together."

"What are we waiting for? Let's go now." Rainsford stood up, trying to take his weapon

"No wait," pulling Rainsford back to his seat, "Calm down; we need to discuss our plan before going. I'm more familiar with the terrain than you, and you also need rest; at least wait until your wound is healed. Now you need some sleep, we'll discuss the rest tomorrow."

Rainsford wanted to refute, but his body was too tired after fighting with Griffon. After hearing the word "sleep," his body automatically switched into a sleeping mood. The last thing Rainsford felt was General Zaroff placing a blanket over him, and he fell into a dream.

Rainsford had a dream about his grandfather. After so many years, this was the first time he had dreamed about the scene before his grandfather's death. "My dear grandson, Rainsford. I hope you can fulfill my dream when I was young. Go, you have to find it for me. No excuses" Again and again, he kept repeating this nightmare. "Rainsford, wake up, it's already lunchtime." General Zaroff's sound appears in his dream.

"Huh...? Lunchtime?" As he looked out of the window, he noticed the sun was directly overhead, it's brilliant rays streaming through the window and into the room. The temperature inside the house was also rising, and he noticed that he was drenched in sweat.

"Are you alright? You kept moaning in your dream, having a nightmare?" said the general offering a glass of water.

"Yeah, I dreamed that my grandfather was threatening me and forcing me to find the treasure." Rainsford sat up, tidying himself.

"Feeling better now?" asked General Zaroff.

"Yeah, better," he sniffed in the air, "What's that? I smell something good."

"I made our lunch, a roasted bird."

"Wow, that sounds good." Rainsford sat down in the seat around the table

General Zaroff placed the food in front of Rainsford, and said, "It not only just sounds delicious, but it also tastes delicious too."

The two men eat their lunch while sharing with each other their hunting and life experiences. After they finished their lunch, they started to discuss their plan.

"It is said that there's a guard in front of the cave, but I'm not sure either," said General Zaroff after cleaning all the bowls they used.

"Guard? Will there be a guard and traps in front of the treasure?"

"I believe so, we will discover that later."

"Sure, then."

"Are you feeling alright? I think it's time for us to set off."

"Of course, I'm always ready."

"Then I'll take the weapons. Can you grab the food? It's on the shelf over there," said General Zaroff, pointing at the shelf behind the wall.

Alone on their way toward the treasure, they helped each other, especially through the traps that needed two people. Without a word, they pressed the button at the same time, as they had met for a long time. Finally, after several challenges, they saw the cave, which contained the treasure.

"Nobody is in front of the cave, are you sure there is actually a guard?" After observing the cave for a long time, Rainsford asked.

"No, I'm not. I told you, I'm not sure either."

"Fine, but it doesn't seem that there's anyone."

"Yeah, but still be aware of any sound."

Slowly, Rainsford and General Zaroff went toward the cave, and they saw nine stone sticks on the door arranged into a nine-square grid.

"What should we do?" General Zaroff asked, also looking around and worrying that there might be something popping up.

"I think it's a password system, we need to figure out the right password."

"Password? How are we supposed to know the right password? There's no clue at all."

"Clue" Rainsford was shocked, and quickly took out the jar and the riddle. It's not the actual location of the treasure, it's the password for the door. Rainsford presses the numbers; it's correct!

"It's not the location, it's the password! I finally figured out the meaning" yelled Rainsford.

"Shhh...." General Zaroff immediately gagged him, saying, "Don't yell, you will lead out the dangers."

"Sorry, I was just..."

A footstep sound appears not after Rainsford finishes his sentence.

"Well done, well done," a young man's voice appeared alone with the footsteps, "haven't seen you for a long time, General Zaroff. I thought you were dead."

"What? Do you know him, Mr. Zaroff?" asked Rainsford.

"No... Wait! You are the one who joined us in the middle of our mission, the one who ruined the whole team."

"Well done, well done. Yes, you were right, I was the one you were talking about. I'm the guardian of the treasure, and my name is Ivan. If you want the treasure, you have to beat me up first, which is a very stupid answer. Turn around, leave the island, at least I won't kill you."

"As for our plan?" said General Zaroff.

"As our plan," said Rainsford.

Both General Zaroff and Rainsford rush toward Ivan.

"Well, I guess you two picked the wrong option."

General Zaroff and Ivan started their fight, but he found out that Rainsford tried to go inside the cave.

"What are you doing, Rainsford?! This is not in our plan," Yelled General Zaroff.

"Sorry, I changed my mind at the last second, all I wanted was the treasure not another bloody fight. Good luck, General Zaroff," Rainsford pressed the password and disappeared at the back of the door.

"Shit," scolded General Zaroff.

"Looks like your partner abandoned you, huh?" said Ivan, as usual, using that annoying tone "Don't think you can escape from me."

"That's just what I want," said General Zaroff "I'm going to kill you, then kill that idiot behind that door."

As General Zaroff and Ivan fought outside the door, Rainsford saw the treasure box, and with great excitement, he opened it.

"Grandfather, I fulfill your dream," he thought in his mind.

Three, two, one. Rainsford opened the treasure chest forcefully. He looked inside the box.

Nothing.

Rainsford couldn't believe it all those days of hard work he couldn't go back home with nothing. He picked up the box, turned it, and tried to use different angles to look inside the box.

Still, nothing.
