Chapter 21

Katniss POV

Today we start training. Peeta will train Ewan, and I will train Macie. Effie thinks its better this way because girls training girls and guys training guys would be much easier. Effie comes in to wake us up. I ingore her a go back to sleep. Peeta wakes me up again ten minutes later by kissing me awake.

"Have I never told you how much I love you?" He asks.

"Yes, you have. Almost everyday. And I love you too." I say.

I kiss him on the lips then hop in the shower. I press a button that sprays strawberry scented shampoo in my hair, followed by conditioner. I press another button, and suddenly I'm covered in sweet scented bubbles. I rinse myself off and go into the bedroom. Cinna has layed out a training suit for me. It's the same kind as the one I had to wear, but Capitol colors. Peeta's matches mine. It's a horrible magenta color. We look ridiculous. I simply braid my hair down my back and go down to the training center with Peeta. We find Macie and Ewan there listening to the lady giving instructions. The usual: don't fight with other tributes, try to focus on survival strategies, not just fighting.

I take Macie over to the archery center. She picks out thin, long, black bow with a silver string. She puts a quiver aroung her shoulders and waits for my instruction. I do the same and stand on an x on the floor. She does the same.

"OK, Macie. First you stand on the 'x'. Then load your bow like this." I show her how."Then you pull the string back to your lips and focus on your target. Once you're ready, just let go."

She takes her stance, loads her bow, aims, and shoots her target. It hits about four inches from the center. "Not bad for your first try."

"Thank you." She says. This is the first time I heard her voice. It's sweet and high-pitched, but cute. It suits her. She takes a couple more shots. Not one arrow finds its target, but it gets pretty close. We move on to the knife-throwing station. She does this with ease. Every knife hits the practice dummy right in the stomack or head. I give this a go, and fail miserably. The knife completely misses the dummy, and almost hits the boy from district 7. He gares at me, and I smile back. I think it was funny, but he clearly doesn't. We move on to knot-tying. Lynch, Finnick's cousin is there, so I try to make conversation.

"Hi Lynch. I'm Katniss."

"Hi Katniss. How do you know who I am?"

"I used to know your cousin Finnick, and I'm friends with his former wife, Annie. Do you know her?" I ask. Maybe he does.

"Um, I think so. Is she that mad girl from district 4?"

"Yes. She is. They have a son, Finn. She married a man named Oliver, but they recently got divorced. So, how are you doing with your training?"

"Pretty good I think. Hey do you know if this is right?" He gives me a piece of rope knotted into some formation. It's the same way Finnick used to knot his ropes during the war. It's the only thing keeping him sane. I used to knot too, then I got Peeta back.

"Yeah. I think so. You know, that's how Finnick used to knot his ropes." I state matter-of-factly.

"Really? I didn't know him very much. Could you tell me about him?"

"Sure. Well, when he was young, he used to go on fishing trips with his father. That's how they earned a living. One day, he saw this girl drowning in the ocean. He jumped ship to rescue her. Do you know who this girl was?" I ask. Lynch shakes his head. "It was Annie Cresta. He pulled her to shore. After that, they became friends. Annie's family knotted ropes into fishing nets for a living, so Annie challenged Finnick. She said she could bet that he couldn't make a whole net all by himself. He took the bet. Then Finnick went into the 65th Hunger Games at age 14. He won, and found Annie afterwards. She tried to comfort him, and they fell in love, but they didn't know it yet. After Annie won her Games, she sat on the beach everyday, staring out into the ocean. Finnick sat by her side everyday, while he worked on his net. They stayed like this for a while, then they went out on their first date. A couple years pass, and its during the recent war. Finnick was a soldier in the troop that rescued my husband, Peeta. Before anything bad happened, Annie and Finnick got married. Peeta decorated their cake, and Annie borrowed one of my Victory tour dresses. It was a beautiful wedding. Finnick was killed by mutts in the Capitol, while Annie was pregnant with Finn. She married Oliver when Finn was about four. They just got divorced, and she is living in distirct 12 next door to me."

"Wow. That was some story. But I'm glad you told me. Whenever I ask my mother about him, she cuts me off. Thank you." He hugs me, I hug him back. He feels like family to me.

I go over back to Macie, and see shes getting bored with knot-tying. We go over to the edible berries station. No one else is here. Good, I have a plan for her in the arena. But I can't tell her just yet. I'll have to tell Ewan too. But first, in order for my plan to succeed, they need to learn how to climb trees. The berries really fascinate Macie. "I never thought there were so many different kinds!" She exclaims. I overhear the Gamemakers talking about the arena layout. Forest scene. Perfect to elaborate my plan. They are going to use the same layout as my Games. I'm not allowed to tell Macie, or anyone else, or else we'll both be killed. What would happen to Peeta and Prim then?

Today is the last day of training. The Gamemakers will test the tributes on their skills, followed by an interview with Caesar Flickerman. We wait for Macie to be called into the room. An hour passes and she is finally called. Only Ewan is left in the holding room. More like prison cell. I can't go in there with her, but I know she will do great. Five minutes later, Ewan is called. After ten more minutes, the tributes go back to their condos to get ready for the interviews. Ewan comes out first, wearing a jet black suit, with a blue tie, and a light blue dress shirt underneath. His hair is combed out into his bangs, how he normally has his hair parted. He looks very handsom. A little while later, Macie comes out. She is wearing a floor-length gown the same color as Ewan's tie. It's kind of like a teal blue. It has a sweetheart neckline, long sleeves, and peacock feathers on the corset. Her hair is up in a braided bun, with a peacock feather clip on the side of it. She looks pretty too. During the interviews, Caesar will announce the tributes training scores. I don't listen to the actuall interview parts, but the scores I do.

Peeta and I congratulate Macie and Ewan on their scores, and head back to the condo. We sit down to dinner after they have changed into something more comfortable. We have lamb stew with dried plums. My favorite. For dessert, since it will be our last dinner before the Games, we have baked Alaska. Its when you set icecream on fire, the blow it out before you eat it. It's my new favorite Capitol dessert. Peeta's cheese buns will always be my favorite. I'm so stuffed that I just go to bed. Peeta wraps his arms around me, and we fall asleep instantly. Tomorrow will be a rough day.
